Does anyone know of any good sites to get APPs for this phone yet?

See above - go to cellphonesoft.com - get SwissManager ( freeware ) - install.

Dunno what sort of apps you looking for ? Games ? Other ? Try My_Symbian.com, or Esato. Or google it ( personally the phone comes bundled with enough to keep me happy for a while ...)
 
Available free so far:
Swissmanager (basic version..not pro)
Sudoku
Operette (Opera lite)
Lemmings (game)
Oh no more lemmings (sequel)
Another ball (arkanoid clone)
S-tris (tetris clone)

Don't bother looking for "alternative" sources of software...UIQ3 apps are not out there (yet) Only handy Day, Handy Safe and possibly Profimail exist right now..and am sure you guys aren't going after these "alternate" releases :-)

Took me 2 frustrating weeks to figure out why..since they don't seem to know, and I had to figure it out and tell them. *sigh*

Basically the situation is this: Mtn uses an enhanced content management system called Volantis.
Volantis controls all the content provided by the network, and when you enter the wap page, it recognises what phone you have..checks it against the compatability list, and only shows you content that your phone can support.

Yes..you guessed it..Volantis database does not have the P990 in it..so it thinks you can't view the content.

So they have opened a support ticket with Volantis overseas, and maybe..just maybe...I will be able to use my phone for the streaming that I bought it for oneday. Don't know how long these things take, but judging by the number of depts it has to go through..I am guessing it won't be too soon :-(

MTNDataDude..see if you can find out anything about the Volantis DB update, and if there is any progress?

But as far as I know with DVB-H phones they have a TV receiver built into them and that's how they are able to receive DVB-H to be honest I haven't heard anything in regards to Volantis DB but will check and keep you guys posted

Thanks for the advice. Wouldn't know where to start installing software on it. But if i have any questions I'll be sure to ask. Not as cell phone literate as you guys. Must i load swiss manager on before i even load my contacts?

Hi,

The streaming you referring would be an IP-based stream and the P990 should support this (once Volantis has an entry for it). This would work in the same way that many of the higher-end devices support video streaming.

However, this streaming is not the same DVB-H and normal handset's cannot be upgraded for DVB-H.

Hi Guys i know I'm jumping ahead of my self as i am only getting my phone next week. My question is as follows. Do i download Swiss manager from my PC. Or do i access the website from my phone and download it from there. Sorry guys as i stated before I'm not as Cellphone literate as u guys.

I would assume if you have a LAN at work then download it from your pc as it will be quicker

You can do either.

The file itself is a .sis file ( the symbian equivalent of .exe ! ).
If you go to the link I suggested and download , it will appear as .sis on your computer.
If your PC or laptop has bluetooth ( or IR ! ) you can just beam it across to your phone. It will then appear in your message inbox. When you click on it there, the phone will install it. Easy.

( You can put your contacts on the phone first :) ) Despite what my posts may suggest the P990 is not completely crippled without SwM ! ;)

Anothe option - when you get the phone, install the PC suite on your PC. Then when you connect your phone to the USB port on your PC, the PC suite file manager will allow you to drag any file across from PC to phone and vv .Instant installation !

Well, I've got one on order, but I'm not so sure if I want it anymore...

Still reading too much conflicting opinions on www.gsmarena.com & www.allaboutsymbian.com about this phone - unfortunately the alarm bells are ringing. Don't like the fact that the battery life is so poor - I use bluetooth a lot (karkit) and don't want to have to charge it constantly.

Also thought of going the Windows Mobile route, but it would seem it's not very good either. My friend bought an iPaq 6915 and now wants to drive over it with his car.

The Nokia N95 surely looks the most 'future-proof' phone to buy next (I think Nokia's delivery time is much quicker than SE, not just a 'paper launch'), but I got very fond of SonyEriccson in the last three years.

I give up. Think I'll just stick with my SE P910i for the moment & wait for the announcement of the P970 or P1000.... :(

Hmmm...pity.

Have you tried Esato ( the symbian thread ). Some very sensible, rational people ( apart from YT :p ) post there and I find the info there very useful .

( I personally find the breathless, often misspelt postings on the gsm review site a tad offputting and inaccurate...just spewing words out onto the keyboard. The posters at Esato by and large gave me a good 'feel' for the phone long before I had it :) . There's also the my-symbian uiq 3.0 forum ..)

We all know this phone has software/RAM issues. I personally have encountered very few of them so far. The software I discussed above goes a long way to helping this.

Michael Jerz's review at my-symbian is one of the most informative and fairest.

I have pretty high standards when it comes to my gadgets, and I'm happy with this phone. It's a worthy successor to my P910. :)

(It's a pity our SP's are so unforgiving when it comes to trying out phones - I believe overseas one can use a new phone for up to 2 weeks and still return it if unhappy ?! )

*I still remember the day I stood with a P800 in my hand and watched the SE video play - I was simply blown away. :)
