Spur has gone too far

Well if they thought like me, they would have kept the same theme.
But they’re right, and as posted before they can changed as they have in the past.

I do not care what Spur does at all. Just after the last boycott, our local Spur closed down. A few months later, we were on holiday and popped into another Spur. Their food are s**t and they probably appeal to a small number of people now. Have no interest in Spur, whatsoever.

This is probably just another "South African" rename / redo and all will be fine attempt. Learnt from their masters.

I consider myself a foodie but their food is good relative to price. Maybe it’s just nostalgia but I don’t mind Spur at all.

There's some amazingly good Halaal foods (not that I care about Halaal, just have many cheffy friends that are followers of Islam), but Spur isn't making them, and they also haven't a chance in hell of making it, the standard is incredibly high.

Is Spurt still a thing?

I fully agree - the last time I ate there was in the late nineties, I remember the vomiting post meal too. Best item on the menu comes sealed to your table, without a glass.
 
Braaivleis, whatsapp hockey groups, sunny skies and Spur Steak ranches.

South Africa's favourites. Just no more cultural appropriation anymore with Native Americas so I vote for a Rooinek with a pith helmet, a Boer dressed in khaki safari pack and a Zulu brandishing a spear.
Add 'n lekka bokkie in a jeans pant and we have a winner.

I’m amazed at the vitriol aimed at the Spur. Maybe it’s because I’m from overseas and there is nothing of this type that is affordable, but I genuinely don’t think you realise what a great institution you have on your hands.

I do wonder what kind of quality the people who have a pop at the place are used to?

When was the last time you were at one? It's been a while for me, only been to the airport one in the last few years, they are quite costly and quality did deteriorate at most of them.

The one in Bayside used to always be full, even before lockdown started I hadn't seen it full in a very long while (I usually go to the Asian place next to it).

Also Spurs are quite different depending on the place, I think in Worcester was the last place I had a good cheese and bacon burger at a Spur outside of airport, but this is like 4/5 years ago, and went there as the selection late in the evening is lacking.

For spur pricing one can often go to cattle Baron or something like that and come out with a similar bill, mostly due to corkage.

You are coming from view of western Europe I am guessing, saying how South Africa is cheap to eat out in comparison or something and that food pricing and quality is fine? I highly disagree with that, sure you pay more for a steak as it's not really beef areas, and you pay more for eating out, but that's because wages are better and property prices are higher, you're still earning more generally. South Africa salary hasn't been keeping up with most restaurant price increases, that's just reflective of how the CPI is based on average and average person in South Africa is probably township and doesn't go to a restaurant at the pricing of Spur, it will rather be a township place (e.g. Langa has a really nice place if you have a friend there that's very good meat and cheap).

What I meant was I come from U.K. but have lived here in the early 90s for a couple of years and now continuously since 2004.

My local Spur was pretty dreadful but it moved a couple of years ago and new owners lifted it greatly and now it’s one of the better ones. I go in occasionally for a burger and for the occasional hangover breakfast. Last time was 2 weeks ago and it was as good as I always expect it to be.

So yes I know there is different quality on display depending on where you go, but generally speaking they are great in my experience of visiting them off and on for the last 30 years.

I just don’t understand the hate I’m afraid.

There is no hate. It simply went with the times. Yes, probably if you are willing to get into your car and drive 20-100kms you may find a Spur offering you a better food experience. But, for the biggest part, I simply am not that hard-up for Spur.
