Telkom battered and confused

Neotel... I wish writers would write on what they know about.

I guess Neotel does not want our business either :(

I'm amazed. I read reviews and write ups like this and wonder. How can anyone write a review or story on what they read and would like. This guy is with Telkom and has a *** service but hey he has a service.. then he writes about Neotel but does not have Neotel and is still dreaming about Neotel. What a joke. Neotel has NO SERVICE!! There sales pitch is Light years ahead of the service supply and technology. Maybe just Maybe Neotel will be ok in time to come but for now they can have there crap back any day. So having them not call you back be happy as you will be able to keep your hair from going grey a bit longer.... :D

Ok Mr Smarty-Pants, find/develop a radio communicator and receiver for alarm system monitoring that will be compatible for all alarm systems distributed locally supporting more than just basic telemetry and ContactID.

I hate to break it to you sitting on Cloud #9 surfing from your little wireless connection, but wireless technologies aren't as mature and cannt provide the same level of service and fixed line networks.
If fixed lines are so great why do you have a cellphone then? Maybe just make a dash for the nearest tikybox next time you want to make a call ok?

Seriously though, fixed wireless is a good way to go, just not in SA because firstly there is telkom and secondly you get a lot of crap (see point one). Everything from installation issues to slowdowns on the line. All this I sidestepped when I got wireless and I have never dropped below 2mbps (as promised) and my installation was done as promised within less than a week. So I get better service at a lower price all that while I am not being a tweegat jakkals by badmouthing the very company I am a customer at. Bham - put that in your pipe and smoke it.

What a advanced security system that you can even have at your holiday house where there is no telkom or data coverage ? Check out this : http://www.smarteh.si/files/GM2_UserManual.pdf

I have seen one of those Commanders in action. Pretty advanced for a SMS driven solution.

Also, thanks for the smarty-pants comment, you seems to know me pretty well then - I really do know practically everything known to mankind :p

Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.... This is such a pitty...

Telkom had years advantage over everyone else, including GVT protection, monoply, infrastructure, existing client base, "progressive" technologies like ADSL..

AND THEY STILL MANAGED TO **** IT ALL UP!!

Honestly speaking...

1) You're given a company that is wort billions
2) It is one of the most profitable companies in the Country
3) It has the upper hand and advantage in almost all areas of business, strategy & technology
4) It was delivered to you on a Golden Platter post 1994!

And Management still managed to drive it into the ground???

Have I missed something???

PS: Put aside your hate for Telkom for 1 second please. I too hate Telkom as much as the next person, if not more. But look at blatant mis-management of a resource that had such potential, not just to lower costs and provide internet, but to INNOVATE and bring advances and benefits to both ends of the economy both rich and poor

-------------- IF MANAGED CORRECTLY -----------------

This is so sad... Its like SA and GVT are almost promoting bad management.

been battered and confused
for so long its not true
wanted competition
never bargained for you
Lots of people talk
and few of them know,
the soul of telkom

:p:p:p

Very clever - it seems that dominic and I are the only two Led Zep fans on MyBB, as nobody else picked up on this and commented.

I like... :D

I have read all your posts in this thread and a disagree with you entirely. You are coming at this from the angle of what sounds like somebody who only uses the internet for email and occasional browsing. If those are your requirements, then bully for you. Then I can understand how a wireless connection suites your needs, but you can't assume that everybody's needs are the same as yours. The are thousands of high bandwidth consumers out there (me included). People have different needs and applications - some download movies, games, applications. Others use video conferencing, or watching online videos (YouTube and the like), etc. I personally use at least 30GB every month (granted - most of that is local only traffic, but still - it works for me). Don't come and tell me and other people to download less - why should we? That is why I got the internet in the 1st place. Also, don't say that fixed "wired" connections are a thing of the past - what do you think most home users and even businesses use in Europe and the like? The only difference is that there, the providers have advanced the technology and many consumers have optic fibre connection - WITH NO CAP or download limit.

Ok, so Neotel off a wireless service which is going to cost 8c a MB? Cheap? Not at all. As I said - I consume 30GB (at least) each month. 1GB = 1000MB. 1 GB is going to cost me R80. 30GB is then going to cost me R 2 400.00. With this information, now tell me why I must change from Telkom and tell me where there is any competition to Telkom in SA.

um, that's an out of Bundle rate. You can always get it from Vodacom at R2 per MB if you want.

...if you really wanted bandwidth from Neotel you could their uncapped Neotel prime for R999.

Rouxenator, you come across as bit of a bigot - if we aren't the same as you, then we are stupid or backwards or old-fashioned. As Slash69 said, everyone has different requirements and personally, you can pry my copper DSL line from my cold, dead fingers. I've had brilliant service from Telkom and had my line repaired in less than 24 hours. I find the quality of cellular calls appalling in normal waking hours and often give up and call my gf using my landline even though i have free minutes on my cell. Yes, there are issues with the service, but for 99.9% of my life, I never have to even think about Telkom. My service works consistently.

I don't wish to attack you personally, but i really think you need to consider that you sound like a complete tool, rather than the new voice of reason you are trying to be.

Duh. No, I don't want a "Vodacom at R2 per MB". Why would I want something that costs more? That is EXACTLY my point. For my needs, there is still no better option than Telkom. For my telephone at home, ADSL connection, 3GB (International) and 30GB (Local), I pay less than R 500.00 a month. Likewise, why then would I want a Neotel (even if it's uncapped) at R999.00?

Neotel are just another wireless operator - there were loads of them before Neotel came along. How is this competition to Telkom? We need another fixed line operator in this country. Don't get me wrong, I'll spit at Telkom from the depths of hell - I despise them, but there is none other who can offer me what I want.

I have read all your posts in this thread and a disagree with you entirely.
You would because my pure genius is hard to grasp at the best of times, so I understand your conundrum.
You are coming at this from the angle of what sounds like somebody who only uses the internet for email and occasional browsing. If those are your requirements, then bully for you.
I actually downloaded 30gb of porn this month, so no, I am a heavy user at times. Mostly I try to stick below 5gb

Sure, I also do 30gb+ at times but I do it without telkom because I have what they call a backbone and moral values.
Don't come and tell me and other people to download less - why should we?
You don't have to, but it will cost you much much more if you do, besides at the rate you are going you will have nothing to download by the time you reach the tender age of 14 and you are making telkom very very happy and rich.
That is why I got the internet in the 1st place. Also, don't say that fixed "wired" connections are a thing of the past - what do you think most home users and even businesses use in Europe and the like? Yes, thats there and we are here.
Ok, so Neotel off a wireless service which is going to cost 8c a MB? Cheap?
It is 1c cheaper than what I currently pay, plus you don't have to fork out R2000 for the CPE as I did.

I know, that is what I paid this month

You don't have to change, you are obviously a very happy Telkom customer and you should stand up for this company that gives you so much gigabtyes of data and makes you so happy. Perhaps pop down to your local telkom shop or poskantoor and buy a I love Telkom t-shirt? ;)

My whole point is that I am sick and tired of people blasting telkom while sitting on ADSL connection which are delivered to them by telkom. If you are really sick of them and you really hate them, then the least you can do is to use another last mile provider.

Else you might as well just wear a t-shirt saying I love telkom or I am a twee gat jakkals.

Hey, I'll even throw in another one for you gf :D

Your statement above is my whole point. "That's there and we are here" - does that mean it's all ok then? There are far too many South Africans with your attitude - just accept it. That is exactly the type of attitude that allows monopolies like Telkom to exist. It the same attitude that allows new comers into the market (like Neotel) to operate under a "smoke-screen" of being our saviour from companies like Telkom, when in fact, Neotel are no better. They are in fact more expensive. But I guess you'll just accept that and continue to pay R 2 400.00 a month for 30 GB of data usage, as you said before. Oh well - enjoy ruining Telkom by your one-man boycott of them. You still don't win.

Uhm, you are the one with the Telkom account so it seems you are the one that just accepts it ?

No, your attitude is the one that allows Telkom to exist, you are a customer of theirs. I voted against Telkom and state owned monopolies with my feet.
But I guess you'll just accept that and continue to pay R 2 400.00 a month for 30 GB of data usage, as you said before. Oh well - enjoy ruining Telkom by your one-man boycott of them. You still don't win.
At least I am one man that stands up for what he believes in. I am not sitting on a ADSL line saying Telkom sucks. I have done something about the matter, I feel the burn when I pay for data, but at least I am not with Telkom.

For me it will be a breeze going over to Neotel because I am used to paying much more. I also have a lot of stuff I want to download, but switching to telkom is not an option, because I do not like them.

This is binary logic. If you are a Telkom customer then you clearly do not hate them enough so you cannot go about saying how k4k they are. If you want te be believable then cancel your Telkom account and use something else.

I would use a cellphone to make a call, I certainly wouldnt trust it with my household security

Big deal, GSM telemetry communicators have been around for ages. They are less reliable than other wireless telemetry and ContactID communicators.

Would you like to try again Mr Know-It-All?

You asked for security systems that work without fixed lines, I gave you one that I personally have seen in action. It works nicely and its a lot cheaper than getting a telkom line and running it on that.

Unless of course you are a fixed-line/telkom fan - then I completely understand where your are coming from. Hope you wear your I love Telkom t-shirt with pride.

Personally I feel that anyone that gave in and became a telkom customer should not throw stones. You made your choice, and there are a lot of alternatives. Fixed line is over rated and if the costs are too high elsewhere, just download less.

I am proud to say that I have never been and will never be a telkom customer. So what if my data goes over telkom networks in the end, at least I am not a customer.

Pfffft! Ja, so many options back in 2004/5...

Save the money and buy yourself an "I love wireless" t-shirt.

Good idea, and I'll wear it with pride.
At least people won't throw rotten tomatos at me or try to run me over if I wear it as opposed to all you "I love Telkom" folks.

http://www.frogfoot.com/

P.S. they might run me over if they know I am the Rouxeantor but that has got nothing to do with ISPs.
