Speed test two (5 minutes later):

Guess I can live with it, as I rarely get major issues like this.

TI uncapped 4mb - Torrenting at a steady 420 kB/s, and have been all day. I've just moved yesterday from Mweb 2 meg uncapped premium. Maybe it's me causing all your problems...

LoL @ Grouter. You are fast moving to the top 3% down loader of TI as well?

Did a speed test and it is just as rubbish as some of the other tests mentioned.

I assume if everything comes right at 22:00 as predicted by someone, I reckon the Telkom guys are working shifts till 22:00.
I don't think the throttling will last, but what does worry me, is what are those keyboard ninjas up to?
:D

I'm not that big on networking, but would pings increase when throttled? I doubt it.
I think there are reconfigurations being done, but don't think we are being throttled. Haven't done any speed tests though.

I remember reading somewhere (maybe on this forum even) that a good way to test if you are being throttled is to do a speedtest and see if the results are poor, ie. way below average pings and speeds. That would (supposedly) imply throttling is in effect. If you're being shaped, speedtest results would be normal, but downloads, streaming etc. would be lousy. As it stands, streaming, browsing and P2P (shockingly) is 100% perfect, but speedtests are gone for a ball of $h!t and http downloads are averaging between 5-30kbps on my 2MB line. Look at the screen shot. The first is a YouTube link I'm downloading in Jdownloader, and the second is an http dl.

Dude everyone has confirmed that Telkom throttles high end users after a certain threshold.

This means your line speed gets slowed permanently till month end with no shaping on protocols.

What that threshold is no one knows so stop asking just read the previous posts to get ballpark figure.

All those MWEB guys coming to T1 are in for a good surprise around mid month and also the 30 day notice period for cancellation they agreed too.

BTW no shaping on Telkom. Only Newsserver slows down during busniess hours.

I've done just over 17GB since so far this month. That cannot seriously be considered abuse. No P2P at all. That's just streaming, uploads, and http downloads.

This isn't the problem I'm experiencing. Throttling kicks in at 6pm, and ends at 10pm. 2 days in a row now. A week ago, I got an email from a friend saying that's exactly what Telkom had told him. At the time, I didn't have that problem. This started yesterday, and continued today.

READ THE REST OF THE POSTS

P2P traffic is flying, so is YouTube streaming and web browsing. Speeds and pings are pathetic between 6 & 10 pm, and then 100% perfect AFTER 10pm, 2 days in a row. Coincidence ? I think not. TI has implemented throttling during these times. All I'd like is for ranger or TelkomZA to confirm this.

My previous comment, in case you missed it ...

I'm way of the mark for what constitutes "abuse".

and VPN back to my office...

See, that's the thing. P2P, streaming and web browsing seems to be perfect all the time. Between 6pm and 10pm, pings, http dl's and uploads get shot to hell. I've tested this theory today and it pans out. Lets see if the same happens tomorrow. I suspect it will, but again, it would be nice to hear from someone official about this.

It should really be the other way round, where P2P isn't given priority at those times. I get home from work around then, and that's the times I actually need to do stuff.

Can you clarify the sentence above? What 'speeds and pings are pathetic'? Is this only online gaming (if it is not web browsing and streaming)? If so, which games? Which servers? Can you provide a traceroute to the server?

We throttle as follows:
1)If you are not a 'power user' according to the TI tracker, we throttle you to your account's speed. E.g. if you have a 4Mbps line and a 2Mbps account, you will get 2.00Mbps, whereas on a 2Mbps line, you will get 1.76Mbps.
2)If you are a power user, we throttle you to a lower speed
3)Users on 'soft-cap' accounts who have exceeded their quota are also throttled to a lower speed

On shaped accounts, P2P has the lowest priority but some guaranteed bandwidth (so it shouldn't ever die totally), while critical protocols (e.g. DNS) have highest priority. Gaming should have higher priority than P2P ...

So, I think you should test for DSLAM congestion between 6pm and 10pm.

If you log an ISP ticket (email [email protected] or log one online and PM me the ticket number you should get back by email), I will ensure someone provides you instructions for a simple DSLAM congestion test. If it shows it is not DSLAM congestion, we will need to investigate further.
