Telkom Internet Uncapped User Feedback.

although my torrents definitely aren't managing full speeds 24/7 anymore for the past 2 days, my 2MBPS connection here in durbs is still behaving itself for all the rest...

only thing I'm doing different to any of you is using the VOX/Datapro cached Nameservers (found using DNSBench, google it) cuz Telkom has gone wonky with DNS too often since August last year for me to rely on their DNS routing anymore. Even if DNS routing is showing no issues it might be worth a shot to try (as well as running DNSBench to find other potentially fast and reliable servers).
196.41.0.10
196.41.0.11

Another one I've had a fair amount of success with is the Level3 DNS from here
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/a/free-public-dns-servers.htm
granted that's for America so it was a bit slower than local, but it was dozens of times more reliable than Telkom was for the latter half of last year and for a while the only way I could get imgur and facebook and youtube to even load as well as a bunch of other sites.

Spoke to Telkom call centre today-

I complained about the miserable performance of the P2P (in general for the last 6 weeks) and browsing speeds - The call centre agent said that it is probably due to the fact that I used 150Gb in June..........:wtf:.......(It's July)

I said - "so tell me about the fair usage policy that Telkom has that I have yet to hear about" - she said "someone from another department would have to tell me what it is.":D

I asked - "Why is Telkom ISP speeds poor" - she said "if everyone is busy on the internet at the same time, the speed is slow for everyone no matter what ISP you use"

I said - "But other ISP's are running fine" - she said "it sounds like you need an unshaped account but she'll log a fault"

So we'll wait to see what 'appens.......

What I want to know is why it went from "working well" to "now it sucks", and not gradually, but like the flick of a switch with no info, announcement or notification from the ISP? The call centre will not, or cannot comment on the actual status of the performance of the service provided (as indicated in the dialogue above).

@ranger - you rock! This forum is the only place I've found that someone behind the scenes has actually given me a bit of hope with the feedback on network status, it is much appreciated. Do you think that these Telkom uncapped accounts will get back to their former glory?

Cannot do anything with this account. Youtube = dead, Torrents = dead http downloads= forget about it - they just time out.

Speeds fluctuate from 0 - 1 - 43 - 450 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 450 - 4 - 1 .... and so it goes on like it has for the past 3-4 weeks now.

This account is belly-up! Afrihost free 1gb going strong! WebAfrica free account = Ok, Axxess free account also strong. Using Telkom Internet is like pulling teeth... without painkillers... at your own expense. Sounds like sadomasachism to me!

dood muerto ميت νεκρός мертвий morte 死んだ halott 死 მკვდარი мёртвы kuollut ... at least google translate works. That should keep me entertained while Telkom 'fix things'

out of all the postings tonight, subxero you win the prize,...I usually just chuckle at the frustrations, as I know, how it feels...but your posting , top notch man! had a good lol!!

I still have bad latency in LOL,im starting to think i will never be able to play online again as long as i stay with telkom!

Still 600ms + in games so problems with the account still

Ping Tests, Tracerts and speedtests are fine so can only presume they shaping gaming protocols or theres something broken

Also having issues last 2 days though...will make a phone call tomorrow probably and see I guess..For the most part though internet works which I guess is odd.

A little bit higher international latency than usual in that speed test.

Guys, I'm flying over here. No complaints after that link came up at 12:00 yesterday.

Kirkwood 4Mbps:

At this stage in the morning my account is running pretty good.

Browsing is good, Twitter, dropbox, etc seem to run good. Facebook is responsive, but I gives me a spinning circle if I want to access content older than 3 hours. I do not have the same problem with Twitter, so I think it might be a FaceBook issue. My wife does data capturing and uploads to a website and I haven't heard complaints from her side.

Did fire up a few torrents and although not very fast, it is running and that is acceptable for me during office hours. I rarely use torrents during the day.

I haven't tested http downloads yet, but must download a set of laptop drivers soon, so i will be able to test.

Edit:
Speedtests show that I'm not getting great up or download speeds, but it may be due to other factors. Will retest a bit later.
105.225.xxx.xxx range.

International ping to NewMaiden over 400ms on pingtest.net
Local okay, but Grade B line with lots of Jitter and Grade D line to international with lots of Jitter.
This is way below my normal quality. Not sure where the problem is.

Speedtests show expected speeds again. Think it was my daughter that busy on internet that influenced speedtests.
Http download from Proline for laptop drivers gave 300KB/s - 420KB/s, so all good there.

Another ping tests to UK indicates 550ms latency

Not sure why there is such a huge difference between our tests then Mick.
I'm on 105.225.xxx.xxx range?

Some dodgy pingtest latency:
