Sony Ericsson P990i

SMS splitting...

Hi everybody, my turn for a question:

I find these days that when I type a normal SMS, my SMS count goes up to 2 after only entering 80 characters. So when for example I type a SMS of say 120 characters, it warns me my SMS is too long and it will be sent as 2 SMSse.. This after I've done no extra formatting on the message text (bold, italics, etc).

Have anyone seen this with their P990? I find that this particularly happens when I copy and paste text from a previous SMS into a new one.

Is there something I must look for in my SMS setup, or could this be a bug in the current firmware?

For interest sake, I see under the SMS account setup, there is an option to set the character set to either "Bit 7" or "UCS2". I've RTFMed, but couldn't find anything helpful on the matter. Does anyone know what these character sets are?

@ErnstF -

Select Control panel-->Connections-->Internet Accounts-->click the arrow at top of Internet Account screen-->Options-->Preferred Mode-->Select CS only.

The blue GPRS triangle above your signal strength indicator will blank out.
If you browse the web or receive an mms, the phone activates it automatically for the duration of the connection and switches it off again afterwards .

Hi aqualung

I've tried this, and it works just as you said. Do you perhaps know what this CS and PS only modes means?

Hey, Merry Christmas everyone!!! I know this is not the best time but i have a question for MTNDD. I have been having major probs with my P990 and my mtn store has been so useless that i know am starting to detest the fone! (I am still se all the way, but hav had bad experiences!!!) anyway, i want to know if there is a way i can get the fone swapped out for a nokia n73 or swomething( Shock, never thought i would say these words!) anyway, i know this is the wrong forum to ask this question but i dont know were else to find MTNDD and need desperate help!!! the contract (procall 120 was signed last week monday. Please help!!! I still love the p990 but dont know if i can handle another one!! :o

I think I do understand where Formfactor is coming from - I'm also slowly getting irritated by the fact that I must switch the phone off after two days' use, due to memory leaking, have to run Swiss Manager constantly in the background, s l o w menus, when trying to add a new contact, it has crashed twice, etc. - it's just not the kind of thing you expect from a phone that costs R6000 (I see it's now going for £389.95 incl VAT on Expansys!) & touted as Sony's flagship phone.

REALLY hope the firmware rumoured to be released on the fifth week of 2007 will fix most of the issues...let's face it, the current software is still in beta format, wouldn't even call it RC1. You can just see by the huge amount of views & replies on the Esato P990i firmware thread, that a lot of people feel the same way I do....

Also, I wouldn't classify myself as a 'heavy' user of my P990i, but if business people need their phone to do conference calling round the clock, etc. and the phone displays a message 'not enough memory', the phone will be out of the window in two minutes. I think Sony should have rather kept the phone off the market and fix the OS first, before deciding to use business people as beta testers for their new OS.

I've got a wild suspicion we'll always have a slow bootup with the P990i - it's not a software problem, but a hardware limitation (you might have read the info on the type of internal RAM being used in the P990i). I switched on my P910i yesterday and couldn't believe how lightning fast it is compared to my P990i. Wonder if I can swap the internal RAM of my P910i with my P990i's RAM?

However, I still think this is a GREAT piece of kit and with updated software, it might just live up to the hype... :)

Sorry to hear you've had such hassles. Belated Christmas greetings to you all. And hope you all have an awesome new year.
Cheers

Sorry to hear about the phone problems, sounds you like you have a bit of a 'lemon' there FormFactor. :(

* I got this phone, knowing there were firmware issues with it. So far I can live with them , Swiss Manager helps a lot, admittedly annoying having to reboot due to the ongoing memory leaks , but I'm holding out for a F/W update !

I believe the P800 went through very similar growing pains, ditto the P900.
Both ended up as ultimately very usable devices.

Be interesting to know what phones the head honchos at SE use.....

I would prefer to buy a phone that has already gone through its 'growing pains', but I guess I'm also hoping that the firmware promised early in 2007, will be a miracle cure for the P990i's woes.

Let's not go there.... :)

I think there might be some truth in it.

If there is one thing that I really admire about Sony, is that they'll fix what they've faaked up, even if it costs them a sh1tload of money.

You've read the reply that I've posted about the memory being worse than that used in the P800, P900 & P910 - and it's true. You can see it for yourself when you boot the phone up! If you take a P910 and P990, see the time difference when you switch the phones on till you can actually use it.

Also, even if Sony produce some miracle firmware, it won't solve the problem - there is just not enough RAM in that phone for the new OS & because it's older RAM, there's not much that software can do to fix it. I said that it's a hardware limitation (old RAM) & even if you can produce miracles with software - there's only so much that you can do....

My biggest worry now is - if they recall all the phones, how long must we wait for Sony to fix it, or do we get a 'credit note' for the P1000?

Time to dust off my trusty old P910i? :)

*Oh, aqualung, besides the fact that you're already a surgeon, you would also be good as an investigative reporter. ;)

P990 VLive branding

When having your SE P990 re branded at a Vodashop please ensure they do it with the following:

The P990 script that you need to ask for is MR1_VCOM_ZA_CCTR1A21_CDA162008/62_R4A01

My current version is CDA 162007/2 R3B01 and will not let you get onto VLive mobile TV
Going to have it done tomorrow, will give feedback after

What a mission it has been with what should be a fantastic phone

Just emailed a contact at Vodacom re this report, if i hear anything will let you know

I think you'll be wasting your time.... if Sony really decide to recall the P990i, Vodacom won't be on their 'priority' list. Mind you, maybe they will be, with the Vodafone connection. Vodafone is the biggest mobile service provider in the world.
