I have now spent the last 9 weeks calling Telkom to sort out my line for my ADSL.

I have an intermittent line problem. Every 30min to an hour my ADSL connection dies and then has to re sync.

I have had my line speed pushed from 10 megs to 1 megs but I still get the same issue.

I have told the Telkom ADSL techs that the issue is with the line... Im 2 km from my local exchange... But every week they proceed to send me an SMS to say my fault has been resolved

How are we supposed to deal with a company that does not resolve the actual problem....

It will be good to see if I can lodge a formal complaint with the new consumer protection Ombudsman

Has anybody else been down this route that can add any suggestions:confused:

Yeah i have. I had the same situation as you.

I just cancelled my adsl, i'm willing to pay the mobile data rate's, just as long as i dont have to speak to telscum ever again.

Their service is **** and overpriced.

@Ciruis

I am actually getting to the same point... I spend more time talking to telkom than getting the problem resolved... Its actually a JOKE... But 3g is not the best solution but then again there are no other solutions

well, i delved into the abyss and bought the cell c 5gb promo.

So far so good, i downloaded stuff last night at 10mbs speeds.

I just hope the service stays stable for me.

As for telkom, i cancelled my services with them two weeks ago due to lack of "service" (i.e my line just stayed broken for over a month) and i got a call today asking "am i sure i want to cancell......". To which my reply was " iYesss ".

At the end of the day nothing beats a fixed line service in the long run compared to the alternatives we have in this country at the moment, BUT for me personally i just can't be twatted enough to put up with the BS of trying to get a stable service from our beloved Telscum. I have the money, and i choose to spend it else where.

Its sad but true, I was at a meeting in Kenya last week and apparently the story goes thaqt Telkom are not interested in Fiber optic cable due to lack of interest......... This is rubish..... ppl would love affordable home internet and yes you cant beat fixed line...........

Other countries in Africa are already starting to deploy it.......

I have a Cell C, MTN and Vodacom 3g card... Some times they work some times they dont............

All in all I would pay a higher fee for telkom if they could ensure quality

HAHAHA Telkom stats for u bud LOL....... "destination host is unreachable" :)

And this is supposed to be a 4 meg line... actually its supposed to be a 10 meg line and Im 2 km from the exchange

Sorry there goes my ADSL line again......................... Had to switch back to cell C.....

here are the stats for my adsl line
Speed 2047 kbps 507 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.5 db 19.0 db
Noise Margin 16.20 db 21.5 db

This is on a 2 meg line............................................

The Telkom Techs say this should be more than confortable on a 10meg

stats is good, so only option is to blame telkom :/

Well I was supposed to have my Telkom line installed almost a week ago, with them telling me I have a faulty connection at the exchange, and that its been logged to be repaired... Guess what, im still waiting...

Intermittent line drops - burglar alarm call-home?

I have an intermittent line problem. Every 30min to an hour my ADSL connection dies and then has to re sync.

Look for telephonic devices connected to your line that don't pass through a POTS filter. When these are inactive, they won't affect the line, but if they fiddle, the ADSL may drop signal.

"Every 30 minutes" suggests some sort of automated process; when it's happening, line drops, in between, all is well. Most of the time, it's fine, so when Telkom test the line and it's fine, they tell you it's "resolved".

One possible culprit is a house burglar alarm that periodically "calls home" on the line. The burglar alarm installers may connect to the line in a hidden place as close to the pole as they can, so that it's less likely to be cut by intruders; if done outside a visible wall jack, it may be missed when setting up ADSL and fitting POTS filters between non-ADSL devices and the line.

Other more prosaic culprits include forgotten extension jacks with handsets connected, that may add noise when bumped by pets, etc. Line quality may get worse in rain, e.g. creepers growing into connection boxes etc.

I had my line "fixed" just 5 days ago. For 4 days it was insane. I was getting 11ms ping in Battlefield 4 @ 2Mbit
Today at lunch time I noticed the router had re-synced at only 768kb/sec.

May as well give up.-

Having the EXACT same problem since November. But in my case, after logging 6 or more faults, no telkom technician has ever come to the house. They just send SMSs a day or two later that the fault is restored and we start all over again. Or better yet, like today, they call in the morning that they are coming, we wait the whole day and no one pitches but I get the SMS that it's fixed. HOW??? And to add insult to injury, according to the timing of the SMS they apparently fixed this during loadshedding. Bloody useless ******* And of course there is no alternative. Heck you cannot even reply to any or the message or emails or get through to 10210....hold, hold, hold..cut-off. Rinse and repeat.
