Telkom 20Mbps ADSL network upgrades starting?

My router says my max attainable rate is ~27000 Kbps and it has been like that for a while (ADSL2+). Before the DSLAM was upgraded max was ~11000 Kbps (G.DMT)

The user's max attainable rate went up because the DSLAM was upgraded to support ADSL2+ instead of G.DMT << this is something that has been happening for a long time now and really has nothing to do with Telkom's current 20/40 Mbps plans.

I have been trying to get Telkom just to get me up to the 10Mbps speed that they promised for a year now still stuck at 4Mbps so wtf knows when this will happen 2045 maybe if we are lucky

We were upgraded to 10Mb about 18 months ago but the line only supports 2.5Mb! Telkom says that "you are paying for 1Mb so anything more is a bonus"! thanks!

Still waitin for my 1 house to get speeds that are stable above 384.... it DROPS at 384.... love to hear that telkom are trying to give people 20mb when they cant even give some ppl 384kb oh well, its telkom for you!

Hold on, Telkom is going to give "some people" 20Mb/s sync, and yet my ADSL line runs at Dial up speeds, even slower some times, sad, can't fix their infrastructure, but wants to implement 20Mb/s already

Well, I guess Honeydew exchange still not part of Telkom SA. We still stuck way below 4Mbps. Cannot get a single upgrade... WTF.

Got the samething here at northriding. Can't even sync at 4meg had to drop to 3meg to stay stable.

Netgear routers generally don't show attainable rates.

You can use the calculator at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php to calculate your attainable rate.

Um sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but attainable rate is calculated by the modem based on the line stats not what the exchange supports.

With good line stats the attainable rate if your are syncing on ADSL2+ will be 20-24Mbps, 24Mbps is the maximum ADSL2+ technology supports.

Telkom will most likely use VDSL for the 20/40Mbps connections like the guys overseas, VDSL supports speeds of up to 52Mbps.

Operators rarely provide services at the top end of the technology as it requires very short local loop lengths(<300m).

Most ADSL2+ modems do not support VDSL so you will need to replace your modem to take advantage of VDSL once Telkom implements it, probably 20 years from now as some of us are still waiting to be moved to ADSL2+.

I was also hoping they are basing their article on some facts and not on the attainable rate. But alas...

This is a case of Telkom running before they can walk. What about finishing the 10Mbit upgrades? People are paying for 10 but are still only getting 4!

Article doesn't say much. Weeks back Telkom did mention certain exchanges are going to be testing 20/40mb feasibility. Until data gets to the point that is really affordable, pointless getting higher speeds. 10mb uncapped is not affordable. Will stick with 4meg uncapped for now. Lots of undersea cables coming to south africa but what we do need is terrestrial infrastructure to accommodate the current surge in broadband demand. If this does not happen, all the other aspects mean nought or we are all sitting with high speed Internet with shaping speeds of 50kbps.
