Surge protector red plug clamping voltage 300

Good day, hope here are some electricians that can give me their opinion. Ellies has a red surge protector plug for 1 device. I was wondering if I could use a 3 plug power board and replace the plug at the end to this Ellies plug ?

The red plug is plugged directly into the wall.
Will this then protect the 3 devices plugged into the power board against the surge.

Yes you can, as long as you don't exceed the current limitations.

Have 2 of those set-up's. One feeding an Inverter That powers TV/Media and Lights and on in the bedroom feeding TV Bed lights and fan

Havent had any issues with em so far.

That is it , yes perfect. Thanks. It is a more economical way as the single plugs are much cheaper with a low 300v clamping voltage.

You know they sell them made up with multiplugs as well?

Thanks , yes but for R100 per plug and R100 or cheaper for a 2 or 3 plug board one can protect 3 areas in the house vs 2 areas if you buy 2 premade boards. I am trying to help someone on a very low/ no income. If it was me I would just buy the premade boards like you suggested. The main thing is the clamping voltage should be 300v or less for sensitive equipmemt. The other cheaper surge protector boards is 600-800v and by that time bye bye sensitive equipment.
i really enjoy this forum as there is such a broad range of knowledge. After 18 years in Oz I still enjoy hearing from skilled people from the home land.
 
I use the standard cheap one from Ellies in my lounge, my Mecer2400VA is plugged into that and from there everything else is powered.
Also have 1 in my spare room where my UPS is inside a cupboard
And another in the kitchen for my fridge.

I bought them about 8 years ago

Also have those from back in the ADSL days..... oooh the memories :D

Now used on the extension going to my "network box".

I have begged a friend of mine to please just buy 1 of these cheap things for his office at home.
There are 4 computers in there, 1 for each member of the household.
They are running raw bare back naked into ESKOM.
No surge protection, no UPS nothing

I take my hat off to the PSU that one gets nowadays.

Back in the day these things would fry from the load shedding and spiking etc

Well my Unprotected PSU (Corsair 550W) died just this December cause I moved the UPS to test something....

I know dumb dumb dumb esp when looking at how my power fluctuate on a typical day:

Note to self: Move things back as soon as you done testing... dont leave it for next week.
 
question for you guys,
with one of those surge protectors,

is the warranty one gets from the manufacturers worth anything?
I mean its always in the box it comes in, has anybody actually gotten a claim approved? and paid out?

Well never needed to..... guess thats why I use/swear by them :D
 
You get what you pay for. EG you buy a padlock for R 50 or you buy one for R 200, what padlock will offer better protection?

I would look at Clearline, some of their products have insurance. Choose the right product for the application, if there is paperwork fill it in and send it off as they send it to their insurance company.

You can look at as well DEHNguard, just sit down when you look at the pricing.

Agree but it is about the technical specifications . A cheap surge protector with 300v as clamping voltage vs an expensive 800v clamping voltage I would take my chances with the el-chepo.

If I go by lockpicking lawyer then some of em R200's jobbies are sometimes way worse than the R50 ones ;)

On Subject: For household surge protectors, I never had an issue with Ellies ones. Pretty sure if it was for business I would rather... well I did rather go for DB mounted surge protection.
 
I like to protect my appliances not only with surge protectors but with a combination of surge protector with delay re-connect timer. The re-connect timer has a delay before it reconnects the appliances after a power failure to give the power time to stabilize.

You get different versions like fridge protect, tv protect and others.

My preference is the Clearline and also have it in front of my trolley inverter.

Thanks Stokstert , yes very good idee, never thought of it that way. This person lost 2 psu’s on the same pc and his area does not get loadshed but it will be the surrounding suburbs that will either go off and then the power spike or come back on and the power spike.

Must admit it covers the one item that actually never really thought about and have no protection in my house. All my normal electric equipment sits behind Plain surge protectors or Sonoff POW's & Inverter/UPS's.

Make sense actually...

Will def be getting one for my fridge.
