Telkom fibre prices

After waiting 2 weeks I called Telkom back to find out about my installation, which I was assured would be done within a week. Here is what I was told:

After confirming with 3 different operators previously that the price for the package is R849 for 20meg fibre package including the fixed line rental and data the story suddenly changes. R849 is now the line rental price with no data. If you want data too the price goes up to R1200. If you are willing to agree to a 2 year contract the package price is R999 with a free router as the "launch special".

The final twist that suddenly cropped up, contrary to all I had been told in the past, is that doesn't include the fixed line rental as they currently can't run normal phone calls through the fibre line. That means a separate copper line for our land line which costs an additional R200. Total price about R1200pm if you still want a land line phone or R999pm without one.

This makes no sense to me why Telkom would tell you this and contradicts their own business model in my opinion... Maybe speak to someone else or PM TelkomZA? Sounds very wrong...

Very good idea, I'll do that thanks. Telkom are off to a fairly chaotic start after spending all of that money on infrastructure....

Mine is busy being installed via an ISP who's name I cant mention yet..

I dont get the prices you mentioned because they are much higher than the Telkom Direct Prices
20Mbps R999 pm x 24 (50 gig Soft Cap)
40Mbps R1299 x 24 (100 gig Soft Cap)
100Mbps R1799 x 24 (200 gig Soft Cap)

I have signed an unbundled contract and I buy the data on top
The plus factor is that I am then flexible.
I can down grade from 100Mb/s
I can change packages
I can move ISPs

Install going on right now.

Will post 1st speed test.... Hopefully today or Wednesday

@Biscuit1018

For clarification you're getting up to 100Mbs fibre from an undisclosed ISP, does is ISP utilize Telkom's existing infrastructure or does it have its own?
And what area are you in?

Why is this ISP undisclosed? Would love to see other prices.

Those are the same prices that Telkom quoted last time I phoned, excluding fixed line rental which is an extra charge as apparently they can't route fixed line calls through fibre.

do you need fixed line or is it optional?

Another news flash - new bundles are going to be announced on about the 23rd of December which will include fixed line with fibre. No pricing yet.

I am sure but I am a trial customer on the ISP.
They are not ready to release prices.
So I made a promise not to pre-empt them

I am up and going after a fashion

Speed tests range between
- 86Mb/s-96Mb/s down
- 8.5Mb/s-9.2Mb/s up

Yes Telkom FTTH
Southern Suburbs Cape Town

@Biscuit1018

how exactly did you get into contact with this undisclosed isp?

Sigh. It's asymmetric. Not sure it's worth the fight anymore.

Seems to be the case for home fibre, business fibre is symmetrical at least. I did not have much hope for the home fibre offerings due to business fibre being a huge disappointment already. (Unless 1:1 then it's fine, but 10:1 not good at all, international speeds slower than vdsl, upload and download)
Wonder what contention ratio the home fibre is on.

I guess my last hope is now in LTE. It's symmetrical and amazingly fast if you get a half decent setup. Now if only they could sort out cap prices.

I called them.
They wanted a test customer

I was successful because I pushed on beyond the Call Centre.
Those guys are trained to fob you off.

I politely said that they needed to escalate and get Sales Management to call me.
From there it was easy

I think you are Jumping the gun

MTN are rolling out symmetrical fibre.

Contention is usual in many countries. The UK doesnt give you 1:1 Fibre.
At one time it used to be 50:1.
It has dropped substantially since then and they decrease and increase the contention ration depending on the load on the network.
So in low usage time you will get low contention ratios.

Further it will change with time . Sure there will be contention but eventually there will be competition.
And it will improve

Telkom can launch a symmetrical product quite easily.
They could also launch a static IP product.
Does the market want it? Will the market pay a bit more for it?
I dont know.
