As a Telkom prepaid customer I could never get my phone to connect to the "free for Telkom customers" WiFi and optaining and entering a pin is just too much hassle if you only having a quick coffee. So now when I became a contract customer and thought it would now be easy but not so. So my question now is: have anyone successfully connected to their free WiFi using EAP sim authentication with a Asus FE170CG?
If so must the Telkom sim be the only sim in the device or can a second sim be present?
Must the Telkom sim be set to data or voice or both?

Is the tablet a dual-SIM device? The TM SIM which qualifies for the free 10GB must be in the device since that is what is used for the EAP-SIM authentication from a network perspective.

You mean switching on Mobile Data? Shouldn't matter

someone should report telkom to the ombudsman for false advertising with their free wifi bonuses that u can never redeem, no matter how much you try.

Mine works fine at the airport and all shopping malls.

It's brilliant!!

Also working fine here for me.
If you on contract you should be able to add an additional device by using the mac address on their self service portal. Well you used to be able to, not sure if it still works like that. Give it a go.

I did it! I first got the Telkom app, registered my number and then placed my Telkom sim in slot 1, disabled the second sim. Went to the "Telkom direct" connection, selected EAP sim and connected ! It took me a while but from here on it should be a breeze.

Today I went to a different mall to have breakfast. When I took out my tab I was already connected to Telkom direct. I did a speed test to check the connection: 8Mbits , not bad for a free connection!

I hit a snag yesterday... New iPad and could not connect as you must first download a iOS configuration file. Sad panda.

I love it that you just get 10GB free wifi data every month, no other service provider in South Africa offers that.

Thank you Telkom Mobile!

Telkom "free" WiFi

Well technically Mweb does if you use the FON Router.

But the Telkom offer is better. Do you get it with their DSL accounts as well?

Makes sense too- if they already have the ADSL infrastructure in place- it reduces the load on their mobile towers. Reduced contention in busy areas too.

Good stuff!

Aah okay bummer.

So you can't have it on your phone and use it with your iPad for instance?

Then Mweb wins, I just use my account details to login.

Some accounts can have a secondary device

Perhaps it is because I run a custom 4.4.4 Android ROM but EAP-SIM authentication is not present. I had to manually go and enter my phone's MAC on the Telkom Mobile Portal. It works great, actually. Sometimes I swap it for my Laptop's MAC and it takes around 5min to replicate.
