Looks as if I'm going have to take the same stance. Oh well you and I can cry on each others shoulders. Maybe monday who knows? You and I can have a good bitching session this weekend. See what happens.

Did anyone ever try phoning Nashua Mobile Midrand like I suggested a few posts back? Just wondering..maybe they are out too...but they did have stock when I posted. Maybe upgrades gets preference over new contracts?

Thanks G6, But I am due for an upgrade since Aug 2005 and have been waiting for over a year to get the P990 on this upgrade. SO I cant go to Nashua unless I take a new contract.

Hopefully by Monday, I will have one from MTN in my hand. ;)

Nah new contracts always get first, and they cheaper than an upgrade!

Just to answer your question, I have been dealing with my Nashua Mobile Corp Sales Consultant for over 3 months on this... She wasn't aware that they had stock. So she checked and yes, as to be suspected I suppose, they have run out of stock... However, they do have more coming in on Monday... But those have been allocated to the back order list...

I too have been waiting for over a year and I am extremely jealous of all of you who have one!

I look forward to finally recieiving mine after this long and anguishing wait.

I will post when/if I hear anything different.

Nixxon,

Those upgrades people get commission on every deal they do. I have spoken to at least 6 different upgrades people. Just phone a few times..ask who is speaking and make sure youare speaking to a different person. Tell them that another consultant has you too far down the back order list..and whoever gets you the phone first, get's the deal. One of them will bump you up the list. Mine did :-)
Plead very nicely..tell them you have been waiting for ages and will go to another service provider if they get it for you first. Those back order lists are personal lists they keep themselves..nothing formal. You CAN squeeze one out of them if you try. Also make sure you phone early Monday..and every hour until the stock arrives. If they are there..they WILL NOT refuse you one, to phone back orders that might or might not take it.
Phew...i should give lessons :-)

Thanks for the info. What happens if you are due for an upgrade but not near you contract end date? Will these threats work in this instance? The problem is that i come from a small town and all the people in the shop know me by now because i bug them all the time. Is there someone else I can phone?
Thanks

Try calling the Retentions Department from your Service Provider and using those threats on them...not sure if those consultants are the consultants that G26 was referring to...whether they get commission or not?

With MNP effective from today, if you due for an upgrade, then those threats should work...just tell them that you'll port to another SP that has stock.

If you due for an upgrade, then your contract period should be almost over...as far as i know, if you didn't cancel your contract after the initial 24 month contract period is over, it automatically gets renewed onto a month-to-month basis.

Nice concept, but agents dont respond well to threats ;)

yes they do :-)
Their job is to make sure you don't go to another network. They have a retention budget that are allowed to use. That is discount budget that can use at their own discression. That is why you can ask for a better deal, and they can make the call.
With the migration, you have the power, and they will do their best to comply.
Afaik...if you are due for an upgrade, then your contract has to be almost up.

Btw..I am pretty sure what you are going to see soon is other networks offering to pay the balance of your contract if you shift to them. Depending on how much contract is left..they might throw in a phone or a discount or whatever. Just my guess..but I am pretty sure we will see it soon.

Back to the phone itself..
Still love it, but here are the bad points i have picked up so far:
1) Screen is hopelessly invisible in sunlight. Worse than any of my past phones ever. Can live with it, but it is useless in a bright day
2) Menus are SLOW. There is that tip to speed them up with a video in the background, but don't like things running in the background, so won't use it. Compared to P900, Nokia 7650 etc etc..it is slow. Can live with it too.
3) Battery life is bad. With decent use, I charge it at night and by that night it is on low. Came half charged so Mtn might have done a half charge to install their apps..but shouldn't have a memory. What battery life are others getting? I just charge every night.
4) It REALLY does like to stck up apps in the background. I wish there was an easy kill button, besides having to install Swiss Manager. You can close the apps..but have to go into task manager every time. Bit of a hassle. Just needs an "X" box to shut down apps. None of the apps have a close button, you just multitask them..and they pile up fast.

Just so not all is not bad..I haven't had the rebooting issues or many other problems. I keep all the background apps shut down, and all seems to go ok. Rumour is there is a major f/w update comming in week 48.
Overall still a great phone. Pics are very good and so is the radio and other features. I still don't regard any of the current phones as comming close. Only the Nokia N95 seems to be a possible competitor..and i doubt we will see that for the next 6 months no matter what they say about a release date.

Excuse me - the N95 is a far superior phone to the P990. Just looking at the hardware...

The N95 has the same CPU as the N93, 330mhz ARM CPU + GPS chip. Battery 950mAH LiPO.

The Sony Ericsson P990i has the same 950mAH battery and slower 208mHz Philips Nexperia CPU.
(You mentioned that the menus are slow, I suspect the CPU is the main culprit. Like installing Windows Vista on an old PC.)

N95 - 5MP camera
P990 - 2MP camera

If I buy a phone and must use it for two years, at least I want something that's got newer specs than current phones...

My battery is on about 60% at the end of the day.

I have set the screen brightness at 60% ( more than enough for indoors, as you stated outdoors viewing is virtually impossible ), and , as on my P910, I have switched off the GPRS default connection ( the phone automatically switches it on for browsing, and kills it again on logging off. ) This last step seemed to get me an extra day of battery time on my P910.

I do not at this stage have a 3G SIM card. Apparently searching for 3G signal drains battery faster ...

Agree there is a noticeable ( well a second or two ! ) delay before opening some apps. I personally would be happy with less eye candy and a faster, more stripped down interface.

Hopefully new firmware will allow us to disable the transition effects. :o

Kingrob, dunno about the CPU being the culprit..is that explained by the fact that video acceleration speeds up the menus ?

Okay well my experience with my phone has been great so far, only once have I had a sudden reboot for 'performance' reasons. Took me a long time to get the hang of the phone but I am now, I had studied the phone intensly online over the last couple of months, and had to forget all of that when Vodafone changed the bloody thing.

The phone is far more stable than I expected, but I do feel they should have included more RAM. Also, I tend to find that SW seems to crash frequently, or just disappear mysteriously, all the time. I've also read in many posts about being unable to exit programs - I've found that SOME programs I'm able to select 'system exit' which kills the program - don't know if this is a vodafone-firmware feature.

Otherwise - great phone - MAJOR learning curve - but SO COOL to use!
