Spammers beware!

I think that the ISPA should include a list of all companies doing email based marketing and those companies should be forced to disclose where they get their contacts from. Getting removed is all good and well but your name just finds it's way onto the next list and you never get to the root of the problem.

It would also be nice if ISPA could start opening dockets against these guys.

I agree. I've been creating company specific email addresses for a while now, so I can track who is sharing/losing my emails.

I've had spam on an address provided to CAMAF (medical aid), as well as an address provided exclusively to SAA (flysaa.com).

The CAMAF case was fairly interesting. I suspect an employee had a list of email addresses (probably with other client info) on their PC, and was infected by a virus/trojan. The trojan then found the list, and sent mail to the addresses on it, from other addresses in that same list. Initially, every spam I got at that address was "from" someone else on the same list - another employee of a CA firm (deloitte, pwc, etc), then as the address spread across the net, I got the usual crap from everyone and their dog. Looking at the headers, I could see the initial mails were coming from an ADSL connection somewhere, but I couldn't get TelkomSA to give me the guy's contact details. All I got was "marlboro", or something like that.

At least I would like to have been able to warn the guy that was infected, and then break his kneecaps for having my personal medical information on an insecure machine :-)

talk about spamming - is this the 4th or 5th time this articled appeared on mybroadband in the last week? ;)

Looks like articles from different sources to me.

Although MyBB is starting to look like IOL.co.za's RSS feed, which dupes more than slashdot or digg ever does!

I get dynamic seminars and the peer group almost everyday. I'm glad they are on the list!

I have threatened a couple of places that have come by my info unlawfully, with lawsuit(e)s :D

section 45 of the ECT Act is broken so this is tough but some dockets have indeed being opened

i think it is broken because it allows mail to be sent on an unsolicited basis first up....so spammerscum.co.za can send you mail and the onus is on you to opt-out or take other steps. if you mail them back to ask where they got your details you either get ignored or told that your mail addy was picked up off the Internet. in SA, imho and given the fact that most users are clueless, an opt-in system would be preferable. there is a chance that we may still get ssuch a system when the consumer protection bill is finalised,

also the act does not empower isps to deal with the problem and this is where the action really takes place

where section 45 can be effective is where you have opted out and they continue to send you spam...

Thanks for the response dominic. I must agree with your included opinions. I am off to mail my ISP ( who does spam filtering for me for a small fee LOL! ) to include this rogues gallery in their filtering.

This is where I get the most of my problems. I don't know why they just don't tell you but they come up with every bulls..t excuse in the book as to why they can't give it to you: You subscribed, someone put your name on, we lost our records, ....

That would be brilliant.

This has happened quite a few time. The Pam Golding Concierge program was the worst. They subscribed me even though I told them not to and then kept spamming me for months after I requested that I be removed from it. I eventually emailed one of the directors of Pam Golding.

well, someone sells (ie for a fee ) our details 2 all these spammers. & imho they r a lot worse than the spammers! and whose job is it 2 deal with sms spam?

Price said The Peer Group relies on clients who enjoyed their training courses to recommend people to contact and because 90% of the feedback is excellent, the referrals are high.

I applaud you. You get put on a spam list and then use it to get some more publicity...

I get about 3000 spam mails a day (thankfully brilliantly filtered-out by Gmail), and none that I can see originated in South Africa. But if this helps some people out there, then great!
