Enough of this silly noob advice. I would suggest you rather do is this:

After you've downloaded the game from Steam. On the Steam interface, Click on the Steam option and look for the "Backup and Restore Games..." option. Just follow the on-screen instructions and Steam will make a nice Backup file of the entire game for you.

Then when you want to restore the game, you can simply restore it from the same menu as when you first made the backup.

ok cool, I tried this before I tried the below and it only works when you backing up your own stuff, and then restoring onto your own account. When you backup from account 1 and try to restore using account 2 then it asks for a cd-key (which I have no idea where to find)

Make sure that your Steam\steamapps\common\borderlands folder overwrites his Steam\steamapps\common\borderlands folder.

Then, when Steam tries to download it, it will see the files are already there. Easy-peasy

This worked like a charm. Thanks dude. We didnt wanna sit downloading Borderlands like a zillion times. I copied it into this folder, unpaused the download and it whizzzed through like it was download over fibre optic!! Was just verifying the folder I assume...

Hit play on that machine and all sorted!

It says that but if you watch it come down it jumps when it finds files in your folder already. It's not consistenet as sometimes it shortens the download size and sometimes not.

it is bothersome though.

one would expect it to "look through" your game folder and then only once finished with that, start to download.

ie if I never thought it would do the jump, I would have every time it wanted to update a game, cancelled it.
