Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

2mb/s uncapped
Most likely due to low prioritization I have high latency in games in the evenings. Pretty much un-playable

Eish! What area, you fall under kzn [mostly resolved] or CT [should be close to done]. Without mentioning area, others can't reply and say if they also experiencing the same if closeby :p. Most important part i left out, which games? :/

For the record, gaming doesn't have low prioritization [as mentioned multiple times] :)

Edit: YT is working so awesome :) , kudos to the team.

Port Elizabeth area.
By low priority, I meant my little 2mb/s line speed. 4mb/s and up most likely get higher priority over me during peak hours.
I don't even expect Telkom to do anything about it. They will probably just say, get a gaming package or capped account.

I have a capped Afrihost account which I use to play on in the evenings. I wonder if their uncapped 2mb/s would be so restricted at nights too.

Cool. Both you (no pun intended) and ponder have had positive feedback on YT today. Good to know, and I'm looking forward to testing tonight :)

Your line speed won't (shouldn't) have anything to do with network priority. Do you get the same issue when using your Afrihost account ?

No, The latency is as it should be then, however the Afrihost account is capped. So the Afrihost one is expected to perform perfectly(Referring to gaming latency, nothing else.)

Just disappointing that I can't play online in the evening on my Telkom account. It is fine during the day and early morning, ofc.

No, gaming traffic actually gets priority if it's detected as gaming traffic. Your line speed has nothing to with it and you don't get priority based on the speed of your line.

If you want help then post the games you are playing and the related server ip addresses here so someone can look into it.

:p , will monitor for your response as i know you will feel the same

@PeeKayZ - Am on 2Mbps uncapped and have had no issues wrt gaming prior to the recent issues we had but that is all resolved. I just logged into DCUO and the ping is stable around 212ms whereas the past week it was hovering in the 300-600ms :/. Will test tonight though but from my personal experience, i have had no issues with gaming as i have played at nearly all hours of the day since i don't have a fixed schedule. :)

If the game isn't large and i have it on my steam list, i can test for you [perhaps others too on same linespeed]. As above, linespeed wouldn't affect your gaming and how it is detected as far as prioritization is concerned.

Oh, MickeyD should have enough time to test some gaming........:D since he is in PE.

The game I play mostly is Epic Perfect World.
I notice this latency issue on all games in the EVENING only.

Tonight I will test EPW, GuildWars 2, WoW
local + international speed tests (just for the latency)

I will also test them in the morning and mid day, so I can present some real numbers, but for now i'm confident it isn't just a 1 game issue and not a physical line fault since Afrihost capped account is fine.

At the moment my opinion is that at peak hours, uncapped accounts in my area(at least) suffer.

Speaking of gaming traffic, does anyone know if playing online on a PS3 is detected as gaming traffic. I mostly play FIFA 14 and at times the latency is ok and other times terrible.

@PeeKayZ - Will test EPW but others are paid and i do not have access so will post results when i can. Thanks for the info. Am positive this is an isolated issue and with rangers [and others] we can get this sorted :).

@neoassasin - definitely detected. GTAV has not given me any issues when playing though i have not played in the last 2 months :p. When have you noticed latency being terrible as there was issues recently and CT is/has been worked on so that maybe related.

Sorry for the mini hijack guys, didn't want to create a new thread and since most Telkom users would be here I wanted to ask if PMing ranger is still the best option to reliably find out what speeds my line actually is capable of, since the ADSL checker is almost always down or out of date.

TelkomZA is the go to guy for that sort of thing - Charls team will sort you out.

Telkom has said they consider games as unsuitable internet activity. Having said that, it's improved slightly.
