Sony Ericsson P990i

I upgraded my firmware on Friday and installed SM 1.6 as well and it is working (the first time I tried to install it i think I may have hit cancel on the second screen with the SM options). Latest Fring installed without hassles as well. I do however have my issues with the messenger interface of Fring. It keeps bouncing 2 lines up after each post so I keep having to scroll down each time. Typing in one window and then automatically being flipped to the next tab when a message comes in is a bit annoying especially if you are in mid word with predictive text on. I then have to delete the word to make the PT bar disappear so I can tab back to my other screen.

Hey PPL!!!!!

So sitting next to me is the absolutely BEAUTIFUL W950i, thanks to fonefreak - it was a pleasure doing business with him!

The 2 things I love most about this phone, is that it is really really AWESOME to just look at, kind of hypnotising! The other thing is it really is a kick ass music player - I really love how they did the music player on the phone.

That said - comparing it to a P990i experience becomes complicated. Obviously I'm comparing my personal use patterns - and what I miss from the P990i is a navigation pad with the flip on. That has been the biggest adjustment for me - but truth be told, once you get used to that, you really appreciate the phone's design. It's not the most practical but it really gives you a bit of a rush once you get used to it - kind of like the rush you'd get once you master using a P990i without a flip.

My java-irc client (jmirc) crashed with the same 'TAGMA 8' error msg that it used to crash with on the P990i so this is clearly a UIQ3 problem - one that I guess will never be resolved thanks to SE's lack of commitment to perfecting our fantastic phones.

Messaging on the W950i can be a bit of a mission, the embedded keys take a lot of getting used to and you need to use the jog dial to select words off a list every so often.

The jog dial is really cool though - it feels firmer and more robust than the one on the P990i. The W950i lacks a 'slider-key-lock' key on the side, instead, the 'back button' on the side is pushed in long in order to lock the keypad.

The other major 'lacking' aspect is quick office, but I didn't really use it much. Oh yeah and a camera - but I can't really be bothered about that. The fact that there is no longer a camera button on the side ROCKS because I was always pushing that unintentionally.

So yeah - that's my lil pointless review upon my return to this forum - one day when I have cash I shall add a P990i to my harem again - but I won't let go of this beauty.

PS: I forgot to add - I think the UIQ3 interface on the W950i is more functional than the P990i ;)

Yeah kingrob - so is the P1 - I can't afford either lol - and with Sony Ericsson, around the corner could mean another 2 years!

The weird thing is that the P1i only has 64MB RAM more than the P990i, but costs more than double. Does it make any sense?

*The W950 is a very cool phone. ;)

The pricks at SE are just cashing in, instead of paying for their mistakes. Honestly, the smartphone division of SE is a joke when you think about it. It's like they put the trainees in that department or something.

It would seem that they are more on holiday than actually in the office.

Yup. I went from a P910 to a P990, and I was really angry that they changed the jog wheel from 5 dimensions to 3. All the pain with the buggy UIQ3 and memory issues is just unacceptable. As one person put it on a SE forum somewhere: He would have been happy with a P910 with WiFi and 3G. Yet SE took all the cool things away and dumped a broken OS onto it.

I do however love the qwerty keyboard and predictive text, unfortunately its not going to stop me from looking elsewhere for my next upgrade.

The P910i is most probably the best smartphone to ever come out of the SE stable - my sister still thank me daily for entrusting her with my P910i, when I got my P990i.

I'm not sure if it's the complexity of the Symbian 9.3 OS that's baffling the SE developers, or laziness (or all the holidays) that's preventing them from giving us a solid OS on the P990i. My phone is pretty OK with the latest firmware, but I dare not open too many apps at the same time, or keep them in RAM! (I think we all still dread that message 'restarting phone to improve performance' when we use our phones!)

Something that makes me really sad, is that we will most probably never see Symbian OS 9.5 on the P990i. Why? Because SE will make it a major marketing & selling point when they release the P2i, or whatever, in the future. The sad thing is that Symbian OS 9.5 has much better memory management than OS 9.3 and I believe it can even defragment the system RAM - just what we need for our beloved P990i.

Aqualung, like the rest of us, has become passionate about the amount of free RAM on her P990i, which was NEVER an issue or thought with the P910i (I didn't even know how much system RAM my P910i had) - why can't it be the same with the P990i?

Just my thoughts...

ditto

I did read some interesting comments about the flash RAM used in the P990. Apparently it is cheaper and slower than what they used in the P910!

The Most Useful App Ever!

Aqualung posted this link at Esato. Try this out: http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=7783C7FC28DD32EEFDXX1862E66B3D1A&platformId=4&N=7&productId=212824&merch=more_author_titles&HDGO_ad=mat_212824&HDGO_au=1&HDGO_ae=c
I've just started using it and I'm no longer jealous of the P1's shortcuts. It's called Gdesk and it finally allows us complete customisability of UIQ3. It's really brilliant and its free for the moment (but good enough even I would pay for it if they charged).

For those who haven't felt the minor earth tremor in the UIQ community these last 2 days, go to

http://my-symbian.com/main/index.php

and follow the link to GDesk.

it's free, it's pretty solid, it gives you unlimited options to fill both FC and FO mode with icons, it's awesome !

The relevant thread in the UIQ section has 13 pages of handy tips and feedback on this amazing app.

:)

edit - oronte, I see you beat me to it, by one minute :p

The handango page has links to some other (free) apps from the creator of Gdesk, including......

a free clock app for standby mode

and a truly superb image viewer called Gview (thumbnails, autozoom, the works)

wow ! :)

Have I been asleep? All these great apps and didn't know anything about it!

Just downloaded GDesk and GView, busy installing it now... ;)
