Telkom ADSL IPC free capacity increase

As if 5% increase is worth mentioning even. They should rather drastically reduce the IPC connect wholesale prices instead.

5% is not really going to make a dent....

5% of a 8 gigabit IPC link is 409.6 megabits.... Not much for a ISP to rejoice about.

I would have imagined a 10 or 15% increase....

well it means Naspers has a lot more capacity - 5% on what is it 23Gb/s probably gets them to over 25Gb/s and then with half the user base. This is also an entirely for the greater good decision rather than part of the Comp Comm settlement or anything else.

What would be a very interesting move - and I am not certain of the position of the Comp Comm etc ... on this - would be for Telkom to provide a 15% increase in capacity on providers agreeing to a 24 month non-reduction of the total value of acquisitions from Telkom (so an ISP gets 15% increase the capacity and will continue to reduce prices as per the agreement etc ... and in exchange agree for 2 years that their total bill to Telkom will not be reduced - the benefit to Telkom is that they can move confidently on the supply side of their wholesale network planning, the advantage to the ISPs is a 15% bonus on capacity - which grows as other reductions kick in, the advantage to SA is that it puts us on path to growing capacity)

any response from the ISPs yet?

I don't expect any of the ISPs to pass on savings but are they going to pass on capacity.

Hopefully consumers will benefit from this, one way or another.
Interesting to see what Mweb will do, with regards to the article earlier today....

Shareholder party, their profits just increased again and they didn't even have to throw away anymore customers.

5% additional capacity PLUS an anticipated 8% IPC price reduction (soon) ...

Very nice!!! I assume ISPs can take the cut as a capacity increase, sure Telkom will try push this to keep cashflow stable. I.e. get a 13% (or whatever the compound figure works out to) plus say 1% extra if you take the bandwidth option, not the pricing option. I can see ISPs jumping on that.

MWEB will continue with their crackdown no doubt, they are just a bit late to that party, most of the other ISPs have already done something similar. MWEB could just have been a lot clearer about how they make the decision...
