Yap, same with this Starlet, Have to put my foot down everytime to try extract whatever minuscule power it has, It is tiresome. Turbo for the win.

Your car sh1ts out parts on the highway, is slower than a Baleno or a Mazda 2, and those are 1.5l engines let alone the 2L 4 cylinders from Mazda that will eat you for breakfast.

I've got a 1.8L NA Corolla hatch with a hybrid electric motor. Pretty sure it will beat your 1L

My 17-year-old stock-standard N/A 2.0 will beat the pants off her sewing machine motor every single time - and probably use less fuel in the process!

ETA: And will outlast it too, as a bonus.

I've owned a few VWs. I would rather buy Suzuki than a VW anyday honestly. I know a lot of execs that dumped their BMWs for the Swift or the Baleno and they are happy with it. A few went the 5 door Jimmy route too

Yes I know how you feel after owning a few VWs.

One thing I learnt about VW that Mercedes are better built and cheaper.

So I drive a Mercedes now. Wont ever look back.

Once had a battery drain on my VW, stood at the VW workshop for 3 months, only for them to say they have no idea where it came from. Here is the car back, just plug it in to charge every week or two. And nope it was a Golf 6

I personally drive a very nice premium model car... have always been fortunate to drive great cars, sportscars and SUVs in the premium range, mostly of the German variety... and we bought a Suzuki Swift for the office about a year ago - it has about 12,000km on the clock and most of it was driven by me - it is an exceptionally good car for the money in my humble opinion.

Sure, one needs to expect a bit less given the price range... but amongst its peers, I think it is excellent.

I have been owning VW's since 1980. My wife too, since 1984. We've always had 2 x VWs in our garage at any given time

Our cars last longer than 10 years, and are sold because of desire, rather than necessity. And no-one could ever accuse either of us as typical geriatric drivers to this day - on the contrary ... However, care and maintenance is a given.

One poor experience with a vehicle can put you off any particular brand, but more than one of the same brand? You must be doing something wrong!

I did nothing wrong. Did not build it, did not do the electrical work, did not put substandard piston rings in nor gearbox made from milk chocolate. I deny it all. Only VW knows how to build something one would park in the evening with nothing seemingly wrong, and find it dysfunctional in the morning.

Then again, maybe I am prejudiced as I did not have only VWs. I tend to compare them with the better cars I had and still own. Maybe the difference is my broad experience and that I have been spoilt with cars like Volvo, Mercedes and BMW. Even my Duster, a cheapy from Dacia, is several levels higher up the chain, yet it does not pretend to be a premium car and comes nowhere close to my Merc on any level.
