Hi

My MacBook Pro was stolen a couple of weeks ago. It attempted a DropBox sync about 30 mins ago from IP 196.45.42.66

Is there a way to trace this IP?

Please, any help will be greatly appreciated!

Looks like that lappy somehow made it to Tanzania...

Usually, to get more information than that on an IP address, you will need the help of said ISP, who will request that you first get a police warrent that states it specifically need information on which user had that ip address at a specific time, so that you can get that information, and have the police arrest said person/s. Now the problem is, that is how it usually works in SA, you now have to deal with another country...

Best of luck.

@Speedster... Do you not have iCloud on that Macbook? because then you can trace it, if Dropbox is still on it, then your iCloud will still be on it.

Try email SimbaNet (http://www.simbanet.co.tz/contact-us) and find out if they are willing to help. Some parts of Tanzania are more jacked up than you may think.

Its a really really long shot. But if you managed to get someone arrested in Tanzania and recover the laptop, it would be one of the most intense stolen laptop recoveries ever.

I know someone coming back from there in three weeks. You've got three weeks. Go ;) haha

where/how was it stolen may I ask?

I have find my mac activated for this reason.

Hey Spoon. Unfortunately I didn't have iCloud on it

Anyway, I've got a friend who happens to be working in Dar es Salaam at the moment. He's looking into it for me. Will keep you updated. You're right - this could just be the most insane laptop recovery EVER!

It was stolen from our church in Hatfield on Sunday 17 June. I have findmymac (iCloud) and Prey installed on my replacement, unfortunately not on the original though.

Just find out which parishioners at the church were from Tanzania -- or possibly missionaries
Maybe they just thought G D has answered their prayers ?

ME -- I trust NO-ONE
