SPCA: Highway giraffe has died

Johannesburg - The company that transported the giraffe that died in Gauteng this week said the bridge the animal hit its head on was too low, the Beeld reported on Saturday.

"We drove at a speed of 48km/h and drove safely under 31 bridges. There was no warning that the Garsfontein bridge was unsafe", marketing officer for Ditjabe Wildlife Services Dirk Boshoff was quoted as saying.

"I am not here to kill animals. I only transport them."

He said he drove behind the truck and trailer on Thursday that transported two giraffes from the Meyersdal Eco Estate in Alberton, east of Johannesburg.

The giraffe hit its head while being transported, along with another giraffe, on a truck on the N1 in Pretoria.

Boshoff said regulations were followed, however, engineer for the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project Ken Harrison told Beeld that there was nothing wrong with the bridge and that it met all the legal clearance determinations.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) is considering laying charges against the driver and said on Friday that it was still investigating and considering charges in terms of the Animal Protection Act.

Well, there are SABS regulations somewhere, haven't been able to find them yet. If those weren't followed it doesn't matter what they say...

So the trailer they were in might comply for some trips but not the trip intended I think. So the next applies:

A mass crate for the transportation of giraffes should be of closed-roof construction.

Just saw that this story has made our local newspaper. Probably because it's interesting to consider that while there's an uproar over the Copenhagen zoo culling its giraffes through euthanasia, South Africa's braining them on bridges :p

Well apparently the so-called "nature" area was not a suitable environment for the giraffes.

480ha seems like a relatively large "space", especially considering only 15% of it was developed.

Ja, it is a huge area and more than sufficient for the Giraffes.
Far Bigger than most zoos and a bit smaller than most game farms.
 
Apparently it had to do with the ecosystem, not necessarily the space.

They were shipping in most of the feed anyway. But I'm not sure what Giraffes would eat.
Probably a certain type of thorny tree.

Fair enough, but apparently they were attempting to get the relevant permits (though this should have been done earlier)... but if it was just 1 resident that complained and ended up with 2 giraffes dying, then its piss poor form on that idiot for complaining. I'm sure the giraffes were perfectly healthy on the feed being brought in for them.

No one wants to comply with anything. Eco estate doesn't want to comply with permits, transport doesn't want to comply with SABS regulations.

It's too much effort, which costs too much, and it's not as if we seem to have any sort of effective authorities to force these cretins to comply with regulations.
