SSD Drives (120GB) Which One. Why? Newegg?

Quick question:

Are SSD drive measured like flash drives? IE, is a GB 1024 megs or 1000megs (like a HDD)?

The "missing" GB problem with HDDs has always pissed me off.

I can't comment on the ssd question, (I'm still waiting to get my first), but I've used MyUS once before, and they worked out great. I've actually got a $ 2000 package sitting at MyUS, waiting to be shipped, but it's all stuff that's not available here, or stuff that's just insanely more costly (Eg: velcro cable ties: $ 0.09 each = R 0.63, locally - R 3.50, Sony video server: $ 730 = R 5 110, locally - R 14 000, I could go on). And I'm consolidating it all into one shipment - shipping should only be R 1 500, or R59 per pound. shipping one item at a time isn't really worth while.

Thanks, I understand SATA III is no biggie, but to be fair, i did spend extra to get a Mobo with SATA 3, seems silly not to use it.

If the drive does not exceed 250 MB/s read speed then you are not going to use the capabilities of SATA 3. If the drive reads at 250MB/s+ then look for SATA 3.

300mb/s is the max for SATA2, thats taking into account the encoding used.
 
Technically 384MB/s is the limit for SATA 2, seeing that it's limit is 3Gbps, but like Archer said, you will not attain that kind of data transfer rate due to overhead / encoding.

I got my G.Skill Phoenix 120GB for R1999 at Wootware a few weeks ago :P I still can't believe that I paid like R1400 for a 30GB OCZ Vertex in the beginning of this year.
 
Got a OCZ Vertex 2 - 120 Gig in my laptop for 2,5 month and definitely money well spent.

Anandtech and Tomshardware got some nice benchmarks on SSD's, might give you insight in what to buy.

Has helped me a lot on buying decisions hence the OCZ vertex 2.
 
300mb/s is the max for SATA2, thats taking into account the encoding used.

With overheads you will be lucky to reach the theoretical 300MB/s, 250MB/s is about as good as it gets.

PS. Mega=M, Byte=B, bit=b else we are not on the same page ;)

Virtual machines will run sweet on SSD.

120Gb is a bit small for me since I am using many virtual machines but I guess it would be the only option since the price differential between 256Gb drives is huge.
I am in two minds if I must wait a year.

It would run sweet on it, but I would regard that having at least 4 CPU cores (with VT support of course) and more than 4GB of RAM are more important!

I'm often running VM's from a SATA drive at my office and they are starting up very fast, since they barely have any applications installed on them.
I think that some of my VM's actually starts up faster (in roughly 20 seconds) than my Ubuntu 10.04 which is running from an OCZ Vertex 2 30GB (about 30 seconds from a cold start).

120GB SSD should be more than enough for running like 12 copies of Linux server/desktop, however it won't be able to handle more than 4 or 5 Windows 7 copies.

Of course they matter.

I work with files that can be 1.5gb in size. R/W plays a massive role. That is why i would love to have that ssd that R and W at 400+.

For the average person though you are correct.

anandtech have got some extensive articles on the topic... quite technical and looong very very worth reading. Im so glad I did before I bought my SSD
