Sony Ericsson P990i

@ all above. Thanks for the links and heads up. I have it installed all will try it out.

After using it for a while I've decided it may not be the best programme ever. I seems to take up a lot of memory - for example, I can't run Opera Mobile and the RSS Feeds at the same time with this programme on, the other one seems to close. But it is fairly cool and the keyboard shortcuts are great. If only SE wold integrate functionality like this right into their future phones (although the P1 is getting there).

im also stopping using the gdesk... nice idea but not quite there yet...
do you guys run the shortcuts that the P990 offers standard? i find it far more flexible. like i can set shortcuts to an sms to my wife etc. cant do that with gdesk. also cant shortcut to like inbox so its quite a thing to go messaging then inbox then the new sms

Same here, it just takes up too much memory.

Well, it is still in beta format, hopefully it will get more 'polished' in future updates.

New version released this morning. Memory footprint 400kb less. Plus numerous other fixes.

( Sorry - no shortcut to 'new SMS' yet, I'm sure it's coming though )

slightyly OT.... but this IS the best thread to find the true die hard SE fans :)

still loving my 990... but one of my contracts is up for renewel now, thought maybe to surprise my wife with a new fone, she love SE too. at present she has that black walkman phone.... lol dont remember which one. she doesnt need a p1 or a smartphone and she has an ipod so doesnt need a walkman phone.... im thinking the k810 coz its got 3 megapixel cam and i flash AND it has video calling so i can video call her from my 990 too..... yeah kinky yeah

or should i wait a month and there is something really cool coming? but then again there is ALWAYS something cool coming and if that is the case i should always be waiting :) thoughts?

You're quite right, you'd have to be willing to wait till December for the next batch of cool phones from SE. The K850 has a 5 mpx camera and HSDPA, the W910 is a supercool Walkman phone, and the best Walkman yet, the W960 UIQ3 with 8gb flash drive and everything you could think of (except HSDPA). From your description the K850 sounds ideal but only if you're willing to wait that long, otherwise the K810 is quite a good choice.

The K8XX range is very good. My SO has the K750 and will be looking at either the K8XX or W9XX when she is due for upgrade. P990 only got better as the more stable firmware versions were released. The P990i was a mass market beta test for SE IMHO.

Wow, I've been out of the country for a month and so much happened!

I installed GDesk and what a cool app! A bit heavy for the P990, but extremely powerful (for a free app). It's also a bit unstable sometimes, but I must still try the latest version. This definitely paths the way for great features and plugins to come.

Together with a new app I found called LongCuts, you can fully customize your phone. Longcuts lets one assign any key press to any function/application. I just installed it, but must still try it out. It must be signed though.

Have a look.

@ Auqalung, have you tried the Apple sync app yet. I posted it about a month or so back. Ps. I loved your response on the My-Symbian forum when you heard about GDesk!

Good to be back. I missed this forum of die-hard P990 fans.

Cheers

Ps. @ PsyLenT - welcome back! I'm glad to hear you were able to get a W950.

BTW, I used TomTom on my P990 to navigate around Texas, and it worked like a dream! I got to my destinations with no hassle. It outperformed the Garmin unit I got with the rental car.

I also successfully used Fring to call my wife via Skype in Wifi Hot Spots. The sound and connection quality was better than that of the office land lines.

A lot of Americans who never seen or heard of the P990 were VERY impressed with the phone and says it's an altogether better (well rounded off) package than the equivalent HTCs (Windows Mobile based).

I felt very proud of my P990 :D

@Gecko

welcome back and glad your P990i served you so well !

Yes, Longcuts and Gdesk are certainly enriching the rather sterile UIQ 3 user interface.

version 0.4 of Longcuts is out (see link above ), it has now been tweaked so one can map apps to a single button without interfering with hand-writing or typing speed (caveat - it will cause the phone app to briefly appear when invoking, however using it from within the Gdesk environment cancels that).

And GDesk itself has seen a slurry of new versions the last few days

Welcome back to to SA. Good to hear your P990 did the mapping thing. I am still enjoying that feature. Only issue is having to shut down all apps before running it. Can irritate at times.

It sounds like the next P-series phone will be a groundbreaking phone, not just a mere upgrade - apparently the name wil be P3i.

This is from www.my-symbian.com forum :
next few days real spypics of the P3i will surface...
i know now it will be based on UIQ4/Symbian 9.5

SE just ordered tones of this MSM7500 chips to use on their 2008 phones...check the specs, here are just some:

528 MHz ARM11 Jazelle™ Java® hardware acceleration dual-core cpu
Record at 30 fps VGA
position-location assisted-GPS (A-GPS) solution

Sounds great, I just hate the long wait. Then again by the time it does come out it will probably be time to upgrade my P990 anyway, so just as well.

Same here, I've got one more year to go with my P990i. :)

The P3i should be out by then - don't think SE would like to have a repeat of the P990i debacle.

I am not holding my breath. We waited way over a year for the P990 to hit the stores and the initial firmware was a disaster (so UIQ4 might be the UIQ3 disaster all over). While GDesk and the latest firmware have breathed some life back into my P990i SE will have to pull out all the stops if they want to win my custom when I am due for upgrade (in a year and a bit).

That's also a point of concern for me, why would they move to UIQ4 so quickly, if they (by they I mean us) had so much trouble with UIQ 3, it's only just become a fairly stable platform, why change so quickly? It makes me seriously doubt the rumours of the P3's specs. I won't mind too much though (assuming they thoroughly test it out) just as long as it doesn't have the truly awful Windows Mobile.:)
