Telkom fixed line vs MultiChoice DStv

Irrelevant! A lot of people dropped fixed line for 3G or these days LTE. Whistle it's true Telkom's user base is dropping, we have to remember, DSTV has the uge number base due to Top TV being ***. Telkom is fighting a loosing battle with the likes of 3G providers, and even Neotel and WISP's.

Well Telkom's actions "to prioritise shareholder interests" is not surprising when you look at the main shareholder. An institution that uses most of the petrol levy for social grants, because it's got so many social grants it has to pay that it looks for new lines of income anywhere and any way - For votes - The future be damned.

Che-ching! That's the sound on the ANC powerful cashing in while the going is good. Only to retire to their villas along the French Riviera (or Nkandla behind bulletproof windows) when the popo strikes the fan.

The difference is that the government is not interested in operating Telkom as a business, but only raiding it for what it is worth to line their own pockets.

Completely relevant, Telkom failed to invest in future technologies and now we're stuck with fixed line access that's slower than most smartphone's 3G these days.

If you had a choice between a 100Mbps uncapped unshapped fibre for R200/m - R300/m vs 3G/LTE which would you use as a primary connection?

This is an interesting comparison Telkom and DSTV

Different businesses but one managed well and one managed badly

I wonder what would happen if Telkom had gotten its act together and we had cheap uncapped 20 and 40 meg lines to the home if DSTV would still be ripping us R750.00 per month for there service or would they have such a large subscriber base.

I still prefer ADSL to 3G its cheaper and more stable and is ideal for home or small business use. I also find even though 3G advertises such great speed its seldom the case in real life where ADSL usually delivers what it supposed to.

I just hope this new focus on higher speed broadband from telkom actually gets followed through and it not another white elephant. Since I do feel its not to late for them and they can really impact the market with the right amount of focus and even topple multichoice because it will open up new avenues of media besides strapping a multichoice SAT dish to your house

Two different companies and different products... The two cannot be compared.

I would understand if the comparison is between Nokia and Samsung..

Different companies and different products, but an interesting comparison nonetheless.

Telkom's product should be an easy sell, and DSTV should be a tough sell. As expected, service, management and marketing win at the end of the day. :)

The comparison is interesting but a list of differences is required the big one being the extent to which Multichoice was obligated to provide subsidized services or universal access. Multichoice provided a luxury product in a monopolistic environment whereas Telkom has operated a copper network fraught with regulatory interference, managerial stupidity and a basic institutional schizophrenia.

I think this is the point of the whole comparison.

well of course - and hopefully accountability will come from the current management taking the right decisions and seeking recovery. Unfortunately though stupidity begets stupidity and there is plenty to show that Naspers has been able to milk regulatory systems and lobby in a way that gets its way

But geez the okes at telkom are dof, Multichoice really showing them how to run a monopoly and I must add to our detriment.I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I prefer being screwed by a well run monopoly.

I think people also dont realise that when SBC and Telkom Malaysia were running Telkom back in the day they didn't give a crap about the South African consumer. They were exclusively profit driven. After SBC and TM left, management was left to pick up the pieces.

Well actually easy to compare these two companies. One run as a business the other one run by the government. And Im su glad Im not with Telkom anymore! Neotel is working for me!

Telkom need to sell an experience.
Show people the benefit of having a house connected to the internet and a wireless network in your house.
I have ADSL in my house and it changed our lives forever. I think I cannot do without it anymore.
Had 3G before and even at a lower cost, it was bad for my health. Yes, my blood was boiling too much.

To give that experience to customers at a reasonable cost do this:
Drop line price
Get installers to completely install everything, test and give the customer 1 week free uncapped internet and some free voice for the week.
After 1 week, customer signs up with Telkom ISP or his/her own ISP
When installer leaves customer's premises, everything must work and internet must be on.
Do all installation free and provide modem and a cheap phone also for free, in return for a 2 year contract.
Do not pay installer until customer confirms everything works and he/she is happy. Must be confirmed verbally.
Rope them in and you have them for life.
