Telkom Internet Uncapped User Feedback.

That is what I was wondering as well and if you take in account that it was a terrible month for TI customers and I have to assume that the more intensive bandwidth users did not manage to download as much they maybe wanted, why the need for extra bandwidth or did they grew their customer base by a huge amount?

There have been previous mentions of not enough bandwidth for Cape Town if I recall correctly?

I'm hoping that someone will tell me"Hey stupid, that is not how things work."
I can comment.... Im not sure why, but ever since the beginning of all this complaints, i have not once had any issues, im in the West of JHB, and connected to the Helderkruin exchange, and i honestly had no issues, the last time i had major throttling issues was in May, but that was sorted shortly after my complaints (thanks again Ranger (for the assistance) & MickeyD for the config on my torrent client and DNS)... And ever since then my P2P has been flying! my HTTP downloads have been flying! everything has been just hankie dory! With the exception of 1 Sunday 2 weeks ago when my browsing was extremely slow, but its been again after that.... All in all, im quite happy with TI, moved from MWEB, and except for my brief RANT in may, i never looked back, (especially after a friend of mine showed me the lovely mail he got from MWEB about "Fair usage" and abusing the network etc. LMAO! i would've gotten that mail monthly!)

PS. Im busy downloading "The Sopranos" entire series, at 32 Gigs in size, not a very well seeded torrent, but im getting max speeds literally throughout the day, and with on & off downloading and downloading other stuff and putting the Sopranos on hold, all in all its going to take a total of 3 days to complete.

I am sick - so home today.

Streaming fine at the moment, but I've reported in the past that things improve on a Thursday and die on a Sunday, so we'll have to see. Don't have much hope.

So does this mean there isn't enough bandwidth going around and you will have to manually allocate reserve bandwidth every time you see things start to fall over? I don't mean it in a rude way, I rather am trying to determine what the state is of TI at the moment.

So, over the weekend we implemented a different traffic management model. This is more or less what we wanted from the beginning, but due to various reasons it wasn't possible to have it in February. So, these changes were the kinds of things that we would have wanted to do in the first few days while migrating customers onto the network. Unfortunately, you can't do these changes in a non-production environment, as it is quite challenging to simulate the behaviour of hundreds of thousands of users.

We don't expect that we will be making changes like this regularly, we probably made about 3 or 4 changes like this in the past 4 months.

Changing the traffic management model will always result in some tweaking being required, to achieve the desired experience and cost targets.

Thanks for the informative response. Is it safe to assume, that all is well now and we can expect a generally good/stable service now? Or is there still some traffic model tweaks to come in the weeks/months to come?

:)

Well, we are monitoring the experience, and if the experience stays the way it is, we don't make any changes before the weekend. We have on or two cleanup tasks to do this weekend (but there should be no impact). If we determine that there are any small changes required, they will be done in the same change window over the weekend.

We are hoping that that will be the last change, and from 1 July everything is more or less final (except if there are product changes, changes due to subscbriber numbers etc.).

The additional links for Gauteng (not required per-se, but we would like a bit more redundancy than we have now) need to be brought up, and this seems like it will slip into July, but shouldn't be too big an impact (possibly 5-10 minutes during a maintenance window).

Whatever you guys have done, it's all good here so far (in Durban). Streaming brilliantly, http dl's are flying as well :)

10210 - only option, not even ranger can help you on this one.

How is it holding up? Tests for Gauteng look good, and the numbers for the Cape Town site are looking better than Gauteng.

Hope you get better soon.

10210 ->Option 1 -> Select Assistance for broadband (option 3 I think) -> You'll get the option to Cancel or Downgrade and be put through an operator.

I did it about an hour ago, not to cancel though.

Latency on league of legends euw is still 700+ ,3 days now and counting.I guess it is just too much to ask of telkom to provide what we pay for..

Tech is wrong. We sensitized the call centre to these changes in January, but they restructured in the 2nd week of Jan with no up-front notice, so we may have been speaking to the wrong people ...

We need to verify on our side, and potentially log a request to SAIX if it is routing-related, or ADSL if it is a general ADSL problem.

Please provide detail here so long (which game, which server, your latency numbers, traceroute to the server).

If the traceroute indicates a problem, send email to support at telkomsa dot net, PM me the ticket number you received by auto-reply (or email address you sent from if you didn't get an auto-reply for some reason).

You will see a few complaints about DOTA from users in Cape Town a few posts back. We are investigating this now.

Thanks. :)

Game is Diablo 3.

Server is in the EU, IP address: 213.155.155.233

In-game latency has been in the 600ms+ bracket for the past week or three (prior to that, consistently sub 250ms).

After last night's completely broken internet, it seems to now be around 300ms (which is unplayable).

I've resent the e-mail, as I have still not received anything from the one I sent yesterday...

*rant, rant, rave, rave, etc*

*sigh*

It's been ok. Some disconnects or drops. But stable like it was on weekends.... I just hope it holds.

This was the case yesterday, see my other post. Should be fixed today.

Ranger

Thank you for the reply but this was not a one day event and i wont complain if it was this has been going on for weeks and i am too afraid to call the "call centre" becuase i know the answer is going to be "lets put you back on 4Mb/s"

I know my line is stable on 10 Mb/s cuz when i change ISP everything works great and its even that i download alot anymore

my series, steam etc. are all updated so now i just play Guild Wars 2 and watch youtube but i am getting such high ping i cant use my uncapped agter 6 PM

Please if you can check maybe i am in low priority pool or something, i will PM you my details

Thank alot for the reply.

I'm looking at switching to 10mbps Telkom uncapped from 4mbps premium mweb uncapped, but a friend of mine near me has 1mbps uncapped and can't do anything. His internet dies all the time, he gets ridiculous latency, and Skype calls lag. Any point in changing?

I'd hold off it if I was you. I've always been an advocate of Telkoms offerings but I've just about had enough. Been on dO Broadband Premium + 10 meg since its exception in February and I'm about to pull the plug. I'm afraid that all the shenanigans within Telkom is most certainly why we have such bad service. They trying to save their own arsess while "trying" to deliver a "service" that never works. To little to late I'm afraid.
