Stuck on EDGE, unable to switch to 3G (E1820 / E1752?)

Ginggs - unfortunately since setting it to '3G Only' with MDMA I now can't get any Cell C 3G signal. I only see Cell C 2G and the usual manual refresh doesn't bring up the Cell C 3G network - it brings up every other network (2G and 3G) but only Cell C 2G. Eish!

Are you sure you used the latest beta version of MDMA?

Use the Cell C dashboard to set the band to 'All Bands' and follow the steps in wndrbees' post earlier in this thread to try and get back on to UMTS 900.

Problem with Cell C dongle connection speed

Hello everyone ;)

I bought myself a Cell C E1752 (7.2mbps) dongle today with 2GB cap monthly.

I currently reside in Bloemfontein (LHP). When I got home I connected to the network, and more specifically with HSDPA. Then after a few minutes I could only get an EDGE connection and I have been unable, for hours, to reconnect with HSDPA.

I have followed some advice I found on MyBB:
1) Tried to register with another network and then with Cell C, didn't work.
2) Tried MDMA with the 3G only option. Didn't work.

I know the dongle isn't faulty since my Vodacom sim gives me access to HSPA and UPA (I think those were the acronyms). I also know HSDPA is available in this area since I had an HSDPA connection this afternoon. (Even though the signal strength wasn't too good.)

Does anyone have some advice for me?

Hey everyone, please disregard my last post. I'm now torrenting at an average of 150kbps. I think the network might have been overloaded earlier. :)

Coverage in Somerset west?

I am only picking up EDGE in somerset west. I am located in the centre of the coverage map, so theoretically I shouldn't have a problem. On Friday and Saturday I had HSPA+ however, the last two days only EDGE. Any body else experiencing this? or is it my faulty modem?

Only connecting to edge now

Purchased the Cell C 5gb package on friday. Worked amazingly till saturday afternoon, connected everytime to 3G RSSI at 73dB both at my home in Parkview Johannesburg and in Hatfield Pretoria.

Since Saturday afternoon it has dropped to edge, can't connect 3G, can't even find 3G using MDMA. Phoned technical support they say there have been a few complaints but everything there side seems fine. In PTA Im located 1km from the Cell C store. In JHB I'm close to Killarney (think theres a tower there).

I don't understand how it can work so exceptional well for a few days then suddenly now I can't even get a decent EDGE signal. Vodacom and MTN 3G work great in both locations but this amazing new network of Cell C, in good coverage areas according to their coverage map, can't even connect to 3G. Last night I was connected here in Hatfield to 3G for around 30mins managed a speedtest @ 45ms latency, 5mb/s down. Then the signal just vanished and can't connect since then.

Have tried reinstalling the software on 2 machines, Cell C drivers from their website don't work, have tried forcing 3G with MDMA but it can't pickup a good signal.

Anyone else near Parkview or Hatfield been experiencing similar problems?

Similar to my prob, although i got my 21mbps speedstick today and have had problems the whole day with connections... on and off, slow then fast.... cant get it to stay on or stay fast... Im in East London tho

Hi Decotey

You can email us on [email protected] and we will get the Network Team to Investigate the problem.

Dropped them an email still no response it's been over 48 hours

I walked into the store with my modem and even in the store it couldn't find 3G, tested it with their modem and it works 100%. So it must be a provisioning problem. But I'm still struggling to get it sorted.

Atleast I know it isn't driver related or poor coverage. They probably shut down my sim card after surfing too much porn or something :p

* Make sure you have the latest beta version, i.e. 1.0.0.31 beta 5, of MDMA on gingg's post here
* Have you tried manually connecting to another network e.g. Vodacom to force it off Cell C and then back again to Cell C 3G (as explained in earlier post in thread) ?

Cheers

Hi wndrbees.

Thanks for the advice, I previously scanned through that thread and tried some of the stuff, but this time I persisted a bit longer.
I changed the band to GSM 900/1800 etc. in the Cell C app then did the manual search and after a few attempts of refreshing and trying to register with vodacom (it eventually did) it picked up Cell C 3G again. Unfortunately its only connecting to HSDPA now and not HSPA+ :( But hopefully that will come right.

Im having some issues with that latest beta version, getting an error 603 which says phone book number isn't set and Im not sure exactly why it's throwing up that error (version 1.0.0.30 of MDMA works without that error.)

Now it's connecting to HSPA+ for 2 mins with full speed then dies to 0 :(
This Cell C is more trouble than it's worth

This error?

Can't find the error you're referring me to on that page, I tried searching the forum for the error but couldn't seem to find it. Error states: "Error 63: The system could not find the phone book entry for this connection."

Thanks

Oops sorry was right there infront of my eyes ><
haha thanks

Struggled for an hour to connect to Cell 3G with my E1820. Couldn't get MDMA or the Cell C dash to make the modem register on Cell C 3G. After numerous tries of registering on 2G, MTN, 8ta, etc. etc. closing the dash, reopening, etc it eventually connected on Cell C 3G. Signal is now 96% with Cell C dash and MDMA now also connects first time (signal -79 dBm). WTF?

EDIT: My joy was short lived. Disconnected the modem and dash and after trying to go back on, the modem is "stuck"/unresponsive again. MDMA shows a 3G signal strength of -71dBm, but no network name. Cell C dash shows no signal. Can't register or connect on Cell C 3G. This is really frustrating!!

Damn! Damn! Damn!!

There was no band selected in the Cell C dashboard. After reading the above message, I selected the appropriate band and this time, Cell C 3G was available, whereas before it only showed 2G.

Speeds are back to WHOOOSH!!

Thanks, Ajax and the rest of the guys who posted in this thread!

Remove the modem from your pc, reconnect it and go to settings>options>network>network band>GSM900/GSM1800/W900/WCDMA2100.>Apply>ok. Disconnect modem again and reconnect it, It shout now connect to WCDMA/HSPA+ if the network is not experiencing any problems in your area.

Finally narrowed my problem down to a 1 metre USB extension cable I have been using. When I plug the modem into my PC directly, it works on 3G and EDGE. With the cable I can only do EDGE. Problem is then the 3G signal isn't so great as in the window when I use the cable to put the modem in the window. Still don't know why the cable is causing a problem. It works fine with other devices like cameras and memory sticks.
