Telkom battered and confused

Personally I feel that anyone that gave in and became a telkom customer should not throw stones. You made your choice, and there are a lot of alternatives. Fixed line is over rated and if the costs are too high elsewhere, just download less.

I am proud to say that I have never been and will never be a telkom customer. So what if my data goes over telkom networks in the end, at least I am not a customer.

Oh, and after reading all your posts, care to give your CSS or BF2 or other game pings on local servers with your wireless service?

For most companies hosting their own email servers wireless just won't work.

Also, should you need to work remotely on customers sites, wireless falls flat on its face - wired adsl outperforms wireless by a wide margin.

Games ? Sorry man, I passed grade 7 long before you were even born :p
But if you like give me some destinations and I will do a tracert on them.

Still, if your need to play games makes you become a "I love Telkom" t-shirt wearing person then don't come crying if your face is addressed by a rock with a very low ping time.

You asked for security systems that work without fixed lines, I gave you one that I personally have seen in action. It works nicely and its a lot cheaper than getting a telkom line and running it on that.

Unless of course you are a fixed-line/telkom fan - then I completely understand where your are coming from. Hope you wear your I love Telkom t-shirt with pride.

Refer to this post. I (yes personally) have seen (and tested) quite a few systems, communicators and recievers. You are limited to basic telemetry output, hardwired to zones or by serial interface (only with compatible panels). Anything other than basic reporting is in ContactID format which often deviates from the standard causing problems.

I will use what ever means of connectivity which is best for the application, even if it means using Telkoms fixed line network. That hardly makes me a fan.

Spot on indeed, and I fully agree with you. All you need to do is first violate your morals (which can be done at a price) and then get a fixed wireless connection for your place of work. I have seen these pretty ladies standing next to the road doing pretty much the same thing.

A fan ? Perhaps not, but your business is what is keeping them alive... If nothing else haunts you at night then perhaps you should try missing out on sleep over that.

So you are like over 40 years old?

For a long time I used to believe that Telkom service is really poor. That is because every second article or post on MyBB had bad things to say about Telkom. After being very disappointed by Vodacom and MTN's wireless products, I eventually decided to give Telkom a try and it has been a pleasure. Their service is good and connections stable.
Yes, they do take an awlful long time to install the line and they are very very expensive but at least you get what you pay for. I can't say the same about Vodacom, where your connections get dropped every 15 minutes. By the way I live less than two kilometers from Vodaworld so IMO their reception here should be great.
Also, if you look at Vodacom, MTN and Neotel pricing, it's not much better than Telkom's. In some cases it's worse.
And for those who want to use smoke signals for communicating because of principles, let's see how long your business stays afloat.

Uhm, you are the one with the Telkom account so it seems you are the one that just accepts it ?

No, it means that no one else could provide the same service for the same price or cheaper to supply his needs. Not his wants, which would most likely be a Telkom-free wired service.

No, your attitude is the one that allows Telkom to exist, you are a customer of theirs. I voted against Telkom and state owned monopolies with my feet.

Voting with your feet is only worthwhile when you're not stabbing yourself in the foot at the same time.
Not using a service because you hate the company that supplies it, is a good thing, but paying ridiculously more and getting a sub-par service (wireless vs wired) is a personal preference, not moral strength.

At least I am one man that stands up for what he believes in. I am not sitting on a ADSL line saying Telkom sucks. I have done something about the matter, I feel the burn when I pay for data, but at least I am not with Telkom.

You're lucky in the fact you can afford to spend the amount you do to achieve what you want.
Don't forget, others aren't as lucky for a start and they shouldn't have to spend ridiculous amounts of money for a resource that should've been commoditized years ago and made affordable by the people who are in power to supposedly assist and protect the country they were chosen to govern.

For me it will be a breeze going over to Neotel because I am used to paying much more. I also have a lot of stuff I want to download, but switching to telkom is not an option, because I do not like them.

It all depends on what you're prepared to sacrifice.

This is binary logic. If you are a Telkom customer then you clearly do not hate them enough so you cannot go about saying how k4k they are. If you want te be believable then cancel your Telkom account and use something else.

Once again, if you can't afford to move and pay more for a service you can get cheaper elsewhere, albeit from a company you don't wish to do business with, do you honestly have a choice when your business or personal needs require you to use this service?
The answer is no.

Well, there you have it then - you are obviously some spoiled rich-kid, who can afford to "make a stand" and pay fortunes for an alternative to Telkom. Me thinks you are missing the point entirely - there should be no need to fixed line or wireless service providers to charge as much as they do. It's an absolute rip-off (in SA only) and as long as rich-kids like you are prepared to pay these prices (in your one-man crusade to spite Telkom), then the providers of such services will feel it is ok to charge these prices. :D

I feel like I can drive down to Stellenbosch and haunt you in your sleep...

Sigh
Feel free, but I am not listed in the phone book :p as I am not a telkom fan.

So you are like over 40 years old?
I sometimes feel that old yes. Especially when dealing with you ;)

I am quite happy with my ISP and it is cheaper than telkom for the reasons I got it. So I am voting with my feet and also saving money (mostly).

If I do decided to use it for large transfers such as illegally copying music and movies then I do end up paying more. So no, I am not shooting myself in the foot, my ISP fits my needs perfectly and I am not a Telkom customer, which is a bonus. My ISP also does not discriminate against international bandwidth as local and international traffic are treated equally.

Once again, if you can't afford to move and pay more for a service you can get cheaper elsewhere, albeit from a company you don't wish to do business with, do you honestly have a choice when your business or personal needs require you to use this service?

True, this is the same business model the pretty ladies next to the street use.

Who is keeping the prices that high ? Telkom. Am I the only person not using Telkom? No. So what does that give you ? Well firstly this is not a one man crussade, you just label it as such because you have an ADSL line:sick:. Secondly, you are the reason why the costs are so high because you are directly supporting Telkom.

Behold my amazing powers of Teflon.

Is this something like the emperor's new clothes, except we all pretend that there is something like real competition and good service and offerings appearing? I'm sorry, I'll need some heavy drugs to become that delusional.

Who is keeping the prices that high ? Telkom.

No, lack of a free market is keeping the prices ridiculously high. That's government's fault, not Telkom, Telkom just rationally reaps the rewards (part of which no doubt goes to greasing the required palms to protect the status quo).

Tell me if I'm wrong but I recall reading an article some years back in which Telkom dictated to Vodacom that they were not allowed to offer cheaper rates than what they (Telkom) was providing. I think it had something to do with Telkom's investment into Vodacom to get it going in the early days of cellular. If this is so it would answer a lot of questions as to why landline calls are still cheaper than cellphone calls. Cell phone companies are by law not allowed to offer cheaper rates than what Telkom does.

You got a call 'cos your a darn journalist. A big red flashing 'journalist!' flashes on their 30" LCD's. I should start writing but am far too bloody emotional to keep objective! What with all the supposed competition, I'm so cynical by now, I'll reiterate what I've said a 1000x by stating that I'm not holding my breath (even if I could hold it for years I'd still die from a lack of oxygen). It's a vase of 'better the devil you know'... others will offer ADSL / fibre etc but will be inferior in other aspects - or just downright lousy.

You mention 'not a fast as intended'. This is because you are using it during office hours. You shouldn't. Take time off during the day and work in the evenings. Better. You get near to what's claimed. (sarcasm but true).

I did my yearly returns on weekend. My yearly home and office rent was just over 40k (semi-detached in Cape Town - 2 bedrooms). My ADSL and home phone (and no, I don't call much with it - use cell phone more) came to approx. R13k. Basically 32% of the cost of having a roof over my head. People oversees must laugh at us. I'd not have the balls to tell anyone if on holiday, they'd ask me why I was still there. I'd not have an answer.
