Springboks vs England 2012 - 3 Test tour

A few points from the match:

Final try made it appear a lot closer than it felt
Strange tactics at the base of the ruck need to be reviewed
(My possible Shark bias here) Lambie did far more at full back when he got the chance, as most suspected before the match
Morne Steyn only kicked 4 out of 7

Steyn had some difficult kicks to make. Tonight it did not go for him. IMO his overall fly-half play was great.

...@ Kopite

There is only one StevieG mate ;)

@MickeyD and SinghDude, I have a new member to the household, so been busy.

I must admit, the boks suprised me and England this evening, I was expecting up n unders all night long, instead ball in hand was kept and the game was won, like I said, well played by the Boks.

Ps: still two test to go :)

I also thought that Habana will get MoM, however Alberts also had a great game.

Meyer's selection seems to have paid of well.

Congrats!!!! Losing some sleep, are you? :p (been there... twice)

Yep, third Test is in PE and I'll be taking a stroll down to the stadium.

I can't be accused of bias but I'm not seeing Alberts as man of the match. He carried the ball up nicely, tackled solidly but really let uis down protecting the ball at the breakdown. The English turned the ball over far too easily.

The experts in studio (Mallett particularly), who I feel must know more about rugby than us, felt that it is not the loose forwards role alone but that of the nearest forward. Matfield mentioned Brussouw, Mallett felt he would not have helped as that would not be his role either. His role would be to steal England's ball when they are on attack.

I said it earlier - Meyer seems to bring out the best in him.

I noted that and refrained from commenting when you said that earlier but I will now. Habana has flourished later in this season at the Stormers. Heyneke does not coach them does he?

Steyn had some difficult kicks to make. Tonight it did not go for him. IMO his overall fly-half play was great.

Again, I will defer to the experts who also pointed out that the missed kicks made it a close game. He is known for his kicking percentages. 4 out of 7 is not great. Some of Farrell's kicks were as difficult.

A large section of the South African media really sucks. Look at these bloody headlines:

Boks squeak home in series opener

Bok bullies handed reality check

<shakes head>

Keo.co.za's reporters do suck for the most part and can't even get the scores right :

Boks start new era with disjointed win
RYAN VREDE reports on an ugly but critical 19-17 victory for the Springboks over England at Kings Park.

Good performance overall, I'd say. Couple of jitters, but that was expected and will hopefully be improved on. I was very impressed with Habana, dude had a massive workrate, was all over the park.

I just wish Frans Steyn would learn to pass, ffs! There were at least 2 opportunities (not counting the offload that wasn't on) where he should have just passed to keep the movement going.

Also, lol @ Kirchner being invisible when he was on, then going off and Lambie playing quite well. :)

Pienaar looked better at 9 than Hougaard tonight.

Agreed, Hougaard just seems to have lost a yard somewhere, very surprising. Also this tunnel ball BS, WTF is up with that?? Every clearance from the tunnel ball was under pressure and risk of charge down. Saw the baby Boks do it against Ireland where the clearance kick was actually charged down and a try was scored!!!!! WTF!!!

Boks will get better.

The Poms are not good enough ;)

Whitewash.

Agree, only 5 days together and tonight was actually quite a satisfactory performance. A lot more positives to take out of the game, Marcel looked quite at home, Eben and Juandre where good in the lineouts and tight loose, scrums were solid, Coenie looks the part, Brian is returning to form and Frans Steyn was solid on defense.

Now who on here was it that said Alberts was crap.... who is man of the match?

why is alberts MoM
I think Habana deserved it

I thought it could have gone to either Brian, Bismarck or Willem.

I'm also very impressed with Etzabeth play this evening

Legend waiting to happen. Didn't look like a debutante at all.

With Ruan on I would have been tempted to give him the kicking duties. 4 from 7 could have cost us in a closer game!!

Kickoffs were piss poor too, cleaning out of the rucks in the 1st half were piss poor too but better in the 2nd half. Definitely can build from here with these combinations.

I thought Zane had a good 1st half, as much as I was expecting him to fail...

@ Wayne

SABC2 website tv guide suggested a delayed game to start at 1830.

They lied.

MickeyD told me the same thing. I did not listen to see if it was on radio. I did not watch any news bulletins. Let me stop there before I blow a fuse.

My take:

Players who had a good game:

Alberts was great
Habana also had a great game
New Locks - I think they did really well
Pienaar played well when he came on (never thought I would say that)
Frans Steyn got over the advantage line quite a bit

Players who did not play well:

Bismark - when he went off, we played a load better and did not get pushed around by the English forwards as much. Bismark is trying to be a loose forward and it hurt us today. Missed tackles, etc.
Steyn - Too many misses could have cost us
De Villiers - He didn't have a good game, IMHO. After today's game, I would move Habana to centre in place of him and bring in a new (faster) wing
Hougard - Didn't look too great.

I am actually quite disappointed, especially after the AB game this am. They looked far stronger than us.

Wut?! De Villiers had a great game, I think. Guy was all over the place defending. Got a couple of shots from Tuilagi, but stood his ground and organised our defense well.

As for the AB's looking better, not much of a surprise. :p

Yep, in test rugby you must take whatever point come your way. I think Steyn is very disappointing in himself with those missed kicks.

Agree, but I also feel we need a proper fetcher...meaning Heinrich Brussow. It will just put that extra pressure and frustration on the opponents. In no way is this team a well oiled machine but it does have the makings. They way they played tonight with that ball running wide as often as it did gives me more hope. The back line attacked from a much deeper position as in the past - this gives more room for speed and maneuvers.
I thought Zane had a good 1st half, as much as I was expecting him to fail...
[/QUOTE]I didn't see Zane :p

I was at the game, and think we could of done better. We need to stop kicking aimlessly, meaning that when we do kick it has to be clinical. I also think we kicked a bit too much and there were a couple of times where we could of rather run the ball. Frans didnt seem to play at his best and missed a couple of offloads that would of ended in trys but I'm sure he will come right soon (its probably the hair impairing his periphrial vision).
