Mine has been down since September 2009. Neighbour has been down for over a year now!

No light on the fiber cable's end...

Fibre is stolen as well. The sheathing around the fibre contains kevlar, which is then resold (I've no idea who will buy it!!!?). So while replacing copper with fibre seems like a good idea it is unfortunately not very effective. The only coms cable that I know of that doesn't get stolen easily is Eskoms - they run it above their power lines - quite a hassle to actually survive to steal the comms cable. Mind you, their power cables are also being stolen.

Solution: throw copper thieves in jail, where they belong!

Whether they use the fibre for bulletproof vests or simply sell it is still not known, but that they do steal fibre ... no doubt.

The comments on the MG article is quite entertaining -> someone wants Eskom to replace stolen copper with fibre. Imagine, few thousand Watts on a laser.
 
Actually, there is nothing that can be used from the Fibre Cable in it's Raw state at all. The retards that take these cables are uneducated and believe that it is a copper cable. The Idiots that buy the lot from them are even Thicker.

Maybe Telkom should put up Billboards to explain the Difference. Would not suit them though would it.
 
What I have done in on my own was to get a couple of the neighbors to club in - dug a trench about 1m deep and put a cable under ground - been holding now for 18 odd mounts and no problems yet.

have had my cables stolen for the 8th time this year and i work in a private hospital. Telkom announced that they were not putting in any more cable. Had a fat-ass Poynting antenna put in this afternoon and am now on WCDMA. All good and well except i've now gone from an uncapped 4meg line to a 3gig capped account and the cost is about the same.
 
Well my line has been down since 27th July. Damn cable thieves!! I am now stuck with WCDMA voice. If only Telkoms Do 3G data rates were not so insane!!
 
In our area (Weltevreden Park), along J.G.Strijdom we suffered 7 cable thefts in 2010.
Telkom recently released figures for stolen cable in that year and it rose from R18.5 Million in 2009 up to R22 Million in 2010.

After seeing Telkom advertising rewards of up to R20 000 for phoned in anonymous info and up to R100 000 for successful prosecution and recovery of Telkom property we decided to try and apprehend them ourselves as soon as we detected that the cable had been cut and our internet connection had failed.

We did this on two separate occasions catching 3 individuals in the process.
I laid the charge personally as instructed by SAPS.

We phoned the crime hotline and logged our request, filed all documentation with Telkom and were expecting a substantial reward given that we had done as much as we could on their behalf.

After 9 months of waiting I received a total of R1.342.89 in reward money which is a slap in the face in my opinion, considering we risked our lives as well as intimidation by these thugs.

If this is how Telkom repay loyal customers who risk thier lives to help reduce thefts, then I just dont know.

SO bottom line is: DONT RISK YOUR LIVES FOR NOTHING.
 
I've been living in Eerste River, Cape Town for 23 years and cables were stolen 4 times. For the last 6 years I'm still without ADSL and Telkom ain't changing there minds

Wow! Talk about a thread resurrection! Nearly three years.
However now that it has been done, someone once mentioned that he thinks that copper theft should be punishable by the death penalty as it is an act of anarchy. Thoughts anyone?
 
Get them to install fibre, once the thieves realize it's worthless to sell they may stop stealing it. Else try bitco I think it's called, or any point to point ISP. http://bitco.co.za/

Do you have any affordable last mile solutions other than wireless ones? Like a nice 20Mbps ADSL or 40Mbps VDSL product?
