What's this soft capping business?

I'm trying to decide whether to change from MWEB to this...

Would be worthwhile to include the speed of your package.

Have a 2Meg Telkom unlimited account softcapped at 200 Gig. That sucks
Being told that I "abused" my account by the ***** in their call centre when their conditions clearly state that the account "provides unlimited data usage" is unacceptable.

2Mbps Ti Uncapped

As it stands im still in good stead if the 200gig is anything to go by. Im not fond of nor advocating this soft caps but I have to admit it does allow for a decent browsing, streaming and downloading experience overall, so yeah still working out for me as an end user. Others might not share my sentiments based on their own usage. And im still saving quite a few rands.

Cheers

Just spoke to Telkom, they said they sent a letter to everyone saying they're implementing this capping policy on their uncapped accounts, and if I don't like it I can cancel. Guess I'll see what ASA has to say.

I also told them I never received the supposed letter.

So much for that option then, wtf...

I also told them I never received the supposed letter.

Likewise, the following was sent on the 4th of Jan and seems to be all I've received in this regard:

Dear Customer

Telkom Internet will be upgrading our internet network from 1 February 2013 as we continue our efforts to improve your internet experience. This upgrade will enable us to improve our value proposition to you in the form of product updates designed to enhance the quality of experience. Both residential and business customers will benefit from these improvements.

The following changes will take effect on 1st of February 2013:

The Free local data promotion will be discontinued and replaced by a “soft cap”. This means that upon reaching your internet cap, you will no longer be limited to local data only instead you will now be able to access international sites on a soft cap. That’s right! You will no longer be limited once you have reached your cap. However, your internet speed may be slowed down and shaped for some international activities. In essence, the change will offer all our capped customers a shaped uncapped experience. Most importantly, all data consumed on the soft-cap will not be charged for.

It’s important to note that, after you have reached your cap, day to day activities such as e-mail, banking, and browsing will be given priority whilst lower priority will be given to high usage applications such as file sharing (P2P etc.) and streaming services.

Customers that would like to surf on full speed again have three options available to them:

1. Pre-Paid credit card Top-Up: Purchase additional data onto your internet account using your South African credit card.

2. Post-Paid Billing (formally known as Cap Management): Pay-per-use model where you will be charged per MB for data consumed on your Telkom Invoice. For customers using the cap management feature, Telkom will provide a default “double your chosen data cap limit” and customers will no longer be able to set their own cap. Customers choosing this option can request the soft-cap speed at any-time by visiting the Telkom Internet Usage tracker tool on the web site.

3. You can also upgrade your account to a higher cap by contacting us online, or telephonically via:

o Residential: 10210
o Business: 10217

Please note:

By upgrading, you will not lose your username or password.
On do (consumer) and TBiz (business) capped bundles, prices remain the same, even with this greater value.

Do Uncapped Offers:

Telkom Internet will remove the current daytime speed limitations on its do Uncapped service. It’s important to note that do Uncapped packages data will remain shaped.

Business Uncapped Offers:

I never received that email.

I'm not a heavy user anyhow, but must say that this is dissapointing.

Although, I'm paying close to what I was paying for a 20GB capped package and I have done about 55GB on slow 4meg account., so it is still value for me.

I have downloaded a couple of big games on 2 playstations and big updates for them and lots of gaming and some Supersport streaming.

I don't think I will reach the 300GB - 400GB figures, but will be happy if that is the bench mark for 4GB. Obviously this won't suit many other users.

That said, it is still disappointing that the accounts are handled in this way.

So in Telkom speak "uncapped" means "we will decide when we think you have used enough"

What I cant understand is why penalise the uncapped users vs the capped users. My friends capped soft cap is workign better than my uncapped soft cap

Question, has anyone been softcapped on a "yournamehere@telkomsa.net" account or is it limited to old "online*****@****telkomsa.net" accounts which have been converted from capped to uncapped?

Thought I would post this on this Forum as well

Ok phoned Telkom today

This is the buzz - you will be soft capped at 50 Gb on a 1Mb/s line
100Gb on a 2m/b line

these are for uncapped accounts

i have been soft capped with "yournamehere@telkomsa.net"..
This is BS.. why sell an uncapped product and then cap it. I rather then pay for a capped product with a smaller capping and have the same benefits as uncapped/soft capped. .. Makes no sense. !!
