If there is already a thread like this, then please direct me there.

I have finally decided to start streaming TV, but have a lot of questions and would like advise on where to get started.

Who knows this thread might help others too.

The intention is evaluating whether our family could get away with cancelling our DSTV subscription.

Fibre was installed in our area at the end of 2018 and I'm happy enough with the performance of the 50Mb line and general use that I am comfortable to try expand its use to streaming TV.

I bought the Xiaomi Mi TV Box S and will be laying CAT cables to the room where it is being used this weekend.

The kids are keen on Netflix. I have been using it for Twitch and speed seems fine over wifi, but I am still planning on getting CAT cable there to improve stability.

Some initial questions:

1. What are the MUST HAVE services beside Netflix?

2. Is a VPN subscription required?

3. What happens to that habit of getting home in the afternoon, switching the TV on in the background and just watching / listening to what's on - does one stop doing that or are there channels that stream "scheduled" programming?

4. What is Plex used for and will I need it?

5. How do you find the shows you want to watch? ie we will need to stay current on a particular show and it does not show on Netflix - how do I find out what streaming service to use? Will I have to subscribe for a month or do you buy a specif season of a show?

Kodi and Exodus FTW

Thanks. I have looked at Kodi, but why would I need it on the Xiaomi Mi. The MI has it's own OS that does the same thing or am I mistaken?

I have Googled Exodus and only get Bible and Travel service related hits. What is Exodus?

Exodus is an addon available for Kodi (among many other addons). Essentially a central place for TV Shows, movies etc.
I'd also suggest getting paying the nominal fees for a real debrid account.

It's relatively easy to install and configure. Google helps :)

We have 2 Android tv's at home... MiBox & Ematic.

To watch tv shows and movies we use CyberFlix. This has pretty much everything that is out.
If you have a Real Debrid account the amount and quality of links you get is pretty great.
And create a Trakt account so everything syncs in your watched history etc

For live tv you can subscribe to an IPTV service
there are many, some good, some bad... Some allow multiple devices/connections VOD etc.
Get a trial and find one that works for you.

We also have Netflix which works on the Smart TVs but that content is available on Cyberflix.

That pretty much takes care of streaming for our house without the need for more subscriptions and apps etc.

I know - last updates in May AFAIK which is ages ago.
I'm almost certain theres been updates post May. Not 100% sure, I gloss over and exit the changelog window I get that pops up when I launch Exodus. Will read the changelog later and see what it says

Either way though, works flawlessly for me with real-debrid and hasn't failed to find premium streams for any of the content our household consumes across all of the streaming services (Amazon,Netflix, Hulu etc)

I looked into CyberFlix and it seems as if the legality of the offer is questionable. I am also not keen on "sideloading" apps and jumping through hoops every couple of days / weeks to make TV happen.

I am hoping to get advise on legal and low hassle options.

Nobody on Terrarium TV? only the best thing since sliced bread.... after all the update issues (start of this year if i remember) it has been AWESOME

Legal? LOL.... what you worried about buddy? SABC knocking on your door?

@DiabloDane
What do you guys average on data usage monthly?
And how many are you in a family?
Average watching time can help too?

Also recommend a TV box would be cool... thinking of doing this as i have 40gig a month and often dont use all..
But ill probably end up getting more data sooner or later.

Both Exodus and Exodus Redux is outdated. Rather use one of the following:

Scrubs v2
One of the newest Exodus forks around. This is a hoster add-on, so you shouldn't need a VPN, but it will work better with a premium service like Real-Debrid or Premiumize but is not necessary.

Current Version: 4.5.8
Instructions for adding this repo:
  • Go to the Kodi file manager.
  • Click on "Add source"
  • The path for the source is https://jewbmx.github.io/ (Give it the name "Jewbmx").
  • Go to "Addons"
  • In Addons, install an addon from zip. When it asks for the location, select "Jewbmx", and install repository.jewrepo-*.zip
  • Go back to Addons install, but this time, select "Install from repository"
  • Select the "Jewbmx Repo"
  • Go into the "Video add-ons" section in the repo, and you'll find Scrubs v2
Be sure to Authenticate your Debrid Providers if you have RD or PM in URLresolver/ResolveURL

Venom
A cleaned up and Trimmed down Exodus Fork by 123Venom. It is updated frequently and has fixed many things that have been left broken for a long time in many Exodus Forks. Uses OpenScrapers as well

Current Version: 3.1.8
Instructions for adding this repo:
  • Go to the Kodi file manager.
  • Click on "Add source"
  • The path for the source is https://123venom.github.io (Give it the name "Venom").
  • Go to "Addons"
  • In Addons, install an addon from zip. When it asks for the location, select "Venom", and install repository.venom-1.*.zip
  • Go back to Addons install, but this time, select "Install from repository"
  • Select the "Venom repo"
  • Go into the "Video add-ons" section in the repo, and you'll find the Venom addon
Be sure to Authenticate your Debrid Providers if you have RD or PM in URLresolver/ResolveURL

Alfa
Alfa is a Kodi Spanish video add-on located in the Catoal Repository. It has sections for movies, TV Shows, Anime, Documentaries, Direct, Downloads, and more. It is one of the best spanish addons for kodi, though its very different than your average Exodus fork.

Current Version: 2.8.25
Instructions for adding this repo:
  • Go to the Kodi file manager.
  • Click on "Add source"
  • The path for the source is http://a4k.redditreaper.tech/addons/ (Give it the name "A4K Extra Repos").
  • Go to "Addons"
  • In Addons, install an addon from zip. When it asks for the location, select "A4K Extra Repos", and install repository.alfa-addon-*.zip
  • Go back to Addons install, but this time, select "Install from repository"
  • Select the "Alfa repo"
  • Go into the "Video add-ons" section in the repo, and you'll find the Alfa addon
Be sure to Authenticate your Debrid Providers, it's a bit tricky though, you need to turn it on in settings and its menu based settings first and then look for a link and it should prompt you to authenticate RD in Alfa. Once it does you should be good to go. Be careful as this addon has p2p torrent functionality with no easy way to turn it off.

THE CREW
A new Exodus fork, with lots of sections for niche content. They have sections for sports, standup, adult content, and even live TV streams!
Current Version: 0.0.29
Instructions for adding this repo:
  • Go to the Kodi file manager.
  • Click on "Add source"
  • The path for the source is https://repo.the-crew.xyz/ (Give it the name "the-crew").
  • Go to "Addons"
  • In Addons, install an addon from zip. When it asks for the location, select "the-crew", and install repository.thecrew-1.*.zip
  • Go back to Addons install, but this time, select "Install from repository"
  • Select "THE CREW"
  • Go into the "Video add-ons" section in the repo, and you'll find the THE CREW add-on
Be sure to Authenticate your Debrid Providers if you have RD or PM in ResolveURL.
