Video Calls and Seven Years of Telegram

Today marks seven years of Telegram. In 2013, we began as a small app focused on secure messaging and have since grown into a platform with over 400M users. Telegram is now one of the top 10 most-downloaded apps and is used all over the world to stay in touch with family, collaborate with classmates and coordinate coworkers.
We did not reach this milestone on our own – Telegram has never advertised and every user has come to the app because of a recommendation from someone they trust. Strong principles and quality features speak for themselves, and millions of you listened. We've heard you as well, and will continue to develop features that make Telegram much more than just a messaging app. Today we're adding the one you've been asking for – fast and secure video calls.

Video Calls
2020 highlighted the need for face-to-face communication, and our alpha version of video calls is now available on both Android and iOS. You can start a video call from your contact's profile page, and switch video on or off at any time during voice calls. Like all other video content on Telegram, video calls support picture-in-picture mode, allowing you to scroll through chats and multitask while maintaining eye contact.

All video calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. To confirm your connection, compare the four emoji shown on-screen for you and your chat partner – if they match, your call is 100% secured by time-tested encryption also used in Telegram's Secret Chats and Voice Calls. You can find more details on this page.

Our apps for Android and iOS have reproducible builds, so anyone can verify encryption and confirm that their app uses the exact same open source code that we publish with each update.
Video calls will receive more features and improvements in future versions, as we work toward launching group video calls in the coming months. But for this midyear milestone, you can now enjoy a little one-on-one time with those closest to you, whether they're in the other room or on another continent.

Tested it this morning. It was super clear, both audio and picture... android to android and pc to pc...

Is it just me or is this only available via Secret Chat?

Maybe because of the encryption?

On iOS though, haven’t looked at PC/Mac.

No the voice / video call is encrypted using the same encryption as secret chats.

You can start a voice call and switch between voice and video during the call. So if either party has crap connectivity you can switch to voice only.

Aah okay maybe it’s on the voice call menu.

I can only find the video button off secret chat menu.

Will give it a test with my sis. I see the video icon now next to the call button. Cool .... it is about time. Though I dont use it much, I assume a lot of people do.

I dont see the option for video on the PC desktop or web version?
It's just the call icon but when you dial the window that opens has an option to turn on/off video. Did you upgrade your PC version? Version 2.3

I checked in ms store but said it is up to date. I did not know u press call button then it comes up with video option. Will try later.

Tried calling bf last night with video call last night with video call as he is in Cape Town for work this weekend....but would not show his video. Only profile pic. Think his app is not up to date. The voice quality was really bad...so went back to Google Duo. Google Duo is so clear that Telegram really needs to up their game. I don't understand why my calls on Telegram suck compared to Duo as Telegram calls are Peer to Peer as far as I understand while Duo routes through a server I think? So Telegram should be better...but it's not...not by a long shot.

Agree. Google duo is leagues ahead of the rest.

Indeed. I wonder what codec Duo uses compared to Telegram. Maybe that is where the difference comes in. Had to help my mom reset het LTE desktop router last night because none of her devices would connect for last few months. But she is all the way in the west coast...so it was back and forth Telegram texting. If I call she gets frazzled because I loose my patience lol. Eventually she found the little reset hole where you have to press the toothpick into. Anyway...after all done and her devices connected...called her and the quality on Duo was just astounding. I have a feeling of I connect my phone to the big Logitech speakers it will sound as if she is actually in the room.

I think it's their presence on the continent... Local servers.

But then surely Telegram would beat them in quality because Telegram is P2P and does not even go through servers...or do u think Google uses their servers to process the calls codec wise and that is where the quality comes from?
