Station Strangler set for release

I was 7 in 1986 when the fist bodies were discovered, I had to walked 20/25 minutes alone to school.
I was the same age, living in Westridge and walking to Westville Primary, probably 15/20 mins for me. Usually walked alone as well, brother went to a different school even though he was one grade ahead of me.
Mom walked us both to school for dunno how long when we heard of this ou.

Given the option would you take the death penalty or stay in prison for 30 years?

I think I will rather be put out of my misery. But hey some people just deserve death penalty anyway.

I lived right there, by the grey pin, Volstruis Street; in that same time frame.
I attended Weltevreden Primary and Hillside Primary.
Walked to school alone most of the time. :crying:

I used to cross the hill between Rocklands and Westridge every Sunday as well.
There was a shebeen over the hill on Westridge side, we would walk and go buy our drinking supply in the middle of the night/morning, the owner would send a kid who was packing to escort us over the hill back as the gangsters was robbing aand interfering with her business.

You lived in Rocklands as well? Which road did you live in?

This article backs up what you stated:

Nirmala Gopal, said any individual can reform or be rehabilitated.

"However, one would need to scrutinise this individual’s history both within and outside of prison. If during his time in prison, he has shown sufficient remorse and apologised to the families of the victims and demonstrated behavior traits suggesting that he has transformed, then we could say rehabilitation was possible for him," she said.

Gopal said it would also be up to the psychologists in prison to ensure that the psychometric tests that he (Simons) undertook indicate that he has been rehabilitated.

I doubt Gopal has treated or dealt with serial killers. - "... shown sufficient remorse" is not going to cut it - they are usually psychopaths or sociopaths and remorse does not feature in their range of emotions. Also, a serial killer does not transform in a few years.

Wow.

Yip, it was a tense time. The problem was there were no crowd control, so most of the kids/teenagers went to go view the bodies, I declined to go with, since looking at decomposing bodies was never my thing, and I have seen enough dead bodies in my life.

The kids that came back was shaken from seeing the bodies. If you ask where were the parents, most parents were at work.

Then the next that happen was they started to chase and attack any stranger in the area. As I said, tense times.

I remember people wanting to take the law into their own hands, innocent people being assaulted, and chaotic scenes outside court when Simons was arrested.

Simons will be under house arrest for the rest of his life, and will be staying with his cousin in Parow – a decision that has residents up in arms.

A community dialogue concerning his residency in Parow went south on Tuesday night, when residents staged a walk-out in protest of regional Department of Correctional Services (DCS) Commissioner Delekile Klaas’s remarks that “any of you can be a rapist”.

Klaas then went on to say that Simons “will be released” and that the dialogue is not about “asking for permission” from the residents.

A member of the Parow Community Police Forum (CPF) and the chairperson of the Neighbourhood Watch, Stephan Carstens, who spoke to the Cape Times in his capacity as a resident, said they were up in arms over the decision to “move” Simons to Parow.

I hope Klaas will be available for comment when Simons is arrested for killing his next victim

“We have had a case of Tazne van Wyk who was killed by a parolee in our midst in and around the same Parow area. We don’t have faith in the government and the justice system.

We have lots of schools in our area. “They spoke about rehabilitation but not the extent of his rehabilitation, there weren’t kids in there, he was incarcerated with adults, yet his weakness is seemingly young children, and they now say he has been rehabilitated

All valid concerns, are there restrictions in place on his movements, how will they ensure he does not go near to schools?

I would almost bet on it that the folks from the areas he terrorised in the 80s will track him and hunt him down.

He is living with his cousin in Parow. How hard can it be for them to find him?

If they can be transformed at all. Numerous serial killers, upon their capture, have admitted that it was a good thing because they would've just kept on going. That is how most get caught anyway and how Bundy was caught, they lose control of their urge and become reckless.

Some killers are also more than capable of going through long periods between crimes before doing it again. Dahmer went 9-years between his first and second murders, and the fantasies/urges he had never went away during this period.

28-years in prison doesn't mean what drove this guy isn't still lurking there, waiting for something to trigger it again.

He will be given set times that he must be at home, and he will have 4 hours a week time to go to the shops etc. He will get a couple of hours each day to go and look for work, if he does not have work. But in the begining he will have little freedom to move around... on paper. In reality, the DCS Community Corrections must be heavily understaffed. Considering how small their offices are and how many people are on parole, accros a huge area. With the cost of petrol for example how do they still manage to go around and visit guys at home to see if they are sticking the rules etc. So yes his movements will be restricted, but it is not going to be checked up on as you would want. They are at best going to tell him you are not allowed near a school, but that will be that. They are not going to monitor him.
