Telkom copper cutoff date

My (fibre) ISP is Buzybuy
I have a VOIP service from VOX
R29 a month fee and calls are 46c per minute. Strangely, overseas calls are cheaper
You can also use a mobile app to connect when you are within range of a wifi connection
I got the VOIP handsets from Scoop

Awaiting my Telkom number to be ported

So what happens if I decide to end my contract with Telkom and go to another ISP? Since they are claiming that they are removing the copper cable and I want to keep that ADSL does that mean that the other ISP won't use the copper cable since they use telkom infrastructure?

My concern as well. My VDSL line is with Afrihost. I have to cancel that first before my Telkom line can be cancelled. When the time comes I want to port my Landline number to a VOIP provider and move to Fibre.

The thing is, once you get the call, you only get a months cancellation notice. On top of that I'd have to give a months notice on my DSL line before I can port my landline number.

So technically I'm going to lose my Landline number before I'm even able to port it, the way things currently are.

My only alternative is to get the ball rolling right now and cancel of my own accord, which is not ideal, because things are working better for me right now than they would on Fibre.

There is only one copper cable infrastructure provider ----- Openserve (Telkom).
IF the copper goes, so does the ADSL service regardless of who your ISP is.

So, If you give in to the blackmail and fall for the BS story, tell Telkom that you need to first cancel/ migrate your ISP service to fibre, before totally giving up the fixed telephone line/migrating that to fibre (VoIP). That is IF you still have and use the fixed-line service.

Telkom will not stop ADSL.
They will probably just decomission areas where the month after that area's last contract customer's contract ends M-M automatically falls along with them.

Incidentally, Telkom pulled this stunt on me about 8 weeks ago. All sorts of dire warnings, service would be lost if I did not move off copper etc. Finally got an offer from them for less than what I was paying to keep my cu service. At this point, I agreed.
But the transition was anything but a pleasant and trouble-free experience.

Vox has a Black Friday special until Monday 2/12/2019 on unlimited VOIP calls to South African numbers for R171.35/month. Overseas calls would be charged in addition to this, but are cheap on VOIP. Your number port to any VOIP provider can take up to 3 weeks. As soon as you applied for the number port, you can apply for the DSL cancellation. After the number port is confirmed, you could cancel your landline service with Telkom without losing the number.

That's good to know, so I can apply for the port shortly before I cancel the service?

What was the offer and please remind us again what you currently have :).

We waiting 2 weeks now for delivery but if i can make changes, would help :p .

10/5 20 GB cap plus VoIP fixed line transfer R 449
New crappy D link router - no manuals available and incredibly poor support.
Old phones simply plug into voice socket.
Terrible power supply for ONT and Router --- NO lightning protection provided --- In the good old days Class II surge and lightning protection were standard.
The installation (overhead) was a joke --- the technician that arrived had virtually NO tools of their own, no decent draw wire, no drum roller to allow easy roll off of fibre cable.
The pigtails were incorrectly installed - did NOT actually take the strain at all. The fibre supported the pigtails.. The dead ends were installed upside down, which meant that very night the OH fibre unhooked in a pretty mild wind.
Untidy fibre loops at the poles and at the dead end on the house.
His fibre stripping tool was such poor quality and as blunt as hell.
Only one Safety helmet between the two of them. and one belt. His ladder was so bent he battled to extend it against the pole.

And Telkom claimed I would have 48 hours to back up my emails ----- yet 40 minutes after agreeing to the "upgrade" my emails on the IMAP server were already history.

edit/: He was also very proud of the fact that he received his installation training in China ......

What a disaster of note. They should not be as swamped with work since the noticeboard is practically almost empty and those of us moving to LTE will make their life easier lol.

What a sad affair that turned out.

Hi Totempole,

As far as I understand, yes. You would have to apply to the VOIP provider you are going to use, to port your Telkom number to them. You must then wait for the number port to be completed and confirmed, which apparently takes up to 3 weeks. Only once it is confirmed, should you give Telkom the one month's notice to cancel your Landline phone service. You can give Telkom less than a month cancellation notice, but then they threaten to charge a penalty fee, which they refuse to specify upfront. I have not done a number port, and am only repeating what Vox told me. I suggest you speak to a couple of Voip providers, Afrihost, and if necessary Telkom, to get their advice about the timline and best sequence for what you need to do..

When you port your landline number to a VOIP provider the Telkom line will be automatically cancelled. I have helped 2 friends of mine port their landline number to Freshphone, and this is definitely what happens. 2 months after porting they got their final invoice from Telkom and their line was cancelled. No need to do anything once the port has gone through, it all gets cancelled automatically.

helkom is a joke the whole of sunnyridge is a joke , have reported no land line for the past week , when i went to telkom office i was told , sorry but telkom dont replace the copper lines anymore , we are porting all clients over to cellular tech , ha i laughed at her and told her she can stick her sim where the sun dont shine. telkom has never been and will never be my isp . another thing that made me blow my fuse is i wasnt gigen any choice in the matter . therefore i cancelled the helkom shitty line.

No one said Telkom MUST be your ISP. If you don't want to make use of their services, there are plenty WISP's and fixed LTE providers. The fact that they stopped repairing/replacing/installing new copper lines is a blessing. They're a failing company, imagine a failing company trying to maintain 3 infrastructures; copper, fibre and mobile. At least now they're only expanding fibre and mobile infrastructures.
