Telkom concludes agreement with MTN

I am also interested in when this will be active and whether it will work on the Fixed Wireless option as well. This will allow me to cancel all my VodaCon contracts. Telkom call rates to cellular is cheaper than VodaCON to VODACON on VodaCON.

Here's some breaking news for you all.

On the 1st of September Telkom plans to start repricing their products so watch this space.

If you complain of the new tariffs then you need not post here.

Telkom will ultimately be the cheapest.

Mobile or Fixed Line.

I can give you more info however i am limited to what i say here.

All i can say is Don't sign any ICT contracts just yet - Data or voice plans - :)

Well done MTN, I suppose. You can't really lose much in this deal.

Having positioned itself as the fourth entrant in an already difficult market, where the third entrant has barely been able to survive, Telkom has little choice but to hang onto the skirts of a bigger player. I guess we'll look back on this as the beginning of the end for Telkom, or at least the day they downgraded from being a real operator to being a service provider reseller of other services. Of course, the whole Telkom Mobile bubble may burst like Telkom Media when the shareholders finally get rid of Reuben, which some of them have wanted to do for some time.

Remind me again, why would I buy an MTN phone from Telkom?

You won't be buying a MTN, or Vodacom, phone from Telkom.

The roaming agreement is to cover the areas currently not serviced by Telkom's own w-cdma network, which they are busy expanding rapidly in order to wean themselves off this roaming agreement.

It is going to be very difficult to survive in the SA mobile market and the only way will be to compete on price and service quality.

If they cannot do that they might as well stop right now!
 
How can Telkom say they can now compete whilst at the same time join the competition? At least Vodacom and MTN didn't really have a reason for price fixing but now Telkom and MTN do.

huh? How do you get to that assumption?

By your definition then CellC and Vodacom are also guilty of price fixing as CellC has a roaming agreement with Vodacom....
 
So what happened to the love shared between Telkom and Vodacom??

Cell C, Vodacom AND MTN, and now Telkom, are obviously all guilty of price fixing. Even if you assume that their high retail prices are the result of market forces, you surely can't believe that their identical mobile interconnection rates are co-incidence. ;)

Telkom's MTR is lower than the rest.

Simple. MTN is going to allow Telkom to piggyback off their infrastructure. So Telkom will steal MTN's customers if their prices are lower. MTN won't want that so their prices will be more or less in line with Telkoms. So they will have to agree on prices to set as MTN wont want Telkom to drop prices too much otherwise this agreement is of no benefit to them.

There really wasn't any love - they were just in it for the moola ;)

As for the news - it's good that another competitor, even if it's Telkom is making strides into the market.

Competition and LLU, that's what we need!

MTN made a year on year loss (profit after tax) with it's South African operations last year. They are also desperate to halt the Vodacom tide. This will give them a new revenue source.

I support any competition in the telecoms market as in the end us consumers will benefit.

Well, I hope MTN will look into their current prices once this is up and running.

That is possible!! But from what I understand, they will throw off the roaming customers first when a cell area gets congested.
