Sony Ericsson P990i

No update/news on the new firmware yet.

Out of frustration, I updated my phone with the 'minor' update from 8/2/2007 and noticed one or two things :
1. The download went to 62%, before it started to update my phone, on the previous update it got to 26% and started updating.
2. I've downloaded the latest PC Suite from SE's web site
http://www.sonyericsson.com/downloads/Sony Ericsson PC Suite for Smartphones 1.3.11.exe and it picked up my P990i a bit quicker. Apparently there is an even newer update service available, will check later.

Well, the phone hasn't restarted on me yet, so will see how it goes... ;)

No new firmware yet

I also downloaded new pc suite and backed up before using SEUS. SEUS does in fact have a new look, seems to be faster too. It seems I already had the latest update for my phone when I connected this morning, ie: for CDA162007/2: R4B03, Phone:R9EC001, BT: R5A01, Org: R4B03. So nothing new so far.

That's the firmware I updated to - well, so far it's working well. Let's see how it goes...

Well, it would seem the new firmware update was a rumour.

Maybe next month. :(

hey kingrob... remember when i introduced you to the vista theme ... well i have a new favourite, got tired of vista theme.. its from the same place we got our vista and its called ninja.. its a black and red theme, very cool, but wait till you hear how awesome the sms notification is !!! will be my theme for the next while.
is there any way to save the sms notification to use on other themes?

Heh I have just been catching up on the last week or so's posts and OMW I will never eat a banana again!

As for the N95, as many have said, it probably will be a great phone, but not aimed at the same market as the P990i, so yakking about it here is pointless. I will however point out that taking a photo on my P990i is instant, and quick. The N95 takes 5 seconds!

I noticed kingrob mentioned the iphone again - *BLEGH*, it's pretty, got some great UI features, but, how useful will it really be. One of UIQ3's biggest shortfalls is a lack of 3rd party software, compared to S60 and Windows Mobile - ESPECIALLY S60 though. The iphone is going to have even bigger problems with regards to that, and, SO LITTLE communication technology - in terms of user interface it's ahead of the rest, but otherwise it's behind the rest.

I am not anti nokia, I would like to own a Nokia as a secondary phone, and definatly like the upcoming E90, but the biggest benefit I see is 3rd party software that is out there for S60 phones, which is why even Nokia's flagship is switching to S60 now. I hope that the developing world, in conjunction with Sony Ericsson, get things right next time round on this arena, as well as getting that RAM issue sorted.

I LOVE my phone, if I love it this much now, I'll probably be fighting for legalising marriage to ones cellphone in the next generation or two of the P-series!

Very cool theme, kvi!

However, the Vista theme is still my favourite... ;)

Ah, it would seem the new firmware update wasn't just a rumour after all!!

Can't wait to disable the transitions on my P990i and see it fly!

*The funny thing is that my phone is really stable after I did the 'minor' firmware update. :)

@aqualung - that 'ares' guy on My Symbian is extremely irritating. Whenever someone post a problem with their P990i, he post a reply to rubbish them. Now it looks like he's the most excited about the update? Go figure...

Hi guys

Glad you're all still around...:p

Now that new firmware looks really exciting ! According to olbo from my-symbian the phone is now as fast as P910 was ( both in opening apps and menu scrolling ) and VERY stable. Landscape mode in photos has also been fixed .

I went to the service centre outside Canal Walk on Friday. They were open BUT no longer flash phones on site ! " We have to send the phone to Jhb " how retarded is that ?! SO I'm holding out for the SEUS update ( which I have to do at work BTW, no windows machine at home ! )

and I'm going to send a poisonous email to MTN about the redundancy of the first word in this phrase " Service Centre ". Maybe MTNDD can send it through the right channels...

* thought * there is a vodacom service center in green point. Do you think they flash phones with unbranded software ? Or will their version come with the dreaded meerkat and vodafone menus ?

PS yes kingrob I agree about that esato / my-symbian member. His slavish devotion to the P990i and his complete inability to acknowledge any problems with it are extremely annoying ! As you may have noticed he was called out on it on one of the esato threads...

PPS My new theme is the iphone theme , it's very cool and seems to be one of the themes that runs a bit faster on the P990i...

Hi aqualung!

I don't think it's a good idea to take the phone to a Vodacom service centre - you might just end up with the meerkat on your phone!

It is indeed good news that we can look forward to a phone as stable as the P910i + all the bells & whistles!! Hard to imagine, but I'm a believer... :)

The last annoying thing about the P990i, which I hope they fix in this firmware, is the 'grainy' thumbnails. If SE fix that, I've got the ultimate phone!! ;)

*Still got the Vista theme on my P990i, very happy with it...

@kingrob

Ja I know I'm grasping at straws here...I really, really want the new firmware...;)

Hopefully it will be out on Tuesday...

*sigh*

It will be - but only check late in the afternoon, like one of the forumites on My Symbian said.

I will post here, the moment it becomes available!

*Can you imagine how cool the P990i will be after this firmware upgrade? I'm seriously considering getting that 8GB memory stick duo - my own mp3 mini-jukebox & enough storage space for the camera on 1600 X 1200, 'fine' mode! ;)

Tuesday eh ? I'll hold you to that...

There are eight of us registrars sharing one (!) Windows workstation in the doctor's office...I'll have to kick the guys off the machine in the afternoon...:p

D'you think I'd just hand the phone in and walk away ? The tech would be subjected to a thorough interrogation first...;)

Goodness me! I seriously hope it's not a private hospital being so cheapskate?

Honk honk.

Would you still get the iPhone, even if your P990i is as stable as a P910i?

Mind you, the iPhone will take a few years to reach South Africa...

Nah, welcome to state service ( and that machine, I might add, was sponsored by someone in private practice...)

And yes, I'll look at the iPhone with interest when and if it ever gets to us...

( By then the P990i will be obsolete so I won't feel so bad )

Seriously though, I acknowledge the memory leaks and other issues with this phone but I still really really like it ! Nothing else comes close !

* REALLY want that new firmware....! * :D

The iPhone is only going to be released overseas in June 2007. So it should be here before the end of the year.

I'm really disappointed that there's STILL no 'Mac Suite' for the P990i. One of the main reasons why I haven't bought myself a Mac yet...
