I wonder whether this has anything to do with slow responses?

Where did you find that fault? Would be nice a someone just said "Amsterdam link to Durban is having problems between Djibouti and Suez. Expect slow speeds to all customers. Expected repair date 04/02"
or something like that...

Could not agree more. By telling us that nothing is wrong and or not admitting to some or other problem they create an expectation i.e. that your line should work as you expect it to.

If they will just be upfront and tell a person 'hey, look your line is stuffed because xyz and we cannot see it improving for next three days etc......' then I know. I can then stop beating my head on the keyboard and go play some golf for the rest of the week.

Taking 5 hours to download the latest PS4 update of 336MB. Seriously, WHAT IS GOING ON, TELKOM?!

Got the Afrihost 1GB free account and did another speedtest...

Last Result:
Download Speed: 180 kbps (22.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 68 kbps (8.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Essentially the same result. Browser still so to say useless as it takes ages to get pages open.

So seems problem is in the exchange, as I thought. But wait, can it be.... Telkom then said there is no problems, must be my router then..... *load on even more sarcasm*

Ranger and the other Telkom guys, I know you are trying your best but this ship is going down. The CEO should change Telkom's name to Concordia because down its going to go. Pathetic.

Damn! That exchange is farked!

Not according to Telkom. But guess that is what you get if you upgrade every man and his dog and do nothing on your exchanges. Best of all is that my mom is still paying for a 10Mbps package. Talk about getting value for her money.

Telkom... my mom is 78 and she recons your internet is way to sloooow. Need I say more...

Silly question but has Telkom been on site, checked local wiring and tested with another router/techs PC?

Been here three times last year, iirc Oct, Nov x 2. Nothing wrong with wiring.

Edit: Last time guy had his laptop and router which he used. Assured me nothing was wrong. Asked for ports to be reset etc.. and things went fine again.

Did they see and reproduce the issue?

I think you need to PM TelkomZA with your phone and case numbers.

Ah, just saw your edit. There's obviously something wrong and port reset just masks the issue. See if TelkomZA can tell you exactly what's going wrong.

No, when they come here everything is working as it should.

Reported another fault, will see how that goes but I think its time for the line to go. Enough is enough.

Seconded, point TelkomZA at your recent posts in this thread. Hopefully Charl will get involved - that guy can work wonders.

Round about this time of day my latency when using TI rises and throughput suffers. It gets progressively worse too. When I switch to the Afrihost account my latency returns to the normal 10/12ms and throughput is just fine.

The exchange was upgraded mid December and performance on Afrihost is as it should be so it cannot be exchange related.

Telkom need capacity.

Does it happen at certain times of the day? Do they test with their own equipment or is it occasionally fine on your mom's PC too?

I really advise PMing TelkomZA. At least you know then that there's someone in your corner that has a good understanding of what's going on. I know there's "channels" and I'm not a big fan of going over people's heads either, but you're clearly at the end of your tether. The time has come to escalate things.

Up to you though so if walking away will give you peace of mind, do so.

Let me just put this into perspective. The line has been fine for most of last year. Been periods where it was totally useless, about 2 months of last year, but other than that ran like a charm, even though at only a max of 3.2Mbps. There are periods during the day where the service will dip quite drastically almost the same as what I guess Eskom experience and one can clearly see that around 17:30 to 21:00 after which things sort of return to normal.

Telkom people has been here in the past to test on previous faults and lines are fine. House is only about 1km from the exchange and lines are relatively new so network is not the problem and according to techie's will easily handle 10Mbps one day when the exchange can.

Since the start of December however things have been degrading, slowly but surely. This past month [January] was not that bad but easily the month during which there were the most problems in regards to things just not working i.e. time out errors, downloads stopping etc...

The past three days has however been a complete f-up and Telkom keeps on telling me everything is 100% and my faults just gets cleared.

So its not that there is no service and or a service that never works. Its like a car that's starting to spend more time at the garage than at home and as my dad used to say, that's the time where you either give it away or set it alight. Telkom is just becoming such a **** ache lately that its just much easier to just move on. I have already dropped my own ADSL line in December, mostly because I moved but I promised myself that I will never have another Telkom product on my premises, that's how gatvol I was.

At this stage I'm getting that same feeling and will rather just set things up to get my mom over onto mobile which at least seem to work most of the time. I'm just tired of making that dreaded call where I know I will be told everything is fine and or the one where it starts out with 'Please turn your router off...'

So in short....

Already made up my mind so not really asking for help as not even Telkom can provide that. Just reporting here how abysmal their service is.

Sounds like your exchange gets congested at certain times, but

Telkom is just becoming such a **** ache lately that its just much easier to just move on.

this is probably the right decision. Thanks for sharing, and hope you have better luck!
