I've read a few other threads where people have had instances of Telkom calling to say that fibre is being installed in their area and would they like to have a home fibre option installed to their house. I thought I'd tell you all of my experience this morning - and see what everyone thinks.

My colleague was sitting next to me when she received a phone call from Telkom informing that they had upgraded our area and that with the installation of Fibre, she could now have this fantastic offer to have fibre installed to her home. She then asked me to have a chat with the operator to find out more information.

The call centre agent informed me of this and excitedly asked me if I would suggest to my colleague to take up the offer.

I politely told her that this wont be happening for two reasons:
1. I've been in contact with a few of the Telkom Executives regarding the upgrades in our area (We're trying desperately to get more than 4megs here) and its not looking too hopeful at the moment.
2. There is no hope of FTTH happening here at the moment because, we live in the Drakensberg.

So, I have concluded that Telkom are merely calling people to sign up for ADSL packages, in the hope of gaining more customers. Opinions anyone?

Um no.

Telkom doesn't do that. Telkom isn't some Nigerian scam artist.

Why are you so cynical?

Something bad happen to you?

Not entirely cynical - had we lived in a city, it would be very much plausable.

It was all above board and one could hear the lady was in a call centre. She was trying to sell a product that won't be available here for a long time to come.

Something bad happen to me, whats defined as bad :D

While I think she was lying about FTTH she may have been referring to FTTC, even with you living in the Gammadoellas.

It is possible that Telkom have installed an MSAN in your exchange building, which is capable of providing service over copper cable of up to 40Mbps, depending on the distance.

We live about 10 kms from the exchange. Telkom do have a UMC about 500m from us, which allows for ADSL. There aren't upgrades there at the moment. I'm begging/grovelling/pleading/praying/almost-bribing, telkom to do a few upgrades to give us at least 10 meg ADSL, which would allow for more then 512k uploads (This is for a company in the area, not residential)

Interestingly enough, the UMC is serviced by Fibre - to the exchange, but Telkom aren't willing/able to give us more than 4meg ADSL

You should have told the rep to send around a consultant to your house....

Darn, I wish I had've thought of that along the way.

BTW - The call centre lady was very friendly and professional (Makes a change from previous Telkom experience)
