Telkom defends ADSL usage based billing system

What a load of c#$!. Show me another country that charges 1000%-2000% more for 30GB unshaped ADSL? (For that matter show me a country that does such bloody restrictive shaping). This per GB billing system HAS MADE TELKOM the MOST EXPENSIVE ADSL provider IN THE WORLD. If we were 39th of 40th on the UN's list (courtesy of Dr Kelly) before this per GB cr#$ billing was introduced then we're COMFORTABLY last place.

TELKOM screwing the SA public - proudly SOUTH AFRICAN!

Let's hope Alacos can nail these $%#%^#!

Try being a gamer playing BF2 on a 3 gig account , you wont last a full month playing even a few hours each day , you are being limited ONLY by your free time AND by telkom . What happens when you have free time ? You cant play because of your local hard cap , so what is the use of it then ?

Just because you use more than 3 gigs in a month does not make you and ABUSER! Telkom ONLY plays monopoly ! They dont have any idea on the amount of money they could be making both now and in the future by embracing a few important facts ! Steve White please get over yourself , your new policy for gamers and p2p users will still be crap ! What we are all forgetting here is telkom CANT and WONT offer a free local soft cap , why ?

They are not that stupid , well actually they are , why bother with diginet ? 7k a month for a 128k connetion ? OR Datapro's uncapped 1 meg account for almost a 3rd of the price ! If you are in a buisness then it makes no sense to pay 7k a month for 128k , but rather far less for a 1 meg uncapped , more speed for way less! If everyone buisness went to adsl rather than diginet , then the diginet market would go belly up.

Now what about those who work from home ? We have to cover for the loss of income for the diginet that is why IMHO we are still paying a line rental , because each company that goes for diginet means 7k less a month , now think about that if adsl did not have a line rental , why bother with diginet at all ? Adsl is faster and cheaper and for that same reason it is being milked to maintain income . I am not sure of this just a thought but if someone could maybe find out it might open up a few more thoughts on this matter .

For example for the last 2 years how many people/companies had diginet ? How many of them still ? What has the market growth been for digitnet in the last 4 years ? I doubt it will be greater than then 100 000 adsl users , remeber not all adsl users are home users some companies use it aswell , so if telkom lost 10 000 diginet users , who went to adsl that means they lost
7000 0000 a month , how would they regain that money ? Charge the same people 10 000 people R680 a month R6800 000 it is a loss , and i am sure my maths is correct or else my OS calculator is wrong , then also you dont limit the amount of local data , so companies across sa can run on R680 a month rather than 7k a month , excellent for the ex diginet users , not so good for telkom , they lost a cash cow . So how can they get back to making more money , simple limit the amount of local data , and nail the folks again . Lets work on the mweb type adsl , wont take much to get back onto diginet then would it ?

Now what happens if telkom does not have to charge the monthly line rental ? Gone is that income , then the only way they could make money would be to limit the amount of data you can recieve and transfer , so their next "great" step forward would be to drop the line rental even more , but increase the amount they charge for data transfer , yup that happened 1/11 , so now when they say we are dropping prices even more , it is another hoax , cos they have already added more cost for the b/w , lets face it who would pay 7k a month for 128k that 2.4k for 1 meg uncapped ? Diginet though not shapped and i am not sure about the 1 meg uncapped , why pay more for less ? Simple so telkom can get back the money it is loosing because of itself , some sort of irony in that hey . ;)

Once again telkom is its own worst enemy , now if they had any brains they would find a better way to market and sell diginet , but they cant it is old news and not the way of the future , the way of the future is adsl and now telkom needs to get ways into making up for a huge loss , we are all paying for their stupidity .

Various issues were raised by the journalists about the unfair advantage of TelkomInternet over other ISP’s selling ADSL products. Telkom denied these allegations, stating that it will be uncompetitive and against regulation.
Is it just me, or is there any logic in these two sentences?

BTW the technology for delivering movies to home computers is just not here yet. Capping is required till the codecs are fixed up.

Capping is required by who until the codecs are fixed up

Tho, just to prove Im not an ultimate telkom fan, I am told Afrikaans guys listen to the Afrikaans radio from SABC in London, 24/7, over internet. Id like to know if I listen to BBC in SA, would this chow sufficient B width to be called abuse. A 128 KB stream will use 58 mb an hour. 24/7 this means 42 gb a month. I think the port shaping protocols might need adjustment. We will see! BTW is my calculation even remotely correct?

I cant be bothered to find out if youre calculations are correct. But you'll have to wait till they get the codecs for delivering movies to home computers fixed, because capping is required untill then according to your own drivelling and you wont be able to get anywhere close to 42 gb till then.

Seriously though were you drunk when you posted that ?

Beating Cap

At office we are on mweb. At home i am on telkominternet adsl.
On 1 st day of month start massive downloads and continue till im capped. Should be able to do a lot, got 9 gb out of my telkomdsl till I was capped this month, Novemeber. Re-programmed home router from telkominternet to corporate mweb and now doing "non abusive" browsing.
BTW, if I understand the system, all users on telkominternet adsl over 3 gb were capped yesterday cause all 3 gb accounts are capped when the average approaches 3 gb ?
I think Telkominternet needs to re-think or explain better.

ADSL Download

Please note I am currently trying to quit smoking after 15 years. Anything said by me for the next 4-8 weeks (starting 31/10/05) should be ignored as I will rip your head off and defecate down your neck if you get on my nerves.. and everyone gets on my nerves right now

Surf on;)

Well, strength to your resolve. You can use the R500 to R1000+ per month that you save in cigarettes to pay your ADSL account.

A summary of the real issues

  1. The 38% of Telkom that the DoC holds is a huge conflict of interest
  2. The 50% of Vodacom that Telkom holds is also a conflict of interest
  3. The fact that Telkom now has shareholders means that the Directors will concentrate on making a profit for the shareholders at the expense of the customers.
  4. The taxpayer and the customer of the Post Office, and later Telkom, paid for the infrastructure that Telkom calls their own.
  5. Either Telkom must be re-nationalised, or fully privatised and the telecomms market fully opened to competition with a proper regulator.
  6. Poison Ivy needs to be given a new job. I'm thinking of Ambassador to Burkina Faso, for example.
  7. It is time to make cheap bandwidth, cheap phone calls, and cheap Internet accessible to ALL South Africans. This should be a National priority.

I'm not quite sure u have a handle on exactly what video codecs are out there and how much bandwidth they use! The latest fourcc codecs can EASILY compress a 1.5hour movie down to 700mb, thats inclusive of a decent audio stream as well. Thats only 150k/s MAX for real time streaming.....which is pretty damn slow in world wide terms of adsl!

The usage thing might be working...

Guys, my service during November improved drastically, anybody else have a similar experience

Hey don't knock Burkina Faso - where else could you live in a place called Ougadougou???

*Standing ovation* *Applause*... these fckers just don't get it do they?!?!?... Firstly, as a developing country... it would DRAMATICALLY help fellow countrymen and local companies to promote local e-commerce etc by killing the local hardcap and replace it with a soft cap... could grow our infrastructure and technology, promote e-learing etc... but noooo... hardcap my fcking bank account... thanks assholes.

Secondly, the ADSL uptake is so crap 'cause a ****load of people cannot afford their generous price... ADSL is suppose to unleash a whole new rich online experience... but Telkom thinks broadband is dialup with a hardcap?!?!? eish...

Thirdly... Telkom is in line with international standards... oh really??? facinating... what part of 30GB international did they not see? probably the "0", 'cause the missing "0" is added to their bank balance...

Fourthly, Telkom must njoy their bull****... being all funny and big... "politically correct"... "in line with international standards"... sick man, that one company can be so ignorant is beyond me... but it's cool... the clock is ticking.

Mine been the same as before Nov 1. Trust me, there would be no difference in the amount of bandwidth that would be coming down your line. Maybe they have eased up on the shaping or something, but there is loads of bandwidth available in this country, and for that matter - going out.

Telkom is going to let us believe that the services has been improved because of Nov 1. Don't be a fool and believe these lying bastards. How many time have they lied to the South African public in the past three months?

I don't mind a capping system....

BUT PLEASE GIVE US A CAP THAT IS WORTH OUR WHILE, AND STOP SHAPING. I AM PAYING FOR THE GIGS, LET ME USE THEM THE WAY I WANT TO!!!.

Give Your Head a Shake Govt: Kill Telkom Monopoly NOW

I am so totally frustrated with Telkom and its position on almost everything. TELKOM IS KILLING THE GROWTH OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN ECONOMY. Simple. ADSL is more than 10 (yes TEN) times the price of the same products in Europe and North America (when you take into account shaping and capping). International phone calls range between 3 and 8 times the price. It is time that the government took job creation seriously and finally killed Telkom's monopoly so that the country can have the telecommunications services and infrastructure it needs to compete internationally. Telkom hides behind the comparisons to Brazil and other equally-backward telecommunications industries to defend the lunacy/inefficiency/gouging instead of comparing itself to the first world or even third-world countries like India.
South Africa is at least 6 years behind the rest of the world (at least the moderately efficient part of it) in telecommunications services and pricing. That puts the entire country at an enormous disadvantage competitively. Call centers, international services businesses, software development companies, international web business etc. etc. all go elsewhere and those of us in any of these businesses are incapable of competing for international business.
I've heard Mbeki speak about this in the last 4 state of the union addresses and still nothing has happened. Telkom is allowed to operate inefficiently as a private company with a government-mandated monopoly - total lunacy. The company's lack of innovation, poor efficiency, terrible customer service, poor management and ultimately extremely high costs are one of the top 3 reasons (along with exchange control and protectionism) that the South African economy will remain a marginal performer, with slow growth and meager levels of job creation.
ADSL pricing is the tip of a very large iceberg that needs some urgent attention. It's time the politicians took a stand and really did something on this issue. KILL TELKOM's MONOPOLY NOW and let the country grow.
