Hi Guys,

New to the forum and ADSL for that matter. Activated our 2MB account with Telkom last night but speed test revealed it only to run just above 1MB. Why is this? Our lines have 10mb capability.

Got a healthy speed increase sometime in the past week... from 3.85 down and 0.4 up to about 7 down and 0.85 up

If local ISPs were clever they they would up their own news server storage space & retention days to like 1200 days as this would alleviate a schite load traffic on their international links.

Just checked my download logs.

  • Roughly 80% of my downloads - mainly current TV series - are filled by the WebAfrica news server, the balance being sorted by AstraWeb (I purchased 1TB for $50).
  • To make sure that I don't fall foul of WA's "star rating" I download between midnight and 6 am, when my speed averages around 970 KB/s.
Other problem with nzb's are the take down notices that can be a pain. I like both torrents & usenet but after the demise of nzbmatrix I've been using mostly torrents. I can't for the life of me understand why someone has not started up nzbmatrix again, surely they could just share the code with the world and you'll have a hundred clones popping up.

nzbmatrix begat newzbin & newzbin2, both of which only lasted for a few months before being closed down. I have come across rumours of a "nzbmatrix2" but nothing concrete - probably more hope than substance.

Please pm me your username so I can check your account. It sounds like you may be on a 1Mbps account (even if someone at the call centre says otherwise).

Ranger, Ranger! Welcome back! Please could you check if my account is provisioned properly etc, I have not had a good experience since joining beginning of this month.
The net is barely usable between 6pm and 12 on Monday - Thursday, and even this morning I was updating something on psn at 9am and a 150mb update timed out twice half way through. Often pages don't download completely too, and the only thing that seems to work properly outside of 0h00 and 06h00 is streaming YouTube.

I'm currently on Afrihost 10Mb but when I was on Telkom 2Mbps uncapped it was good very reasonable shaping even after downloading 100GB half way into the month they still didn't slow me down more than 100Kbps-200Kbps

Shaping?
This is not my experience.

It's Level3, a big american ISP. And using that DNS is sort of equivalent to using one from Google, but with a lower error rate I've personally found (and it typically comes up slightly faster in DNSbench although somtimes slightly slower as well but faster more often than not). When I'm talking error rate I'm talking specifically reliability of providing uncached results.
(The other one is a local (Africa) VOX/Datapro one)
Somehow the pipeline is often busted to SA (affecting MWeb, MTN, Vox and not just Telkom) so I like using an international DNS as my secondary rather than for instance using both of VOX's. Might be a bit slower, but I prefer reliability and sticking with it rather than timing out 10 seconds later because the assets haven't been cached on the DNS yet.

And I may be talking baloney here...but it's what I personally read from my experiences and from what I understand of DNSs. EVERY time I switch back to Telkom's auto assignment or whichever two from Telkom/SAIX come up fastest in DNSBench I get things timing out and assets and entire websites refusing to load. Also have had similar issues using OpenWeb or Google's (far less frequent though) and very rarely when using both of VOX's (when all 196.'s seem to be toast) and this is the combination I've found to seemingly work best for me, so far at least.

it might not help torrent speeds, but it should help overall stability and prevent timeouts
