So it seems like the Cheetahs will be playing in the Northern Hemisphere Pro 12 according to an article on Netwerk24. I couldn't find an english version.

What is says is that the Cheetahs and Saru reached an agreement that will benefit the Cheetahs financially.

The shocking thing for me is that the Lions were on the short list with the Cheetahs and Southern Kings to lose their place in 2018 according to the Saru criteria. :wtf: Apparently the Bulls, Stormers and Sharks were notified that they are safe and will be in SuperRugby 2018.

Die Cheetahs is uit die Superreeks vir 2018 en dit is waarskynlik dat ’n aankondiging binnekort gemaak sal word om te bevestig dat die span wel in die Noordelike Halfrond se Pro12-reeks sal speel.

Saru se komitee van uitvoerende hoofde het Vrydag in groot geheimhouding ’n tweede keer vanjaar vergader. ’n Aanbod wat die Cheetahs nie kon weier nie, is glo aan hulle gemaak. Die aanbod kan die Cheetahs se geldsake baie versterk.

Vir die Leeus is dit ’n verligting, want gemeet aan Saru se kriteria waarvolgens spanne se Super-status bepaal is en wat sou geld om te bepaal wie in 2018 se verkleinde reeks sou speel, was die Leeus die ander span wat in die spervuur was.

Die Leeus, die Cheetahs en Southern Kings is die drie spanne wat die laagste plekke volgens die kriteria ingeneem het. Dit ondanks die feit dat die Leeus verlede jaar en vanjaar Suid-Afrika se grootste uitblinker in die Superreeks was.

Saru het die Bulle, Haaie en Stormers glo reeds onlangs ingelig dat hulle op grond van die kriteria in volgende jaar se Superreeks sal speel.

Die Cheetahs het Saru se proses van uitdunning laat ontspoor toe hulle met regstappe gedreig het.

Volgens die Cheetahs sou Saru hulle skuldig maak aan kontrakbreuk omdat die Cheetahs ’n geldige kontrak het om tot 2020 in die Superreeks te speel.

Die Cheetahs se deelname aan die Pro12-reeks kan voordele vir hul buurunies, die Griekwas en die Griffons, inhou. Die Cheetahs kan noodgedwonge van Griekwas en die Griffons se spelers in die Europese reeks gebruik, aangesien die Vrystaat in dieselfde tyd ook in die Curriebeker-reeks sal speel.

Die moontlikheid bestaan dat Jurie Roux, uitvoerende hoof van Saru, in sy onderhandelinge met die base van die oorsese reekse ook vir die Southern Kings ’n plek in die Pro12 beding het.

’n Ander opsie vir Saru om die Kings te akkommodeer, is om hulle aan ’n Amerikaanse reeks te laat deelneem.

Die Kings verloor verskeie van sy sterre ná vanjaar se Superreeks en dis onseker of hulle genoeg tyd het om ’n sterk span vir die Pro12-reeks bymekaar te kry.

Die Cheetahs, en moontlik ook die Kings, se deelname aan ’n kompetisie van die Noordelike Halfrond word egter as ’n positiewe stap beskou omdat dit onder meer nuwe inkomstestrome vir Suid-Afrikaanse rugby sal verseker.

The Waratahs has beaten Suntory Goliath 21-19, but these two sides were essentially A sided. It was all down to Suntory missing one conversion which was charged down, they could have drawn the match.

Cape Town - The Cheetahs have reiterated their stance after fresh reports emerged that their entry into the PRO12 competition in Europe is a "done deal".

Following SANZAAR’s decision to cut the Super Rugby tournament from 18 to 15 teams, the Cheetahs and Southern Kings are being widely tipped as the most likely South African sides to lose their status in the tournament.

Recent reports suggested that two South African teams could join the PRO12 - a European competition that currently includes club teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

The BBC reported earlier this month that the Cheetahs were formally invited to take part in the PRO12.

At the time, the Bloemfontein-franchise refrained from commenting on their Super Rugby future, saying that the matter was "sub judice".

However last Sunday, Afrikaans newspaper Rapport indicated that SA Rugby and the Cheetahs had come to an agreement for them to exit Super Rugby and join the PRO12.

But when probed on the matter this week, the Cheetahs stood by their initial statement.

According to Netwerk24, a statement issued by the Cheetahs on Monday read: “The matter remains sub judice. No decision has been made. Any rumours regarding Super Rugby and the PRO12 are premature and unfounded. No further comment regarding this matter will be made.”

However despite the Cheetahs’ comments, Sport24 understands that their Super Rugby fate is sealed, along with that of the Port Elizabeth-based Kings.

Official announcements are expected to be made in due course, with both teams likely to join the PRO12 in what will then become the PRO14.

There certainly won't be the same pressure as they experience more in Super Rugby. The threat of constantly being thrown out of the competition can't help, surely. They'll also learn plenty of new tricks which could help them in the Currie Cup.

Pro 12 and the Currie Cup run at the same time. Pro 12 September to May and Currie cup August to October.

Ah. Thank you for that. This makes things a little different. Could they play both competitions. Might be a real tall order.

Also Cheetahs players can't sign for Japanese teams, the Top League run from August to January.

Surely this won't be ideal for them. They still won't play at the times the Super Rugby is on.

And won't be able to compete with a first class side in one of the two competitions if they are at the same time.

Doesn't make sense unless there will be a change in dates the comps are played somehow.

Mohoje heading to Stormers?

Springbok and Cheetahs flanker Oupa Mohoje could be set to join the Stormers from next year.

According to Netwerk24, Western Province Rugby are keen to lure Mohoje to Cape Town in order to add to their loose forward stocks, with SA Rugby potentially set to help present a tripartite deal.

Besides the attempts to lure Mohoje to the Stormers, Kings flank CJ Velleman and Cheetahs winger Sergeal Petersen are also in line to make the move to the Mother City.

However, flyhalf Robert du Preez could be set to join the Sharks, where his father serves as the head coach.

Blitzboks stars Rosco Speckman, Chris Dry and Cecil Afrika will be available to the Cheetahs until the end of October, writes CRAIG LEWIS.

Although the Cheetahs have struggled in Super Rugby this year, they will be determined to finish the campaign well and launch a successful defence of their domestic title later this season.

Interestingly, the Cheetahs have now bolstered their squad with the arrival of three influential Springbok Sevens stars.

Speckman, Dry and Afrika all joined the Cheetahs in training on Monday, with the Cheetahs confirming that they will remain with the team until the end of this season's Currie Cup.

Speckman was a standout performer for the Blitzboks during the successful 2016-17 World Rugby Sevens Series campaign, while the experienced Dry and Afrika also played influential roles.

It now remains to be see what sort of roles they may fulfil for the Cheetahs as they add to the backline options available for the next few months.

Steven Kitshoff was in training with the DHL Stormers on Monday and, while coach Robbie Fleck is delighted to see the Springbok back in the thick of things at his former franchise, it does leave him with a dilemma.

Kitshoff’s contract with French club Bordeaux officially ends on 30 June, which means he is available to play for the Stormers in their Vodacom Super Rugby derby against the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday. What team would not want Kitshoff to play for them after the outstanding contribution he made as a replacement to the Boks in their 3-0 series triumph against France?

However, it is not as simple as that for Fleck. On one hand he wants Kitshoff to play as he wants his team to hit the winning track and build up momentum ahead of the play-off phase, which the Stormers are now assured of getting to. They need one log point to be absolutely sure, but realistically the race for top spot in their section has been run.

On the other hand, the Stormers are going to have to dig up a good reason for Kitshoff to be available for the knock-out stage because at the moment he doesn’t qualify. He can only play a maximum of three games for the Stormers in the league phase of the competition, which is short of the minimum requirement for a player not listed in the squad at the start of the season.

Fleck says he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Kitshoff playing for the Stormers in the play-offs, but it does seem unlikely, which means that selecting him for the matches building up to that point might be counter-productive to the aim of building continuity.

“He is available to play for us this week but at this point he isn’t available for the quarterfinal, semifinal and final so we’d have to look at it and weigh it up,” said Fleck.

“There are ways a player in his position can be included. For instance if there are too many injuries in one position and you are down to players who don’t boast Super Rugby experience, then you can apply for the player to be cleared. But at this point we are not sure he will be available for us, so we have to weigh up the need to field the best team to win in Bloemfontein with other considerations relating to the play-offs.”

Japanese sabbatical Lambie’s way to go

The Cell C Sharks have confirmed that Patrick Lambie’s season is probably over, but there is a good chance that Kings Park patrons might have to wait a good while longer before seeing the Springbok wearing the black and white again.
The concussion problems that started with Lambie’s collision with Ireland flanker CJ Stander in Cape Town last year have continued following his more recent collision with teammate Rhyno Smith in a Super Rugby derby against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth.

Eyebrows were raised when the Springbok management announced that Lambie had been left out of the Bok squad for the series against France because his condition was “still symptomatic of concussion” and now Sharks CEO Gary Teichmann has confirmed to the Durban media that Lambie will probably sit out the year.

"We are in the hands of the medical experts but it is unlikely that Pat will play for the Sharks again this year. We can only hope that Pat will fully recover after a long break."

It is understood though that there might be another option available to Lambie that he is considering for when he returns from his break - easing himself back into rugby through a sabbatical playing in Japan where the demands are less frenetic (there are stages of the year where teams only play every two weeks), there is less pressure and the rugby is less physical than it is back home in South Africa or in New Zealand.

Lambie is going to play tier 3 in Japan? Yoh, compromises, maybe he will be paid enough. The tier 1 and 2 teams have near all reached their signing limits, three non-residents per club.
