Sport SUV Struggle

So after searching aggressively for 1.5 years, I finally found and bought my 'the one' SUV!

Granted it's not a sport SUV, I'm still really happy that it ticks all the boxes I needed. The SQ5 BiTDI is an amazing vehicle, but it's just impractical as an off-roader, and lacks 7 seats/the space I wanted. My V8 sedan covers my needs of a very fast vehicle. I also have another little guy on the way, so extra space became more important. The Q7 V8 was top of my list, but they are just way too rare, particularly in the year model I wanted.

She's a 2015 Q7 3.0 V6 TDI (Q7 '4L', last year model), with just about every extra I know of, other than air suspension:

Plenty fast enough for such a huge car...nearly as fast as a Gti for example.
Will get good consumption figures too from that diesel 3.0.

I have the 3.0 TDI. Getting 5.5km/100km if i drive nicely!

My advice, get a report from the dealer when you fetch it!

That feul consumption makes no sense, think you mean 5.5L/100km but even that size it's really be driving nicely. I only avg 8 on decent day

Once up to speed, if you have a surplus of power, it usually takes less fuel to keep going as opposed to a smaller engine working harder.

That, coupled with how a diesel engine works, means it's always at a good volumetric efficiency as diesels always operate with 'no throttle' vs petrol cars where your air intake is throttled, which means less pumping losses.

Diesel also has a higher calorific value per litre than petrol, so more work can be extracted out of it. Then combined with a higher compression ratio, it all adds up to give them the edge, especially at constant speeds.

No software! I only use it for driving long distances. (As in the open road).

Driving in town is a big no-no

You bought a luxury german SUV with more than 100k on the clock and no warranty or maintenance plan.

You know how to live!

To be honest it sounds like you are a 'low mileage myth' adherent. 5 - 7 years old with 100,000km – in my view that's the sweet spot!

I bought my V8 sedan at 105,000km (7 years old), and other fast sedan at 90,000km (5 years old), both without maintenance plans. Had I done so, I would have lost close to R30,000 as I've never needed mechanical repairs.

My other sedan was bought at 135,000km (6 years old) and they were able to talk me into a R12,000 maintenance plan, which again was never needed.

Yes, I now own four vehicles, which I know is stupid! At least they are all paid off, and only one is depreciating.

But if you like the idea of having some extra peace of mind, I respect that. I get mine from having a trustworthy independent mechanic.

I have the same sentiment, my father the last 20 - 25 years has always bought new with maintenance plan, which in some ways is a good insurance policy against expensive repairs. One issue he has had is when he has a major issue while on a trip, like when a power steering line ruptured on his 18 month old Mitsubishi Pajero in the middle of the Kruger National Park and he had to be towed to Nelspruit, wait for parts to be delivered, wait for the repair, get overnight accommodation and only then make his way back in to Kruger national Park.
