And they don't have a full open access policy - only certain ISPs have signed up with them. The ISP will then tie you into a contract.
No setup fee probably around R2000, there is only 50m of fibre to pull in the existing Telkom pipe, distribution box is just outside my wall.
I am prepared to pay for installation fees and modem. I could also consider signing a 2 years contract for the fibre only, but not the data. I think over the next few months other ISP are going to offer data as well!
Time will tell!

That site says there is no DSL in my area, but I had it for 5 years already.

Just in case anyone was in doubt Telkom have made finding out whats available in your area a confusing mess. Let me demonstrate:
10mb copper only ADSL.
10mb ADSL copper only, yet sitting smack bang in the middle of VDSL.

The light green means you are in line for VDSL in the next 3-6 months.
Unfortunately I think the fibre was a misprint... perhaps???

Partially correct. It means that only certain areas within the exchange area will get FTTH or VDSL. Telkom's exchange area boundaries and the metros' suburb boundaries are not the same thing.
I live like 500m from my exchange. It is literally at the end of my road and from what I've read about the exchange its one of the biggest in the country. I was also told that my exchange was upgraded in October and back in June they were laying fibre along my area (digging up pavements and laying cables etc.)
Anyway whether I take up the fight depends on whether or not fibre is symmetrical and if I'm able to use my Afrihost capped account on it.

The nice lady from Telkom sold me an upgrade to a 10Mb fibre optic line two weeks ago. On Monday I got an SMS telling me my service had been activated and giving my my username: my old username with "reserved_" inserted before it.
Reboot modem, no connection. Tech confirm I must use the new username (although one seemed convinced that there was a problem with that) and try various solutions from their end. Password reset, reboot, 15 seconds of internet connection. Then zilch again. It's Wednesday and nobody at Telkom seems to know why my router synchs (at 5mb however) but they can't get me service.
Not impressed so far...

Uhh, when you got the sms confirming the service, you did actually have Telkom people at your place physically installing it and setting up your router right?
What modem did they provide you?
How does the modem "sync"? I thought that on fibre the bandwidth limiting was done on their side.
I'm also waiting for the installation at my place so please let me know

And there should be no modem. (Only router) Modems are for ADSL. No syncing etc. Did they pull a fibre or Ethernet cable into your house? If not then no, you are still on ADSL unfortunately.
