Sony Ericsson P990i

...
Many prefer the vista theme. I personally prefer the VistaAurora version, the iphone theme is also really nice
...

Hi Aqualung, I've look for the Aurora theme on SE-UIQ site but could find it. Did you perhaps refer to the Aero theme?

Here is the link for the Brando P990i Crystal case.

Think it's time to order another one...

The Nokias have some kind of software that transforms videos from your computer to a format that can be played on the phone. Can the P990 also do that? Can it play .avi format movies?

P990 can't play AVI files directly. You get players for that (Divx Player etc.), but they're buggy and I don't like the interface.

Best is to use the internal built-in video player. For that you need to convert your (any format) movie files, DVDs etc. into MP4 format. The best software IMHO is M3. Granted the conversions takes very long, but but the result is beautiful!
You can get it here:

It's freeware. More info on it here:

Hello there V3rT|g0!

Welcome to the thread! Does the nickname 'JayJay' mean anything to you by any chance? :P

Anyhoo, I can comment a bit on dropping the P990i as I am clumsy, and I never use casings. I've dropped it a number of times and it survived a nasty car crash, you can see it's scathed externally but still looks like it handles the beatings a lot better than any other phone I ever had.

An issue however is if you don't use an external casing the metallic brushing on the sides where you hold it will eventually brush off, I can already see lil bit of white plastic on either side of my phone.

That said, love this phone a LOT so I'm sure you will too!

J

PsyLenT (JayJay)! You old covert ops. Wow it's been, like, forever since we last chatted anywhere. *hug*. What a small world.

Anyway, thanks for your input... if you have and like the P990, then I'm definitely getting one too!

That case that kingrob linked to looks very nice and not too expensive either. I'm seriously thinking of ordering one for myself. Should help with that brushing off problem.

I have another question. Is there any way to use the Wifi for free online connection? I tried the places at CT, JHB, and East London airports, but they all said it would cost money to use the P990 in their hotspots.

Gecko, it's called vistaAurora...I definitely got it off SE_UIQ,

Kingrob, I bought the earphones at a vodashop ( R199 )

* edit : you're right Gecko, it's not on SE-UIQ ( must be losing my marbles  )

here it is on mobile9.com

http://gallery.mobile9.com/f/75342/

It's a bit more blue/green than vista. Plus it seems to run faster than some of the other themes ( eg iphone ) ie menus open faster

Ta, aqualung & Gecko,

Will be getting my Walkman earphones shortly.... the sound with the supplied earphones are not the best. The king will pay a visit to Southdowns centre in Irene, the Vodacom & MTN shops are right next to each other. :)

*Guess if I buy the Walkman earphones, the 4GB memory stick duo will be next. Can't wait forever for the 8GB baby - and it will most probably cost the same as a PlayStation 3.

:D I agree.

I paid R700 for my 2Gig November last year at Tafelberg Furnitures. But now I heard they go for half of that. Also you can get some great specials on BidorBuy. I bought my second hand P910 on BidorBuy and it was like new. Memorysticks will be new stock - no risks.

Damn, how I miss Tafelberg Furnishers up here in Gauteng.

I love that shop.

They should pay us for promoting them! :D

Seriously - to the other people of this forum - their prices and their after sales service are better than any other shop I experienced.

vertigo!!!!!!!! YAY IT'S YOU!!!!!!!!

lol what are the odds man! you hav my #, use it damnit! I kno u got free minutes now :P

I was gonna make another point but I'm very trashed, so I forgot, maybe next time lol, byeeeee

Hey PsyLenT. Shame, you should get trashed less often... maybe you'll come up with many more good points that you're missing at the moment! Yep I do still have your #. I'll drop you a message just now.

Back to the wifi question, I heard rumours that Mugg & Bean have free wifi access. Can this be used with the P990i? Does it slaughter the battery life though (killing it in, say, less than an hour?). How do you go about hooking up to a wifi hotspot? Are there any other free ones besides Mugg & Bean?

By the way, thanks for that link Gecko. It is a relatively hefty 30MB download, but it's a great piece of software. Converts pretty much anything you can play on a PC to the correct format for a cellphone. I was very impressed.

Also, I didn't think it was that slow. I guess it depends on what you're doing, but I got about 4 minutes conversion time for every 22minutes of video. Played great on my old K750 and looked very crisp and clear. At that rate it's 15 to 30 minutes for a full length movie and I don't have a problem with that since I'm certainly not going to be doing hundreds of full length movies.

@V3rT|g0 I'm not a huge fundy when it comes to technical things but i was in St. Augustine's hospital and they have a WIFI hot spot, I searched for it and logged on the net no problem. First time I tried it and it worked 100%. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Cool. thanks Bruce000. Now I just need an excuse to end up in hospital!
*looks around room for sharp objects*

Kidding. But yeah, perhaps they even have those kinds of hotspots in other public service areas too, maybe doctors' waiting rooms etc. It's a great concept, will make queues far less tedious in future! Pity about the airports costing money though, I spend a lot of time waiting at those...

Think Mugg&Bean will give you first ten minutes free, then you'll have to pay.

Well, that is the M&B at Centurion Mall.

Only 10 minutes? That's a bit stingy. Maybe they'll be more generous here in East London (if they even offer it).

Really seems like you guys pay more for just about everything there in Gauteng. A short while ago I ordered a small jug of tap water for our table at a restaurant in JHB and was charged R10,50. Sheesh.

Gauteng is not for sissies.
