It is ridiculous how expensive things have become. a basic 60K service at a VW for a Polo ended up costing R7K. They replaced two wiper blades at around R700-R800 each. The labour to install them was about R350. for a fscken 5 minute job - if you have never done it before. I only found out later as the vehicle costs are paid by the fleet company. So it was not money out of my pocket but damn car prices are nuts.

It’s fuked, Ted.

Nowadays, we genuinely need to question everything a dealer says. I have a major service coming up and they are saying I’m looking at about R18K. I’ll honestly just get someone else to do it.

Yeah that's insane. Find out what is on the service list, buy the parts at midas or wherever and get someone else to do the work. Make some calls asking for labour charges.

Best is to make an appointment and stick around while they do it so they can't stiff you on the labour time or pretend to do work they didn't do. Just say you wanna watch cause you're trying to learn more about cars.

My private car long out of warranty , also a VW, is serviced by a 1 man garage shop. He is amazing, and yes, can be expensive for some parts , but I switched to him , when VW all those years also wanted to charge like 14k for a service cos something needed replacing, etc. Got it done with him , for 6k all in.

He also in second year showed me an aircon filter that was so filthy that he said, from his experience it was never changed - despite VW stealership in Rivonia claiming to have done it - this was when the car was still on the VW service plan.

Anyway, this country does have the law / regulation now, that you can service your car anywhere (if I remember correctly) so as long as said place does service to car as per manufacturer specs , then the warranty holds. More people need to do this - especially as many cars in this country appear now to be sold without a service/maintenance plan !

re major service coming up :

1) Just ask the dealer for a printout of what will be done for the XYZ service, they will print out a list of parts that they will change and their price + labour

2) Then you can compare WTF they are actually doing, like changing a pollen filter or spark plugs etc which most likely don't need changing. Their favourite is charging you R1,000 for 5L of oil + R1,000 labour to change it

3) Rule 3 = never go to a dealer for a service, ever

The motor industry deserves whatever its coming it's way. That is robbery without a firearm.

And I thought BMW was insane when they quoted me R8,000 for brakes (x4) on my Mini.

Hi-Qi quoted me R9,000 just for the front!

I had them done at a local brake specialist for R3,500.00

I don't know what's worse:
- The price they are charging or,
- The fact that someone actually paid the price..

..... or maybe i am just too poor

Hi Guys,

I am looking at some of these service costs and still consider myself lucky. I drive a 2020 Honda Jazz and was quoted R12000 today from Honda for a 90k service. The car has a timing chain, not a belt....don't know where they suck these figures from. Anyway can anyone recommend a service place in or around Sandton that does a decent job on Honda's? Not prepared to pay R12k for a service.

Those discs are like £50 aftermarket here. That's madness, R10k each

That's a crazy price but probably includes a few extras like gearbox oil if it's cvt, I hope.
Post a screenshot of the quote for the 90k service so we can see what they are wanting to charge you for.

Iridium spark plugs are costly, but at least is not replaced every 30k km like normal ones.

Honda rips you a new one if you use their ones, rather just get the NGK ones
