Spanking lowers IQ

If you have issues, you need to deal with them before you can get on your high-little-horse and try preach about something you know sweet FA about.

Spanking does NOT lower the IQ, and IQ does not measure intelligence or cognitive ability in the slightest.

I have a few friends who have ridiculously high IQ's yet they're thick as two short planks because they lack common sense, etc etc...

Go have some kids then come back with your little "spanking enforces a view on a child and is not justice blah blah blah" crap...

Yeah, but when we get a car, we do a basic driving test to make sure we understand the basics. So Ill accept your analogy of comparing spanking to cars if you will be happy that anyone who spanks goes for a spanking test.
 
When your new age parenting fails and the kid's therapist has also given up, will you turn to drugs to correct your kid's behavior? It must be nice to have a drug induced obedient kid around.

You're digging too deep into the analogy now. The problem with using a knife is the person using the knife. Silly example, as was the car one, but it illustrates my point which is that just like with anything in life, the person is responsible for their own actions, and categorically stating that spanking is bad because some small-pricked dimwits abuse their kids is a little daft. Abusers will abuse regardless of whether spanking is accepted or not. Likewise, spanking is not some "gate-way-abuse" where one goes from spanking, to slapping, to punching, to full-on beatings...

I didnt say ban spanking. I was simply giving a personal reflection of what I thought, and knowing how it gets abused, and while I believe you might be enlightened to punish your kids correctly I know thats not true for everyone.

I wonder if RZa`s kids get punished for not being Christian enough.

So you'd agree then that spanking isn't all bad as long as the "spanker" is responsible and wise enough to know the difference between spanking and beating...?

I wouldnt base my criteria just on if they know the difference, but whether they can apply the difference as well. Also if they are enlightened enough to know when and how to apply it. Again using RZa as an example... he might know the difference between a beating and a hiding, but for what reasons might he apply them?

This is not a black and white issue.

You keep stating otherwise but you actually seem to have a problem with disciplining children altogether. Any form of punishment would be to enforce the parent's view on the child by your definition. In your ideal world you seem to feel children should be allowed to do what they want.

And AGAIN you fail to actually read anyone's responses! You say spanking teaches the child nothing but your, still not shared, methods of punishment do but you keep failing to take note that the process carried out prior to the discipline may well be identical. You are definitely confusing a hiding with a beating for no reason. We are not talking about child abuse here!

There are forms of psychological abuse far worse than the odd spanking anyway. I have heard the way some parents talk to their kids and belittle them. Of course in the eyes of some people this is fine because at least they are not giving them a hiding.

Yes - or locking them up in their rooms! That can cause untold psychological damage!

It's a scary thought but abuse is abuse is abuse. If he chooses to spank his kids for not being christian enough then, well, that's just his own issues coming to the fore. He's an extreme example though - more level-headed, moderate parents are likely to spank their kids as a last resort and only under certain conditions. Spanking for each and every transgression a kid makes just diminishes the point of a spank - the lesson is lost on them...
