Sonos Play:1 refuses to work with TP-Link repeater

Hi people,

I'm hoping someone here can help me troubleshoot this issue I'm having.

Just bought a Sonos Play:1 today, and tried to hook it up in my dining room, which is quite a ways away from the lounge where the router sits.

In preparation for this, I bought a TP-Link repeater, which was great to expand the reach of my 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi signals.

However, the Sonos just refuses to work with the repeater, even after I made the extended SSIDs the same as the original SSIDs. I then tried different SSIDs, but still no luck.

Any ideas/suggestions would be very welcome, thanks

Have you tried getting it to connect to the main router? Repeaters add an extra layer of complexity so try see if it will join your network initially - if it does then the issue lies with the repeater (Wifi channels etc)

Yep, works 100% with the main router, just not with the repeater.

Apparently Sonos stuff really doesn't like repeaters!

Repeaters are useless if not connected with a cable to the router. WDS, gawd i hate that kak.

got rid of the repeater and put a secondary router there.

the Sonos is very finicky - even with the new APs named the same as the original ones, it knows that they are not the same. So if my phone is on the 5GHz network, I can't reach the Sonos on the 2GHz network - what a PITA.

eventually got tired of this kak and just wired it to the secondary router, and now I can access it from any device & any AP.

I think depending on how the repeater is setup, it could possibly be a "double NAT" scenario, where the Sonos devices connected to the repeater is in a "different network", hence unable to reach the Sonos devices connected to the main router.

Make sure the repeater is "bridging" from the main network, either wired or wireless (mesh). Wireless bridging is finicky and usually doesn't work well. Always better to do wired bridging from your main router to the extender or AP (wireless router in AP mode).
