Sudden Shut off

Ive recently converted from Windows to Ubuntu

Lately, since installing Ubunti 13.10 my laptop will randomly switch off.

Any ideas?

Have a look under /var/log/messages.

Thats pretty much like the Windows event log equivalent

Surely that would be /var/log/syslog in ubuntu?
But yeah check for shutdown events, should give you some clues as to what is happening.

Yes - you could be right. I'm not a ubuntu fan

With a older version of Knoppix I had this problem on my HP laptop. The issue was that Knoppix failed to turn on the CPU fan and the laptop over heated. The easiest fix was to enable the CPU fan permanently in the bios.
