Telkom 4mb costing BS

This is really a question that i have for all 4mb users.

As you all know Telkom has started to 'upgrade' 4mb users to 10mb, but there is a catch. The hardware that you connect through must support it, this is Telkom's hardware, not you hardware.

In the mean time all 4mb users that do not have supporting hardware will stay on the 4mb line speed AND PAY THE SAME AS THE GUYS ON THE 10MB LINE SPEED. Yes i know they say up to 10mb but we are not given a choice, i mean why not charge the 384 guys 512 speeds, yes you only using 384 Mr customer but you can get 512. Why stop there, why not charge a flat rate and we all get what ever our line can handle. i know i am rumbling but this is p'ing me off.

Another way of looking at it is as follows, you go to a car dealer and want to buy a car, at the same time there is another guy there buying a car. So after looking around both of you are at the counter to pay for your selected cars, you notice that the other guy is paying the same as you, so you say 'I see you are also buying a C180' the response 'Nope, i am getting the C55 AMG'. So you go to the salesman and ask WTF is going on and he says 'Sorry mate you are to old to handle the AMG'

i know i am ranting but i am sure that i am not the only person that feels p'ed off. There are some lucky few that are getting 2.5X what i am and are paying the same as me. All Telkom has to say about this is tough, we will upgrade your hardware some time.

So in the mean time the fastest available broadband is SA is 10mb, Telkom advertise fast, faster and fastest DSL. Where does 4mb fit in cause it is no longer the fastest. i am paying for the fastest DSL but that line speed is not available to me. i remember when i first got DSL they had to test my line and then let me know what speeds it could handle and that would determine what package i went for. Now there is this big gray area which they cover by saying 'Fastest DSL up to 4096/10016kbps' WHAT BS IS THAT.

i was wondering how everyone else who is 4mb and not getting upgrade felt.

is there some who knows how to do a poll, something like, '4mb and not getting upgraded: 1. happy to be paying the same as the guys running 10mb 2. think it is BS to pay for something you can not get.'

i agree with everything dont see me getting 10 meg line for a long time cause of exchange not supporting it :P

Why have Telkom introduced the 10 meg speeds? Especially seeing as they're charging the same as a 4 meg line.

i recently saw on a UK forum BT or Virgin offers upto 20mbps and some people were only getting 1mbps. at the same price point.

Yeah that is true but a friend of mine in the UK approached Virgin and told them that he did not want to pay the same amount as someone with 20 meg when he only has 1 meg so they reduced his changed

They need to keep the customer happy because they want to keep them but Telkom does not care

I mean look at the way they rolling out 10 meg they have no regard for there customers or they would communicate better

Let me get this right, either the opening poster wants:
- Telkom to charge more for the 10MB lines
or
- Telkom to decrease the existing charge for the 1-4MB lines

But, where is the business case for this?

If Telkom drops the price of the existing 4MB line, then people will opt to not-upgrade, making Telkom's drive for the 10MB lines kind of pointless.
If Telkom charges more for the new 10MB lines, then people will opt to not-upgrade, making Telkom's drive for the 10MB lines kind of pointless.

In the end, Telkom are going to win because higher speed = more throughput = more money.

I'd think there would still be people who want that speed and would be willing to pay a little extra for it. Maybe that approach would've resulted in a less congested upgrade that didn't result in such a mess.

In the end, Telkom are going to win

That cannot be disputed ;)

Considering the price of international bandwidth, I really couldn't give a **** about the extra 6Mbps.

Telkom must do one of two things, either half the current price of 4MB or double the price of 10MB....

Wait Telkom does free upgrades as they can and your upset because your not in front of the line? Really?

Yes, people are getting faster speeds while paying the same. Its not fair but such is life & to begrudge others some joy just because you can't have it is childish.

Yes, I think they should cast an upgrade spell on all exchanges simultaneously.

I'd recommend you write a letter of demand and go toi-toi. Its the fashionable thing to do among people of a certain mentality.

just another case of sour-puss 384k user who couldnt afford the 4mb line....
You didn't read the thread or even the OP did you?

I just want at least 2mb speeds on my 4mb line and then I'll be happy.

An extra 6 on top of that will just be a bonus. But yes Stigmata101 I agree with you.

were you fighting for the rights of the 4mbps users who were only able to sync at a lower speed?

So then take Telkom to the Competition Commission. Tell them that certain users are getting preferential treatment.... while paying the same subscription. And it is not just about "what your line can handle" ... because Telkom has preferentially upgraded only certain exchanges.... while ignoring others.

Unless Telkom can guarantee ALL of the 4 mbps users that ALL of their exchanges are going to be upgraded to the same level... then it is not fair on their customers.

There will always be people that want the fastest possible but in this case you either get it or you don't. For me it would be nice to have the 10mb line if you had a good uncapped product to support it. So from a cost point of view you will not really get value out of a 10mb service if you have a 5gb cap, it would then make sense to have a lower 4mb line charge, that way you would get more of the lower speed guys upgrading. i can guarantee that the chops DL'ing 100's GB a month would stay on the 10mb anyway.

I am a 4mb user, always have been, just now that 10mb is around 4mb is no longer the Fastest DSL available.

So True.

Right off the bat i am sure you know what they say about sarcasm... i must say that your mental intellect must have been tested in writing the above and therefore failed to understand what i was trying to get across. Is 4mb the fastest DSL available, NO, that would be 10mb now. I have already spoken with the guys at Telkom and it took quite some time before i got hold of someone that had any knowledge of the 10mb upgrade. So i know more or less what is happening in my area.

The basic idea of this thread was to see if people felt the same regarding the 4mb line and should its price be dropped to fit in between the faster and fastest DSL packages, maybe even drop the 384 and start at 512, 4mb and then 10mb. The idea was not to start people off on a tangent to bring out their creative writing side.
