Durban woman’s 30th birthday car gift to self turns sour after buying a R200,000 lemon

A Durban woman who wanted to celebrate her 30th birthday in style by rewarding herself with a car, is now living in regret and agony after her R200,000 purchase from the Cars R Us dealership has turned into an expensive lemon.

Sinegugu Kunene, 30, from Wyebank, Durban, said purchasing the car left her in distress instead of improving her life.

Kunene is now at loggerheads with the dealership and she left the car with them in January after it broke down.

The mother of two bought a Hyundai i20 from the Cars R Us dealership in Umgeni Road on November 20.

The Standard Bank-financed car, which she is still paying a monthly instalment of R3,800 for, stopped working after it broke down suddenly nearly a month later.

Surely it is standard practice for the stealerships to service a vehicle before they sell it?


They serviced my tricycle before I bought it. Even got a Classic Silver Plated Bell included.

I get you and agree, but a service isn't going to fix a fscked cylinder head.
This just emphasises the need to check the vehicle's service record thoroughly, both books and computer records, and always be prepared to walk away, don't get emotionally connected to any potential vehicle.

But also this, steep rural roads and the back seat packed with XXXL grannies... then again the engine should have survived, the clutch not so much.

problem is even if she had wised up and brought a mechanic with her to buy the car, even a mechanic who works on cars day in and day out could have missed that.
one needs to prepare a bit of cash for when things DO go wrong, and shop around, but yes I do know the feeling,

recently went through a similar experience, with my Getz, so far its going, but yes, Clutch needed doing, brakes needed doing, aircon pump busted, needs removal and the bearing redone,
but thats the nature of the game, luckily I didn't spend a fortune, unlike this chick.

200K would have brought a NEW car, and if she was prepared to spend that much on a car, I would have gone down that road.
what I have learned so far is trust nobody, everything is a lie, and be prepared to do simple things yourself and with some youtube videos.

like how I replaced Cluster globes myself, after watching how to take the Cluster apart with a few screws and some swearing.

Cars are complex machines and you need to invest some time learning how they work, unless you want to be paying a fortune for somebody to tell you how they fixed it,
when all they did was wash it a bit and tell you its good now.

and how I found originals Parts are essentially a fancy box with a part you buy from Goldwagen,
again, everything is a LIE, everything is Fake and trust nobody, do your own homework and compare compare and then compare a bit more.

Saw that. VW sold him someone else's problem and didn't disclose the 'repair' (actually still fked) and want to charge him to fix it. (its a 2 year old car ffs).

Then there is the price. R85k for a touch screen system. In a Polo. WTF. Then there are the R110k DSG replacements and 1.0 TSI motors blowing up left right and center.

VW are one of the worst lately but the whole industry is going this way. Almost every car is ultra sophisticated with no longevity and repair costs lead to early write-offs. What's the point of a not-so-efficient 1l engine if the whole car must be thrown away in 5 years.

Why can't we buy a nice car that is simple to repair? The only simple cars are match boxes. Anything more luxury has to come with more touch screens and an iStore. Imagine a nice sized car (think e-class) with a nice comfy leather interior, analogue everything and a good old 3l straight six. It will last much longer and be cheaper to maintain.

I really hope some manufacturer starting moving back this way.
