Telkom ADSL speed increase details

The only thing that will remedy telkom's regime is something that costs less than Telkom's current offerings and something that is just as reliable. Pity 3g and similar wireless stuff is more expensive and less reliable.

I think you may possibly be incorrect.
cell c's deal if you can actually get the datasim (none in east london - still waiting for one from cell c rep -4 days and counting) is actually cheaper and i think more reliable.
cell c = R82 for 2gb per month vs telkom on 384= R130+152 line fees plus about R40 for 2 gb = R328 (so on 2gb telkom is about 4x as expensive).
Since i have been using a cell c data sim when hspa arrived in east london I know of once that the network was down for about an hour. My adsl line has on occasion been down for 4 days when I just wanted to convert the account from personal to business.
lastly cell c where i live is at very least 3 times as fast as 384 adsl.
now I just wish I could get more datasims in east london.

The way that I understand it if you got upgraded to 1mb you are safe (on downgrading in the future).

Telkom helpdesk to the rescue

Telkom’s helpdesk was more helpful, and confirmed that Telkom has upgraded a group of 512Kbps ADSL lines to 1Mbps, adding that the upgrades form part of a trial by Telkom.

According to the helpdesk assistant, the lines which were upgraded were selected randomly, and some DSL512 subscribers’ lines may therefore not be upgraded at this stage.

It is further understood that an upgraded line will not be downgraded to 512Kbps in future, and that the upgrades are free of charge.

Telkom’s helpdesk could not confirm whether all DSL512 lines will be upgraded to 1Mbps in future, but indicated that it may well depend on the outcome of the trial.

Of course this is Telkom we are talking about...anything can happen.

So last week Friday at about 15:00 I decided to take a gamble on it and called Telkom to upgrade my existing line to from 384 to 512. The lady at the call center was actually extremely helpful for once and actually knew about the planned upgrades. She indicated that they would process my request to upgrade to 512 and it would take 3-4 working days to complete but I could expect that my line would be increased to 1mb sometime in the future for free.

So I left it, wrote the down the reference number and expected to have to call again this week to follow up on why nothing has happened.

When I got home though I decided to take a chance and check my router, my line had already been upgraded to 1mb and was running perfectly.

Been using it for a week now without a single issue.

Exact same experience I had today...not exactly whoosh!!!, but after being on 384Kbps for years, this feels like lightning :-)

384 -> 1024
512 -> 4096
4096 -> 20480
 
Telkom taking 4mb line customer for a ride, now all of a sudden they upgrading 512kb

Hi all,

I just want to say this, all this upgrading is a load of horse $#!T, seriously... 2010 we will be upgrading the 4mb line to a 10mb line Hooray everybody gets excited wot happened, 2% of the exchanges were up upgraded (Oh wait only the areas where there is no self installation and if your lucky enough to live in a rich suburb or close to a business area- Clareinch 0r Rondebosch)Thanks Telkom, your 10mb line upgrade has been successful***Sarcasm***, then 2011 came and they started this whole we will/ want to upgrade users to a 20mb line, my god when you cant even provide a stable 10mb line how are you gonna provide a 20mb line (and obviously this line will one again only be provided in the rich areas, nevermind that in the more dense suburbs like grassy park, lansdowne, ottery, lotus river, etc... they have alot of customers that are on 4mb lines...) we probably will never even see the 10mb line...

Who ever is running the projects at TELKOM, he/ she needs to be fired coz they start something, just to get hype and get people talking... basically to deter the consumer watchdogs...

TELKOM SUCKS BALLS...


If everyone were to do this i am sure that TELKOM will be forced to listen. (All adsl customers cancel there adsl accounts with telkom for a month, this means no adsl revenue at all for a month, this is a multimillion/ multibillion rand cash cow for Telkom, if we all cancelled they would have to listen to there customers...) Like when people strike for wage increase etc...

Chill brother. 4096 -> 10240 is far less important than 512 -> 1024, and that in turn is less important than 384 -> 1024.

It's no good for anyone if Telkom blows cash on unprofitable upgrades, and I'm pretty sure upgrading every exchange to support 10240 would be a very unprofitable move. Their strategy of upgrading where there's most demand is the only sensible strategy.

That's not to say Telkom's not inefficient or too slow, but they are doing the right thing by shifting focus to upgrading at the lower end.
